  • This is part 2 to a prior video I did about reusing a laptop screen by getting a new control board via eBay.
    In this video I make a new frame for the laptop screen along with a backing plate to mount the control board. This helps protect the screen and makes it easier to use.

    I'm going to give you an A for a solid re-purpose of an LCD screen. certainly better than it ending up in a land fill. Sure, you've basically wired up an inexpensive monitor but none the less an excellent project. I think the control board is less than $20 so again, decent project. Well done.

    Surprisingly exactly what I was looking for. I searched up "How to make custom monitor frame" and this showed up. I am trying to reuse an old Chromebook screen as another monitor. I also have the same LCD controller board open on Ebay in another tab. I am doing the exact thing he is doing, it is really weird

    Use push sticks. Always demonstrate safety first when cutting on a table saw.

    Hi, great tutorial, I have your own board, it has an integrated audio chip, very convenient for connecting two internal speakers up to 2x5w, I have connected them with a small connector that of the lights of the cabinet for PC. Wau, beautiful realization. Bye bye.

    Simple but elegant. I am using a shadow box for my Rpi

    Hi, thanks for posting this video. I am planning to do something similar but to actually hang it on a wall. It would make my desk look neater AND would be a cool warm up before the smart mirror project that I'm also hoping to do. I will have to use a help of someone who actually cut some planks in their life because I'm a total newbie in that.

    Can you get a control board with Bluetooth/WiFi/airplay ?
    Put it on a kitchen cupboard door for the wife :)

      Maybe, but I haven't seen control boards with bluetooth/wifi/airplay.

    I have the idea of using a raspberry pi and a pi camera with VNC viewer to setup a remote home surveillance system. Awaiting components to proceed with the project.

    So how do you dis-assemble it for maintenance or to change any of the components, if it´s glued all around?

    • @MakeFixUpgrade
      @MakeFixUpgrade  Před 3 lety

      You'd have to break it apart. So far this one is still working for me.

    Hi Crushing,
    I have a MacBook Pro 2011 15". It's useless and I'm gonna turn its screen as a second screen.
    Could you help me with what exact controller board (fix with it)that I need to buy for it?
    Thanks,

    • @MakeFixUpgrade
      @MakeFixUpgrade  Před 4 lety

      You'll have to lookup the control board based on the display label on the back of the screen that's in your laptop. It could be any of several options.

    I wanna do this but I don’t have any of the tools is there anywhere I can buy a custom one

    • @MakeFixUpgrade
      @MakeFixUpgrade  Před 4 lety

      Do you mean a custom frame? If so I'd check local woodworking shops or maybe cabinet makers and see if someone could cut out the pieces for you. Just check and double check that all your measurements are correct before you give them the dimensions.

      @@MakeFixUpgrade I agree with you fully, thinking of using old pallets. Seen a few local craftsmen making crates, will ask for their assistance.
      I am unemployed due to the lock-down epidemic and searching for innovative ways to upcycle old laptops.

    What size screen and measurements

    • @MakeFixUpgrade
      @MakeFixUpgrade  Před 5 lety +1

      The screen is 12.5in x 8.5in... or approx 31cm x 21cm

    • @elenvee_tgm
      @elenvee_tgm Před 3 lety

      @@MakeFixUpgrade So once I have the screen size I can proceed to cut & join the frame?

    • @MakeFixUpgrade
      @MakeFixUpgrade  Před 3 lety +1

      @@elenvee_tgm correct. I made my screen inset into the frame, but the size of your screen and the design for your frame will determine the size of your frame. I would recommend not making the screen fit too snug in the frame. If I did it again I'd allow a small amount of clearance between the screen and the frame to allow for any heat/cold expansion and contraction. This way there is less stress on the screen itself. You could use some light foam or spacers to keep the screen from rattling around.
