Great info. Just one thought about snaffles: when pulling with both reins the bit cannot collapse beyond the width of the horse's neck, because the reins are kept at the width of the horse's neck. The only way it could be collapsed is if you cross the reins under the neck, which would be confusing to the horse and borders on abuse. Thank you.

I'm back. Recently had a bad wreck -- horse bolted on the trail and ran full gallop into a tree, so now have 2 fractures in my shoulder scapula. Normally well behaved, rides in a 3'" shank with a bit that looks like a single link chain. I ride with 2 hands, fairly soft. Need a bit that gives me excellent brakes without causing resentment from her. Thinking a Level 1 Mylar 5" shank for the moveable arms. Would like you opinion --- would a low port be too much of a change? Have also has mullen style suggested to me.

First try and evaluate what happen if you remember so you can fix any holes in the training. A 5 inch Mylar shank with roller will give you more control and a 7 inch shank gives you even more if you need it. Also make sure you have your curb chain adjusted from the chin 2-3 fingers depending how much control you need. The port gives tongue relief and most like the port, so should not be too much of a change. It's best to put them in the new bit and do some movements like lateral flexion and vertical flexion from the ground to make sure they are ok with it and also backing up before getting on. Then test it in the arena or roundpen so both you and the horse get use to it before going on the trail. I am very sorry you got hurt, the scapula is a big bone to break so that must have been alot of force, I am glad you are ok.
