  • Will is an educational technology entrepreneur who has a great deal of experience in looking at how technological innovation is impacting the classroom. In his talk Will argues that technology will not replace teachers, but rather enhance classroom practice in ways that we've never imagined and enable teachers to work with students like never before.
William Zhou is the co-founder and CEO of Chalk.com, an education software company focused in K-12. William has been passionate about entrepreneurship from a young age, founding his first company in high school. He launched his first Internet business in 2010, which he sold at the age 18 during his first year of computer science at the University of Waterloo. To pursue the bigger challenge of changing education, William founded Chalk.com to create a productivity suite for K-12 teachers.
Forbes recently named William to their top 30 under 30 list for Education in 2015. Today, Chalk.com is used by over 125,000 teachers.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Totally agree. We need technology to support us. Human interaction is key to learning.

The only time I want technology to replace teachers is when I meet discriminating, unfair teachers. Teachers are also human, they have their preferences and they treat students differently based on whether they like the student or not. Computers don't. Technology never judges.

it's going to get to a point that the only people making money will be robotics engineers or the creators also electricians.

And even in this case, one day, maybe in 50-70 years a robot AI engineer would be more eficient in creating machines than human engineers, and they would be replaced too

The entire education system needs to be automated, too many biased teachers who wrongfully accuse students. Nowadays most teachers don't even do their job anymore they just give us work and test us on it, then the next day we end up forgetting what we learned. It's a huge waste of time and money.

the future worker will not have to know anything. Therefore it is not necessary to teach them anything. The future worker will only need to be able to take instructions from the A.I. boss assigned to them. Some workers will be put in a chemical straight jacket (or get a lobotomy) in order to keep the human from deviating from the optimum solution prescribed by the A.I. But this will result in maximum productivity and everyone will be happy.

Technology allows those who want to learn to learn at a faster pace and graduate faster then others automate all the teachers

Universities are taking the best classes and using it. This displaces teachers. Without the cash flow from teaching, the whole research infrastructure of the United States will go down in flames. Grants don't fully pay the researcher salary. IF they starting doing so, that just means that the taxpayer will be financing the University profits. University (some of them) are not-for-profit. That said, extra money is extra money for the Provost, for the clique in charge
Not to mention that there is no royalties from using classes created by hapless teachers. They are taken advantage.
It is the Educational System shooting themselves in the foot, in realtime.

At least technology doesn't go on strike like the traditional teachers do!
CZcamsrs don't just stop making tutorial videos because CZcams doesn't pay them well, they make those videos regardless. It shows that they really want to contribute to the society.

So if technology saves them time, why is it that teachers are necessary? Us students can save our own time without having to go to some authoritarian school, so we can learn at our own pace at home the things WE want to learn, provided that we understand how to learn, and, most importantly, our parents letting us understand discipline out of prison (school).

Teachers not only educate but they inspire. Technology would be fine if the number of teachers per pupil didn't change and their salaries were increased. That will not happen. The people who makes decisions are the people who wants to have the taxpayer not paying to educate your ids (they are Republicans). So, this would always be disastrous in the United States

Do you know what is meant by education and teachers? And, what is meant by Cosmic or natural intelligence? Technology is the gift of GOD. technology should be and will be implemented on our progressive and incremental potential field. we could be integrated and progress ourselves through technology. So it's just a medium. That would unleash our potential. Don't hype about technology, think about the good deed or innovation or work or objective sense of beauty in terms of consciousness and energy. Don't waste much time thinking about such silly topic. Human interaction creates a magnetic field. Do you ever realize that frequency or power? Practice gratitude and kindness. One day one MIT-ian wrote in a article that in near future(2040-2050) the super artificial intelligent machine will be asked "WHERE IS GOD"?... the answer would be "here, right in front of me"...my name is Somnath. again, SOMNATH. ADORE.
