How to Jailbreak Your PS3 on Firmware 4.91 or Lower with PS3 Toolset!

If you have a compatible PlayStation 3 on firmware 4.91 or lower, you can easily jailbreak your PS3 using only software! No hardware flashers, no need to take apart the console, not even a need to downgrade! Thanks to the team over at PS3Xploit, anyone with a compatible PS3 can patch their console and install Custom Firmware (CFW).
If you have a CFW capable PS3 the first thing you should do is backup your console's NAND or NOR flash to a FAT32 formatted flash drive. This should be done on every install, just in case your system needs the flash restored at any point in the process. After verifying your flash dump is proper, you can download the required patch for your console and install it all directly within the browser! This process will download a specific file to your console and "patch" the console so it's ready for CFW. After verifying your PS3 has been patched successfully, you can simply reboot your console, take a 4.91 CFW of your choice, and install it directly through the XMB!
In order to do all of this you MUST have a compatible PS3. All Fat/Phat models work! If you want to perform this on a Slim console, 20XX and 21XX models are all compatible. 25XX models that have a 3.56 or lower minimum firmware version will work, anything showing a higher minimum firmware will not. ANY PS3 MODEL HIGHER THAN 25XX WILL NOT WORK! This includes newer Slim (30XX) models and all Super Slim models.
Although this tutorial was recorded on firmware 4.91, the jailbreak process with PS3 Toolset is the same on higher firmwares as long as all of the software needed has been updated. The only differences would be a firmware specific patch, which PS3 Toolset will download for you, and a different CFW matching your firmware version. If you see the video title and description shows a higher firmware number than what is shown in the video, that means PS3 Toolset has been updated for that specific firmware version.

Thanks for this one! I have two PS3’s jailbroken on 4.90 still. One is an CECH-L04 and the other is a CECH-G04 (still running with it’s 90nm RSX!) But i think i’ll stay on 4.90 ;)
Edit: maybe If the CECH-G04 dies and i'll get a BGA station i'll make a frankie out of it;) but i don't know. I would rather do a CECH-Cxx frankie (I'm in Europe)

Hello mr mario, I was following the video and it was doing all good until when I got into the browser and went for the ps3 toolset it gave me a bunch of errors so I cant go to the system manager. They are all towards the end and talk about allocation, like "Failure to allocate 0x1300000 buffer from browser container" or "borrow: system allocation failed" or "sysmem.alloc:global system allocation failed". What can I do? :(

when I downloaded the CFW it got me 4 folders "BETA 1" "BETA 2" "BETA 3" and "BETA 1" I tried to zip each one of them and none of them have the "md5.txt" file that yoou said is important.. please do you mind take a look?
So the 4.91.2 Cobra 8.5 Beta 3 download folder doesn't have an md5.txt file, how do I verify the hash? (EDIT: Ended up copying my flash drive copy's hash to notepad, reloaded the MD5 page, and then drag-and-dropped the PUP file from the download, and they matched! So all good, I think!)

The Evilnat CFW is in beta 3 and after downloading 4.91.2 there is no MD5 file. Only the PS3 folder with UPDATE and the readme. (Edit: i checked the forums where it was posted and the numbers match)

I have 4.91 on a chechk, yesterday the patch stopped at 90/75% and the ps3 really froze. I stopped it. Today I did everything all over with another usb and not pex/cex but cex. It stopped again at the patch at the same point 90/75% and 3.02 min. I waited for 5 hours despite my ps3 looks frozen. Nothing happened. What can I do to get cfw on the ps3. I do not haveca history on the ps3. Bought it yesterday. I tested BT en my drive they both works. Please help me to solve this if possible.

Bought a PHAT ps3 and smoothly jailbroken it with your video(it actually took me less time than the lenght of the vid ((after watching it 3 times))). Now the only thing i forgot about is how damn huge the PS3 really is !

hey not sure if you’re still seeking help on the missing MD5 file, but from my understanding, it is not ABSOLUTELY NEEDED. I jailbroke my PS3 without the MD5 file present.
Just make sure every other step shown in the video is followed perfectly, and that every other console qualification is met (compatible model and software number). On top of that, as long as you are downloading a file from the exact link provided in the description, you SHOULD succeed. I went with the CFW 4.91 Cobra 8.4 PEX download and mine did NOT have the md5 file either. I took the risk of continuing with the process as instructed and it worked perfectly.
Please keep in mind this was just my personal experience, but if it worked for me and for a few others in the comments as well, you all should be able to successfully jailbreak without the md5 file too. Good luck.

