Jazz Pianist
Biography
Pianist Joey Alexander is an extremely gifted jazz musician who first came to the public's attention as a prodigy before the age of ten. Born Josiah Alexander Sila in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia in 2003, Alexander was introduced to music by his father, an amateur musician, and jazz aficionado. By age six, Alexander had taught himself how to play piano by listening to albums by Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, and others. Without formal training, and initially only playing on a small keyboard his father had given him, Alexander achieved a high degree of proficiency. By age eight he was jamming with local professionals, and in 2012 had the opportunity to play for Herbie Hancock, who was visiting Jakarta, Indonesia as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. The following year, Alexander won first place in the Master Jam-Fest in Odessa, Ukraine. In 2014, Alexander relocated with his family to New York City, where Wynton Marsalis invited him to perform at Jazz at Lincoln Center's gala. Several more high-profile shows followed, including appearances at the Apollo Theater, Juilliard, and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Many of these performances were widely covered, with viral videos of the proficient Alexander popping up online. In 2015, Alexander released his debut album, the Jason Olaine-produced My Favorite Things, on the Motema Music label. Recorded when Alexander was only 11 years old, the album featured the pianist backed by bassists Larry Grenadier and Russell Hall, drummers Sammy Miller and Ulysses Owens, Jr., and trumpeter Alphonso Horne. Featuring eight standards and one Alexander original, the album garnered Grammy nominations for Best Instrumental Jazz Album and Best Improvised Jazz Solo. A year later he delivered his sophomore album, Countdown. Produced by Jason Olaine, the album featured contributions from bassist Grenadier, drummer Owens, and saxophonist Chris Potter. For his rendition of the John Coltrane-penned title track, Alexander earned a Grammy nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo. ~ Matt Collar - Hudba
Love the venue. Musicians have to walk down to the stage. Joey looks like he might grow up to look like Daniel Craig's James Bond's Q.

That kid prodigy is now becoming an adult prodigy... but don’t call him that! He wants to be called “a jazz musician”. Call him whatever you want, this guy makes me cry and sends me beyond the clouds. Hope he can come to Hawaii sometime... Aloha, Pierre
I also prayed Joey would come to Hawaii too. Lo and behold, received answers prayer…he came to the Big Island of Hawaii, Kahilu Theatre, May 25, 2022. It was fantastic….he is definitely gifted with amazing musicianship…God bless Joey and hope to see more of him here in Hawaii. Thank you, Joey!
I'm so glad this "once in a lifetime musician" came in my lifetime!
Joey just gives me hope for humanity everytime I listen to him play. The bass player and drummer deserve their props as well. Master musicians at the top of their game. My soul dances when I hear Joey Alexander perform.
Love so much your song., especially lagu “Bali”. Terus perkenalkan denting2 asli lagu Indonesia dalam gubahan lagu Joey 🙏🙏🙏
respect to all of you who doesn't turn on your god damn phone while these masterpiece was playing
So much talent..and so gifted..He breathes new life into jazz..Keep goin' Joey..
Oh, my God! Ulysses Owens, Jr. is astonishing on John Coltrane's composition, Countdown. His magisterial performance is evidence of the teamwork of the three members of the trio. As Thelonious Monk commented when asked what the role of the pianist was in a jazz trio, he replied that the pianist's role was "to make the drummer look good." Here's the proof! Ulysses Owens Jr. sure looks good!
Listening to this guy and the other two absolutely amazing musicians he is playing with has put the biggest smile on my face. I just love these wonderful guys and their amazing music.
As an Indonesian, I am so proud of Joey. He sure is one of great jazz pianists on earth. God bless you always.
Does it really matters he "is" Indonesian? Being a human being doesn't suffice !?
Keren banget almarhum Glenn, Isyana dan Joey Alexander.. generasi musik Jazz yg mengagumkan dunia, inilah mengapa di Amerika Joey dipelihara banget karna dia adalah aset dunia..
First time saw joey live at one of jazz lounge at jakarta 2012..made me shocked at that night..all the crowd were talked this kid should be a star..congrats joey!!!
Excellent musicians. Mr Alexander did a great job on the Steinway D!!
The innate joy just oozes out of his performances. I think it's awfully hard to listen to this without smiling.

This young man is something special! And to think...he's gonna get better! WOW!!!

Joey Alexander y su gran trío perfecto gran baterista magnífico pianista buen contrabajista magnífico concierto
count down to what? infinity of joy? complete trust in themselves and each other
Just incredible. No words.
Joey Alexander absorbs ideas from other musicians like few others I've ever heard. Maybe some of the ideas he comes up with independently. I'm hearing some Ahmad Jamal in his music. He's already explained that his influences include McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock.
I'm hearing Chick Corea in there too. I think Joey Alexander just listens and absorbs ideas directly. He can assimilate what he hears immediately into his music. He doesn't need scores.
puji Tuhan Joey Alexander Trio!!!
One of my favorite composition of Joey probably a tribute to his country I love it
Indonesia welcoming their genius son

I am truly blessed to witness such great young talented musicians play such awesome music. I absolutely love this jazz music. May Joey be blessed for years to come.
This guy has opened my 76 years old eyes. I am really not much of a believer in God but this little miracle may have been sent by God to prove to me and all of us that there are some awesome, amazing and just so spectacilar elements in this world - that all is not just about greedy business men and corrupt politicians and climate change! Wow! So there is some very real good! Wow! Wow!!! Wow!!!!!!!
Oh my god. Great concert Joy Alexander trio at jakarta

Amazing trio... now, since Joey 's 19yo, I'm waiting for him to fall in love and see how his music will be 😉
Eighty-two grandfather here. What a pleasant thought! If anything could make him better it would be love.
Man!! Wish there was English caption!
Proud to be Indonesian... but Joey please don't go back here except for some live shows or holidays haha.. coz you could turn into pop and waste your supertalents.
why is the audience so chill? i'm nodding like mad in my room. can't hold the groove
Mrk ky nonton musik klasik aja 😆
When she introduced him in the beginning of the video, it seemed to me she pronounced his name like "Joy" and now I can't undo that - it's perfect - JOY Alexander.

Walaupun joey asli indonesia lahir di bali negara indonesia, ingat joey adalah salah satu aset dunia yang di rawat baik oleh para musisi dunia. Joey alexander milik dunia. Bukan milik indonesia. 🖐😊
Benar skali musisi2 ingin musik jazz comeback melalui joey Alexander dan musisi pecinta Jazz yg lain.. Smoga dia smakin berkembang dan menciptakan karya-karya musik jazz..

Apresiasi musik orang Indonesia terhadap jazz modern masih sangat kurang. Entah yg nonton memang mengerti tau sekedar hadir saja krn mau lihat Joey yang sudah kelas internasional.
Kalau sudah mau menonton "gaya" musik begini berarti datang bukan sekedar menonton saja tapi sangat banget ajang apresiasi musik jazz modern supaya orang indo semakin bagus apresiasi musiknya. Btw di menit 32:00 perform iki bebob
bangett..
wkwk iya, makanya di indo lebih banyak lagu popnya dari pada jazz.. susah dicerna :v
