    Richie Smyth: Early days on the Pop album Paul needed a piece to show the record company what was coming down the line. i shot the band recording and mixed it with B-Movie footage. Howie B came in as vibe master and Flood and Nellee gave me very early mixes to work with. The last footage from Cuba was shot by the late great Donal Gilligan.
    i shot on super 16mm and Super 8mm over 2 days.

    This just proves my point that from Pop onwards, U2 got into a habit of massively overthinking and overcooking their albums. Maybe if they hadn't spent so long re-mixing and then mixing again and then un-remixing and then re-re-mixing and then doing a final mix on the way to the mastering lab, this album would've been more successful and true to what it was originally meant to be. Don't get me wrong, the final product is still INFINTIELY more imaginative and innovative and worth listening to than practically everything they've ever done since but from listening to this, it sounds like they lost the essence of what the album was supposed to be at some point along the way.
    I think they should've used Zooropa as a model for how to make albums as far as time scale and creativity goes. Just ride that first massive wave of creativity for as long as it lasts and then dive off and get the album out there. Don't ride the wave in until it no longer exists and then sit on the beach wasting time waiting for the next one which might never come...

  • @jasonlefler3456

    A lot of what ended up on Passengers and Pop was inspired by the band’s time in Tokyo at the tail end of the Zoo TV tour in December 1993 (see U2 At the End of the World by Bill Flanagan).
    With that in mind,
    I have constructed a hybrid of those records that might’ve been a double album in a parallel universe.
    I call it Shinjuku,
    based on an area of Tokyo that Bono mentioned in a Much Music interview after the last Zoo TV tour show.
    I really emphasize the dance mix vibe upfront.
    Pop Muzik
    Mofo {some blend of the album version and the Mother’s Mix}
    Discotheque {DM Deep Extended Club Mix}

    Do You Feel Loved
    Gone
    Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me
    Last Night On Earth {First Night in Hell}
    United Colours
    Elvis Ate America

    Staring At the Sun
    Theme from Let’s Go Native
    I’m Not Your Baby
    Hallelujah
    Corpse {These Chains Are Way Too Long}
    Wake Up Dead Man
    If God Will Send His Angels
    One Minute Warning {featuring Holi}

    Beach Sequence
    Miss Sarajevo
    Ito Okashi {featuring Holi}
    Slug
    Your Blue Room
    If You Wear That Velvet Dress
    Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad
    I see it as starting in the nightclub,
    then on the bullet train home,
    waking up hungover,
    on the beach,
    followed by a quiet night in.
    The Popmart tour EP would’ve included
    Miami,
    The Playboy Mansion,
    Mofo {Mother’s Mix},
    and the rock version of Discotheque.
    Please and North and South of the River fit thematically yet feel outside of the non-political vibe of this collection.
    That could’ve been a separate single.

      4. If You Wear That Velvet Dress
      5. Gone
      6. Stay (Faraway, So Close)
      7. If God WIll Send His Angels
      8. Last Night On Earth (Including that kickass Solo they used to play Live)
      9. Please (Single Mix)
      10. Wake Up Dead Man

    The grestest mistake U2 made going into this album was to give away so many great songs to other artists or projects instead of keeping them for the Pop album, they gave away half of the album, Miss Sarajevo, Thieve of your heart, Goldeneye, In the name of the father, Your blue room, I'm not yout baby, Hmtmkmkm, Holy Joe. What an album it could have been.

      They didn't give away "Miss Sarajevo" and "Your Blue Room"; they released them under the Passengers moniker on Original Soundtracks 1 (OS1). Now OS1 *should* have been released as a U2 album, IMHO (a few months before its release, it was listed in a Tower Records computer as an upcoming U2 album titled Always Forever Now), but they chose not to do that in the end, unfortunately.
      Also, I believe "Goldeneye" was created specifically for the movie itself; to my understanding, it was not a track they had in development that they just gave the filmmakers. The same is also true of "In the Name of the Father," I think.

      Everything on Pop is infinitely better than the predictable music they've released 2000 onwards, Pop was U2's last masterpiece, flashes of brilliance on each album but few and far between, the nearest they got is NLOTH and that's a good album, Pop was a great album, it's brave, experimental and 25 years ahead of it's time, you can actually hear Larry and Adam, who were incredible on this album, Discotheque, DYFL, Mofo, IGWSHA, Staring at the Sun, Please, Last Night on Earth, Gone, Miami (incredible live), Velvet Dress, Gone, Wake up Dead Man, Holy Joe should have made the album instead of the only dud on the album Playboy Mansion, the Popmart tour was truly incredible, i was 14 when Pop released March 1997 and it was the first U2 album i bought and it blew me away, my friends who only like dance and hiphop love the album, they dont like any of the new ones, 90's U2 were the best band on earth, now they are good but they used to be great, it's just taste mate, i prefer when U2 are brave and experimental rather than predictable, been waiting for a quarter of a century for them to blow me away again but each record they've released has been overdone, too many cooks, trying too hard to get hit singles but they used to be better, as Bono said in 1994 at the grammys "....we will continue to abuse our position and f***** up the mainstream" now they are part of the mainstream, regardless of our different views i wish you well and respect from D9 Ireland 🇮🇪