You can do the same thing with the CEX file found in the beta mega folder as the video instructs. I did it.

I just bought a fat ps3 today, A01. Works fine so far and the shell isn't too scratched up. Warranty sticker is removed, I wonder what it looks like inside. Installing the cfw to see what the runtime is and what my temps are. I really don't want to have to crack it open and apply more thermal paste. Sony is like the BMW of consoles. I'll update if I remember to.

Yep, only beta, that's latest. And I would absolutely recommend cracking that thing open, keep in mind it's an almost 18 year old console now.

It worked for me, just finished mine. For anyone who gets the following warning when you get the dump, I did a little research before proceeding which said the next step where you 'apply loaded patch' gets around that (so nothing to worry about if you get same as below). Thanks for this MrMario 🖤

You're welcome! I'll tell you what I've told people a few times: I would rather have verbose instructions that come with 20 comments complaining the video is too long. Historically, when I cut down on instructions and make them less verbose it would result in about 900 comments asking for more details 🤣
Just picked up a fat 80gb ps3 for $40 from eBay and used your previous guide to install cfw 4.90. I literally installed it like 2 days before Sony issued 4.91. I can now play PSX, PS2, PS3 and PSP games. I'm finding some PS2 games are playing janky, like Blood Will Tell. I checked the settings in Managunz and on my tv but nothing seems to fix the pixelation. Otherwise, it's great

Got a cech 2501b for $25 on Facebook yesterday, loud fan, but works great , if it bricks, no loss. A clean, thermal paste and cheap ssd will be the next steps before jailbreaking, understand the ssd will be very bottlenecked, but it will help with loading and texture streaming on a good amount of games... Excited 👍😅

Is there a bootloader that I can use with this, or is it included? I want to boot into linux from the bootloader, so I want to see something like grub2 giving me the option of where to boot. Does it turn the ps menu into a really bloated bootloader? No special boot sequence was shown in the video afaik so I can't tell.

The process is thankfully quite easy these days, not like the days you needed an E3 Flasher.

In terms of playing game backups and having emulators for older consoles, which would you recommend out of the Original Xbox or PS3?
I mean those are two totally different generations of consoles and makes. If you like PlayStation stuff more, get a PS3. If you want to play original Xbox games, get an original Xbox.

One question out of pure interest: When you're on the ps3tool-site and making this dump-file can you reuse it under the memory patch file tab? Or do you have to use the hardware tool you mentioned earlier if your console gets weird or you want to start over (for whatever reason)?

So for some reason when I hover the " .bin " file over the " drop here.bat " file, it does not let me drop it on there. It doesn't initiate any new dialogue nor does it grey out when I hover over it. Its like it doesn't do anything at all. What do I need to do to get that to work? Is there a way to run this file in the terminal on Mac? if so How?
Just wanted to give this heads up: If like me, you're having issues with getting to PS3 Toolset to fully actuate PS3 (assuming that your PS3 is comparable with CFW): Get you PS3 on a mobile network. Certain ISPs are causing an interference so that the site won't fully actuate with the console. Verizon was stopping the site from checking my PS3's firmware, but Mint/T-Mobile didn't seem to care.

What do you do if you have an old cfw installed and want to upgrade? not evilnat but another cfw? Also not hen as the console can take cfw. You mentioned at the start of the video if you have cfw you can skip the steps, but what steps exactly and where do you continue from? Can we get a vid say if you have 4.85 or so installed with cfw and want to put evilnat 4.91 which is the current latest? Do you just skip to the 29min mark and continue from there or do you need to do the steps before hand?

@@MrMario2011 oh got you. thank you. yep get what you mean and it upgraded now. just put the cfw to a usb drive, followed the folder structure and did a software update from usb. easy as that. thanks.
