    If you noticed on episode 3, originally Zoltraak has a black color as opposed to Frieren's and Fern's white color~
    It's still the same Killing Spell BUT Frieren modified it to specifically do lethal damage on demons~ she is as they said, GENIUS~
    Plus, Japanese Title Drop on the end there~ Sousou no Frieren~ gives me chills!

      In the original manga there is no color difference so while Friren did modify the spell the color change when Qual uses it is just an aesthetic choice by the animation team.

    So a fun detail. The title of the series has two meanings (neither of which is the official one Beyond Journey’s End which is just a completely original title they gave the english version). Sousou no Frieren can be read as Frieren at the Funeral a clear play on her long life and watching people pass away as she lives on but it also can translate as Frieren who brings the funeral or as the series phrases it Frieren the Slayer which is the in world title the demons gave her as the one who has killed so many of them. It’s a neat play on the duality of the series one part somber and melancholic and then one part action and adventure.

      in japan "葬送" can be two meanings, can be send her friends to funeral also can mean slay her enemies. 葬送のフリーレン means Frieren who slay her enemies, or Frieren who bury her friends like the title "one Beyond Journey’s End " but conside the story is bittersweet story, one Beyond Journey’s End fit the style

      @user-lj6rc7sm5n Před 10 měsíci +8

      Frieren the Undertaker is a bit more accurate, as "sousou" is [properly] sending someone to grave/funeral. It doesn't necessarily mean killing, and it can work with both friends and foes. In the beginning everyone thought the "sousou" term was referring to her sending her friends away due to her long lifespan. Only here do you see the other side of the meaning of the term as it referred to her demon slaying records.
      It's just a pity that the English audience never gets the 100% satisfaction of the title drop here due to this whole English title problem. It's like what happened in Attack on Titan, the title drop lost its full impact because the title of the work didn't 100% correspond to Eren's Titan. Yeah you can explain and yeah you can be made to understand. But just like explanation of a joke. it's just not the same.

    • @Nevri.
      @Nevri. Před 10 měsíci +13

      @@wingw3844 To be correct. 葬送 simply means visiting the funeral or sending the dead off. It's just author is stretching the usual meaning a bit and gives it another context. Demons basically call Frieren someone that visits you to send you off to your grave. They literally treat her as Grim Reaper. I personally think "Frieren of the funereal" carries the 2 potential meanings the best, as it could be understood as "Frieren that attends a lot of funerals" as well as "Frieren that *causes* a lot of funerals"

    When Lugner said Draht wouldn't die to underestimations, he was saying that they are so strong that even underestimations should not make a difference and surely would not make him lose his life. That's why they immediately contemplated what sort of strong adversary he must have faced.
    Again you three came out with the best reaction out there so far on Frieren 8. I really like the parts where each of you took on a character's viewpoint to look at the same event and analyze the character's motives, actions, and justifications. Really a fun and intelligent discussion overall.

  • @Nevri.
    @Nevri. Před 10 měsíci +21

    There was multiple potential factors why Stark and Fern didn't finish demons there. Granat was in really bad shape, so not only he could die from his wound, he might simply end up dying in cross-fire and Fern needed time to cast another spell (that's why Stark was buying time for her in the first place), so he'd need to defend both her and Granat, which wouldn't be that easy since Linie was about to attack them and they did not know what magic she has. Also Fern failed to finish off Lügner and they had no idea how fast he could heal and join back the fray. So basically despite getting the jump on the demons, they still were in disadvantaged position.
    So this episode had a ultra cool title drop moment that was completely missed, because title of the series is localized as Frieren, Beyond Journey's End, which granted sounds cool and fits the series and OG title is hard to TL, but that's kinda translator's job. Basically "sousou" in Sousou no Frieren usually means attending a funeral or sending the dead off, so demons literally call her someone that visits you to send you off to your grave. They basically treat her as Grim Reaper. I personally think "Frieren of the funereal" carries the 2 potential meanings the best, as it could be understood as "Frieren that attends a lot of funerals" as well as "Frieren that *causes* a lot of funerals"

    A few things reactors, or just people in general miss while watching the show.
    1. Graf Granat. "Graf" is not a name, it's a title, in the German nobility to be exact. I'm not too sure what the English equipment is but if I had to guess it would probably be the title of Count.
    2. It's not just humans that advance technology, the demons do so as well. They are not as weak as most people seem to believe. Stark and Fern have all the reasons to be afraid of them. Up until this point, both of them have only ever fought against wild beasts and monsters.
    3. Fern could not just blast the demons out then make their escape. For one, they have a severely injured person with them, and Stark is already carrying that man, making the potential battle a 2v1. Second, Lugner is unbelievably calm even tho a portion of his body is already gone. Who knows what he could have pulled off then. There was just way too much risk in fighting there, and sending a blast before leaving is only asking the enemy to pursue them then and there, which Fern and Stark clearly don't want to happen.

      Fern is good but still young. In this world, younger fighters have advantages (even including Aisen as compared to himself), but for mages, older mages would have accumulated more magical qualities (you will see later what these entail) and would do better than younger mages. These demons have been around for more than 80 years after all.
      You will see in the next episode or two how these factors play out.

