    That first game at Easter Road v Partick Thistle - all the women in my office (who had no interest in football !) came along with us !. I couldn't believe the crowd when we got to the top of the terracing, the place was jam-packed !. I don't give a **** about all the 'He was past his best' talk - he was still head & shoulders above anyone else and it was an honour to see him !

    I was at those games when George played for us, he was a true master, I went to one of the midweek games with my dad and we were on the top bing and to see how his football brain worked was truly amazing, it was like he was three moves ahead of everyone else on the park, and that was when he was at the end of his career a true genius !

      Depends on what you mean by well Jason. Was he the best player on the pitch? Easily. Was he remotely close to what he had been from 1966 to 1969? Nowhere close but then only a handful of players in history have played nearly as well as he did in those three years.

    See if you get the chance to read the book about the time George played for hibs by John Neil " when George came to Edinburgh " there are some great stories in it from people who met him e g john the taxi driver, Arthur Montfort scotsport, gingling geordies pub, how he helped the reserves. Really worthwhile read and I think you can get some of it on the net. It showed George as a decent down to earth person.

      Old timer....The game that stuck in my mind was a midweek game at Easter Road against Dundee and George Best was fantastic, I could not believe what I was seeing, he was a class act. I wonder if this was the same game you remember. I watched Turnbulls tornados and european games against leeds, Liverpool, and Juventus but I never saw anything that matched George Bests performance that night. Billy Bremner came very close to matching it when he played at Easter Road in 1973, but George was more silky and skillful, Billy was more guts and passion even though he did do keepie uppies on his own goal line while being pressured by Hibs forwards!

    • @oldtimer5111
      @oldtimer5111 Před 5 lety +2

      johnsparky2 I honestly can't remember, i remember watching the game and everything went through him and as the old saying goes, you can tell the quality of a player by the amount of time he seems to have on the ball, he was always in space , never under pressure ( even though he spent the whole game, or so it seemed, just covering about thirty yards either side of the half way line and sprayed the ball around better than anyone I have ever seen. On the odd occasion anyone got near him he could still beat them easily with the drop of a shoulder then ping a thirty yard pass right into someone's stride, pure class is an understatement of his ability, I wish I had seen him in his pomp, I doubt there has been many better.

      Truth Seeker. I went along to Easter Road on a Tuesday night in March 1980 to watch Hibs play Dundee, the added bonus was that George Best was playing for Hibs. Hibs won the match 2-0, Best scored one goal and made the other and he ran the show. Jack Adams match report the following day in the newspaper included the following phrases, "George Best stamped his own special magic on this game", "Best slit open the Dundee defence with a 40 yard pass which the other 21 players couldn't even imagine possible", "George Best turned this soccer wake into a memory that the fans will cherish for many years" I watched the great Leeds and Liverpool teams of the early 1970's play Hibs and the great Celtic teams under Jock Stein and none of their players came close to the talent that an ageing unfit George Best showed for 90 mins that night under the floodlights at Easter Road.

    I hugely find Old football are better than today when players play for pride , dignity and to ensure football values , i mean , surely there is some players nowadays who compete for their clubs because they love them but half only think about money and economic benefits more than the team itself . and that's sad how things have turned around that way :/

    His first game was away against St Mirren at Love Street I witnessed over 23,000 sell out Crowd which normally drew less than 5000 and he actually scored on his debut. Big Craig Patterson was right about his home debut but wrong about his first game for the Hibs. Greatest British player of all time played for Britain's pioneering team in Europe the Fabulous Hibees.
    Georges' mother when asked said he wanted to be a Christian Minister of the Protestant religion before he chose football, wow the irony. I shed a few tears as he died. A true legend. GGTTH glory to God through Christ Jesus.

    Tavy@ yes he was past his best! But when you watch him here against a very good strong rangers team he just stood out from the rest the way he glided about that ice rink of a park. The players couldnt keep there feet without the ball.lol. The way best controled that ball on hes chest and IN the air, then he played the best pass i have ever seen, he chipped the ball over 2 rangers players and right onto the feet of arthur duncan or tony higgins who then passesd the ball to jackie mcnamara a thinck who scored a good goal from the edge of the box. But it was that pass from best that split the defence. Then he set up the second goal to beat rangers 2-1. But george could and has played on ice rinks to swamp mud parks and with those old leather wet heavy balls they used. Imagine him today? With a carpet as a pitch or a bowling green, and with those much lighter balls and the diets and the way they keep fit now. Not that best needed to be taught anything. He just had to stay fit and he couldv played on till he was 42 at least. Easy! Then from 42 maybe drop into defence till he was 50, easy! What people forgett or dont know is best could play anywhere on a park and be the best player there. Pat crerand said george was a better defender than he was a forward. No one could touch him today. He didnt run around for 2 mins or do a pathetic dance when he scored. He just put his arm up to say thanck you for the applause. Even though yous wont see another goal quite like that. It does piss me off a bit to thinck he was away by only 25 years old. He did go back after 5 or 6 month a thinck? But he had put on at least a stone in weight and it just wasnt there any more, 6 months drincking and lieying in the sun in spain and eating alot every day!!! Then at 27 he walked out for good but he was done by 25 really! Its one of footballs biggest and saddest tragedys!!! R.I.P GEORGE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Tavy@ its still hard to believe george best played for hibs! A thinck football fans always thought that best would never come to scotland to play for any scottish club. It just didnt sound or seem right lol. Becouse george best could still earn alot of money in places like london doing other work for tv companys wich he did. But a believe he thought iam still only 33 and players that were naturaly born footballers know ye never lose your skill, like passing, long and short. And control. Like the control we saw him do here on hes chest then that pass, the way he chipped it right over 2 players and onto a plate for tony higgins a thinck. That pass was sublime and one of the best if not the best pass i have ever seen. And on a pitch that was coverd in ice, but no problem to bestie. And how easy he makes it all look. When he gave the ball to dereck johnstone for bringing him down and from the back, he tried to hurt best. Becouse best just made him look stupid, rubbish, and yer playing with real players now dj. lol. A know people that saw the full game and they said it was a pure joy to watch best up close and live. And they were rangers fans.
