  • Everyone who homesteads would love to make a little extra income while they do it right? There's lot of ways I have thought about making a little extra cash, and recently I came up with the idea of selling the thousands of black walnuts that fall from my trees! Walnuts? Seriously can you make money from them? I'm doing a quick experiment to find out and may do a trial run this year to see how viable harvesting walnuts for profit could be in the future.
    Here is the website of possibly the biggest wild walnut harvesting company in the world:

    Oh my this video is just hitting the spot. My daughter had picked a whole bunch of walnuts and I was drying them and someone said stick them on your back steps in the Sun so I did. Hours later I forgot about them and I asked my son to bring them in and they were destroyed the squirrels we figured got at them. So we went back to the farm a family friends farm to get more and it was almost like the squirrels were laughing at us because they're sat in a pile they had rallied all the walnuts together and taking them and left the black pile of debris. We almost cried so we will learn and try for next year. Yes many had told us the value of them and also how amazing they are to bake with ugh next year thanks for your video we're Learning

    I have one tree here in Alabama--I heard someone at the farmers market was selling them. I give mine to a couple of friends, and save the rest to cook with or eat. We had a bumper crop this year. Mine always are big and very tasty. My tree started bearing about 3 years old--I ordered the tree from a nursery, it was very cheap. I have a lot of small trees I would sell if anyone is interested. These nuts trees do very well in Alabama. I became familiar with these nuts growing up in Indpls, IN.

    So I have a walnut farmer friend who has 11 acres of English walnuts. The electricity to power the well water to water the trees, paying the pickers, paying for the equipment and paying for everything else to get the walnuts to the wholesaler now costs more than you make. The wholesaler only wants to pay $0.11 per lb now. What can someone do to stay in business to sell their walnuts?

    We just did this yesterday. Husk weight is about 2/3 or 3/4 of the total weight. We had 10 huge 3 ft x5 ft bags filled; total of hulled nuts was a little over 700 lbs. $129. The drive was about 45 miles each way. The experience paid for the gas and a bit more, but I don't know as we will do this again. Perhaps if the location was closer, but...

    About 72 buckets give or take for $100 and you gotta get them there. Unless you have lots of cheap help and a big trailer I'd pass on that one.

    Do you have to wait for the nuts to fall on the ground, or can you pick them off the tree?

    • @WhistleThicket
      @WhistleThicket  Před 3 lety

      Yes, wait until they fall to the ground. The first ones to fall a few weeks ahead of time are usually not fully developed. Then you have to crack open and let dry for about 2 months!!

      @@WhistleThicket I just checked that Hammonds website. Unfortunately, they don't have locations in New Jersey, where I live. Plus, even if they did, I think it would be very annoying to transport the nuts without a pickup truck. I don't know if I could fit enough in my car. Do you have a truck?
      I'm wondering if I can just sell them on eBay. Do you think anyone would buy them on there? I have a big black walnut tree in my back yard and it surprised me that Hammonds doesn't collect from here, because I've heard that NJ is one of the biggest places for black walnuts.