  • @Ahjenta
    @Ahjenta Před 10 měsíci +11

    I like how they casually revealed Frieren's massive contribution to humanity's ongoing struggle against the demons. She led the research in analyzing Zoltraak (Soul Track), a demon spell designed to kill humans, so humans now have defensive barriers and upgraded gears that can negate the spell. Then she modified Zoltraak so it specializes in killing demons instead, and have it incorporated into the human's magic system as "Ordinary Offensive Magic", meaning it's an entry-level spell that is taught to every apprentice. Now even a beginner human mage is equipped with a specialist spell designed to kill demons.
    Talk about tipping the scale heavily in favor of humans. I can see why demons like Lugner both fear and hate Frieren, and that's not counting how many of them she has sent to their deaths herself as "the mage who has killed the most demons in all of history".

    • @DarwinAwardWinner
      @DarwinAwardWinner Před 9 měsíci +5

      It's funny, because in Episode 3 she explained to Fern that humans analyzed Zoltraak and came up with countermeasures, but she left out the fact that she herself was a major contributor to that effort. I'm guessing she arranged for her contributions to be omitted from that history book she had Fern reading as well.

    • @Ahjenta
      @Ahjenta Před 9 měsíci +5

      @@DarwinAwardWinner I actually think Frieren left it as an exercise for Fern to figure out when she reads the book. Their whole conversation reminds me of a student who didn't read her assigned reading before going to class. Every time she says something, the Professor replies "You wouldn't say that had you read my assigned reading." So finally the student read her assignment after class, only to discover her Professor is a pioneer in the field and practically wrote the book on the topic.

    • @DarwinAwardWinner
      @DarwinAwardWinner Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@Ahjenta I've been thinking about this a bit more, and I have a theory: Frieren was 100% truthful when she told Fern that humans were the ones who came up with countermeasures for Zoltraak, because her own contribution was in analyzing the spell and figuring out how it works. Then humans took that knowledge and developed countermeasures, while Frieren took that same knowledge and modified the spell into a demon-killing spell. I don't have any proof for this, but it certainly seems on brand for "Frieren the Slayer".
      As for the history books, I wouldn't be surprised if Frieren had arranged for her name to be left out in order to keep the surprise for the next demons she ran into. And it doesn't feel like Frieren's style to insist that Fern read a book just because she herself is featured in it. Even if this is the case, though, it also wouldn't surprise me if Fern was able to read between the lines and infer that Frieren was involved despite not being mentioned by name in the book.

    • @Ahjenta
      @Ahjenta Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@DarwinAwardWinner The term "humans" 人間 in Frieren's world can also be used as a catch-all term that includes humans, elves, and dwarves. Eisen, for example, is called the strongest human warrior even though he is a dwarf. So when Frieren says humans deciphered Zoltraak etc, she could mean it as a combined effort from all 3 races.
      Considering it was Lugnar who says Frieren is a major contributor in humans deciphering Zoltraak and adapting its use, I think what she did is pretty well known by both sides of the conflict.
      Re-watching ep. 3 and comparing it with the manga, it is interested to note that when Qual uses Zoltraak, its black in color and the kanji in the manga says "Human killing magic"; whereas when Frieren and later on Fern uses Zoltraak, it is white in color and the kanji in the manga says "Demon killing magic". It's a very nice touch highlighting the differences between the 2 versions.

    Just caught up on all your Frieren reacts. It's been great watching you get closer to the characters and more invested in the plot! Just one question, when you started the series in episode one ya'll reacted like some mistreated dogs at first. You kept expecting the WORST to happen to different characters, like you were afraid of being lulled into a false sense of security. What the hell did you watch before this? 😂

  • @shehmo
    @shehmo Před 10 měsíci +4

    The EN translatiom secrewed up big this time.
    The Japanese title of Frieren is actualy Frieren, The Undertaker.
    This infers that she has to undergo the death of all her loved ones.
    It's not slayer. Wtf is slayer fr?
    So when the demon called her Frieren the "undertaker", he was actually referring to the Title of the work.
    The translation is so incorrect and is so anticlimactic to audiences who know the original text.

      Im pretty sure this is the first out of a lot of ppl i see someone see Frieren the Slayer as 'anticlimactic' LMAO

    • @shehmo
      @shehmo Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@yuuta.1013The mistranslation made Frieren look like Goblin slayer. But that would be horrifyingly shallow.
      葬送 means digging graves for others, it means mourning, it means undertaking, it forshadows Frieren's immortality. But it does not mean slayer.
      There is a reason why the Title of the work is called "葬送"のフリーレン and also why both her allies and foes call her by the same title "the undertaker." And EN translation just threw the topic sentence into the trash can.
      This giant plot hole cannot be covered by "oh but I think it's hype."

    • @originalesp
      @originalesp Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@shehmo It doesn't make any sense for a demon to be labeling her with that context though. They don't have funerals, they won't even know what an undertaker is. Even if their bodies didn't dissolve they aren't gonna bury their dead. It's a literal translation that loses the meaning for the sake of preserving a pun. A pun that won't even reach the audience cuz they have a different title.
      Also, what allies call her that? Nobody in the story has called her by that title except for a demon. They'd call her something more heroic.

    • @shehmo
      @shehmo Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@originalesp You have to ask the author about the setting. But the word 葬 itself means funeral.
      Maybe the author has her own plan, and the last thing a translator should do is adding unfaithful additional context before the author even comes up with the idea, especially when it's the one line that echoes with the WHOLE story.
      Write your own story then.

      That's not the point. The point is appearances. If he appears to be trying to have them assassinated by a mage, his plan won't work. And he does not know that the "mage" is actually powerful enough to finish the deed. If the unexpected mage failed, his plan is kaput.
