Well done. I started playing at 35 and played live to an audience before I was 40. I’m now 48 and I play everyday, still learning and still gigging. Starting late just means you’ve filtered out all the shit music and have better ears to practice with 😂
You stumbled across a great teacher! If you can learn this stuff early on in your guitar playing you’ll be mikes ahead of most. I’m 35 but but picked up so many bad habits early on and stubbornly avoided theory and thankfully I realized that was dumb and am learning before it’s too late 😅

I had spent 35 years in a dark room of screaming pain from a head injury spinal injury. It was the fear of God and my guitar that saved me. Im amazed at the music that I'm able to sing and write. I don't know if it's a quality of the guitar itself and how it reflects light, or if you're simply lighting it with a blue light, but the blue glowy effect it gives your guitar here is WONDERFUL :) Even the strings are picking it up. Electric, mysterious, kind of aura-y. Very nice :)

I was studying and had you for about 2 years and this alone is really cool as I am just rounding the corner on Triads basics. I see more patterns then ever all over the neck. working on chords forms on all the keys. After I retire my need will grow after learning a song or 2. Thank you for this lesson. My stroke in 2016 took my whole right side of my brain off line for good. I understand what you did here but it has been slow but still have patients. Thanks

This stuff got me out of the dreaded guitarists rut some years ago and I practice the major scale and the diatonic chords all the time. It almost feels like cheating.

Amazing video Chris you showed me how to put together with our dinu but I didn't know I knew it that's the crazy part of it I just didn't know it and not text and now I do man thanks a lot my speed from last night to tonight is amazing just a couple hours of practice that's all root on any string I just never looked at it from that angle. My next question would be how to use that information musically in a solo or just showing off. I ran it through the scale every way I know how to. Never once could understand how to build the dim chord. An well that's over it took almost 5 yrs. Lol thanks again
Sorry didn't proof read that should read. Put together what I already know but didn't know I knew it.
Just take the Major chord and then shift the 5 and 3 down a half step (1 fret) for the dim chord.
I use this in solos, to compose, and to just drill my fretboard knowledge deeper and deeper.

Hey Mr Chris just stumbled on to your channel yesterday and liked your teaching so i have a question so i have been playing guitar for about 4 years now and it seems like ive been not learning anything the past 2 years because i dont know what to practice ive always been afraid to go to the higher frets on the neck ive just stuck to simple chords and at the start that was enough for me but i wanna learn more like how to solo and learn the neck and just the end goal is to be able to express what im feeling and hearing in my head on my guitar so my question is where should i start what should i practice? Ive only watched a couple of your videos and ive found them helpful but a little confusing i know it will take a lot of years of practice to learn what i want i just need to know where to start and what to practice, thanks
Well if you want to understand the instrument, regardless of the genre you prefer, then I'd look at the "watch these first" playlist and start there. I designed those to be really fundamental for understanding the fretboard.
From there, it would be get your Barre chords down, then the major scale, then triads. That should keep you moving forward!!

I’m 52 and I’ve been “teaching myself guitar” since I was 18-back when I bought my first guitar. I write my own music, I do covers, and I’ve played in bands and gigged around in local bars…THAT was a GOOD lesson!! Nicely done, sir!! I subscribed to your channel based off that one lesson! Excellent clarity and explanation of music theory!! Love it!! Young players sometimes think that smoking pot, getting drunk, and cranking the amp to 10 will replace the need to learn music theory…it won’t!! 😂😂😂

E major barre chord shape... Your third finger is on the third string (G) and it's the third note in the chord.
I think you mean middle/second finger?
Isn't the caged method basically the same thing with out the explanation of how and why it works !

Add the 7th and you are now playing soul and r&b
CHRIS, Ritchie Blackmore would climb up and down "in 3rds Tertian movement" either WWHWWWH or Harmonic Minor W-H-W-W-H-(-3)-H the -3 is a minor 3rd interval or Phrygian dominant H-Aug2-H-W-H-W-H. You use these half steps, whole steps scale formulas when moving up and down 3rds which classical composers would do. You can make riffs doing intervals like this in a tertian movement. You mentioned it in the video to do major, major, minor, major, major, diminished which is a tertian movement. You should try to make a video lesson about this because deep purples riffs are based on tertian movement themes and motifs just like classical composers would do.

@@curiousguitarist Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Jerry Garcia would use triad note groupings moving the triad note groupings up or down in half steps or whole steps based on the major keys or minor keys. You can hear them using major triads, minor triads, diminished triads over a ONE Chord Vamp which is considered modal playing which they got from jazz composers. Ritchie Blackmore would use note groupings or triad note groupings and move them up or down based on the harmonic scale or phygian dominant mode scale. What I'm saying is you have to APPLY the Half steps and Whole Steps movements when SHIFTING the note groupings or triad note groupings referenced to a SCALE/MODE played over a chord progression or VAMPS. You should do a video lesson about this because this is a major part of lead guitar playing. Those guys knew the major CAGED system, Minor CAGED system, Diminished CAGED system, Dominant CAGED system. Which you somewhat mention in this video lesson. But its better to just show all 4 CAGED systems because you have to know all 4 CAGED systems, Most only know the Major CAGED system.

@@curiousguitarist I'm just suggesting things and getting you ideas to think about. 80's guitarist use power chords so the chords don't have the 3rd which you can move triads shapes like maj triads, min triads, diminished triads, dominant triads over the chord vamps or chord progressions because the 3rds was removed/omitted from the chords you're not tied down to the circle of 5ths so you can play non-diatonic tonalities or dominant tonalities which is not diatonic to the circle of 5ths. You video lesson was showing how to get the maj triads, minor triads, diminished triads, dominant triads but the next step is how to use them.

So show them how to pull a scale.outnof a cord start with four notes ....four notes three cords .....all those things are great but they actually teach you to sound like a student not a player and you will not advance no pro did this till after they developed thoer style doc Watson told me that ....
I always sound like a student when I’m studying. Then I sound like a musician when I’m performing. And then again I sound like a beginner when I’m developing a brand new skill.

I no longer use a whole barre chord. Lost the whole bar and focus on the top four strings instead. It frees up a finger and I can wrap my thumb if I want that low e. Doesn’t have much to do with the video, and I doubt anyone cares what I do. Hahaha…. Nothing to see here, just commenting for the algorithm…(nice excuse huh?)

@@curiousguitarist I was watching an old Bob Marley VHS tape back in high school and saw him doing that technique and I adopted it. I learned a lot watching old concert tapes and documentaries with live footage. Now a days with CZcams it’s on demand. It’s pretty great. Thanks for so what you do! Cheers!
