Omg I really want to read the book! I wish I could have experienced watching the movie in theaters back in '73. Looks like such a wonderful and innocent time but sadly I was born 19 years later!
No modern horror movie can come close to how terrifying this movie is. It feels so real and the psychological aspects of the movie are really unsettling. Not just one of the best horror movies of all time but one of the greatest movies ever made. The book is just as scary.
The theme as set out in the film is that the demon is in the girl to make us question God's love, and the power of God over creation. I think most people don't have that to begin with. They don't even have a belief in good or evil except as it applies to them, interpreted as license or restraint. This is why the film has not impact for them. A man who has never owned a horse cannot fear losing a horse.
The one thing I wish they used in this movie is that in the book the mom is an atheist so that would’ve been amazing to explore her take on faith and finding out heaven and hell are real like the existential dread she might feel would’ve given her real character depth
The way the devil goes "that's much too vulgar display of power, Karras..." shows how manipuative it is.... like I'm here, but I'll only do as I please, when I want too. It's also mocking Karras, displaying it's power at the same time saying it's too vulgar to display it.... the whole thing is just brilliant
The glare she gives him after she vomits on him was even worse. This movie doesn't scare me too much but there are definitely a lot of disturbing/unsettling parts that creep me out like that lol
Originally, the script called for it to only hit him in the chest, but the prop director aimed the pea soup spewing machine too high (on purpose, I believe), and it hit the actor in the face instead. His reaction of disgust was much more genuine, as he wasn’t expecting that, so it was left as is.

The ‘pea soup’ sick scene is absolute class. According to behind the scenes stories, they used pea soup that was connected to a vat behind the bed with a tube that led to Linda’s outer mouth. They had to do a few retakes so the soup got a little cold or something so the guy controlling it turn it up and when he went to ‘distribute’ the soup, it was suppose to land on his chest but ended up landing square in his face, The shocked reaction is real and he was not a happy bunny. They did a few other takes but this is the one they chose purely for his reaction 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Actually, Friedkin told him it would go on his chest, then told the effects team to shoot it on his face for the reaction. He did that a lot, like the scene when Chris is thrown across the room. They pulled her hair back way harder than they told her they would. Friedkin was a borderline sociopath when doing stunts, but we got some great cinema out of it.
This is my favorite movie of all time..Linda should of won an award for this film..she was only thirteen...without that devil voice from mercedes mcambridge it wouldn't have worked...unfortunately you can easily see they used a another woman for the vomit scene not sure why cause it was very noticeable
V R She was actually only 12 when she began filming. Still she was very impressive for her age and she did everything she had to do perfectly. She nailed this role.
V R & olive oil Linda was *nominated* for "Best Supporting Actress" for this movie, but she lost the Oscar to Tatum O'Neal for her role in "Paper Moon", & Tatum was 3 years *younger* than Linda. Here's the Oscar clip: czcams.com/video/tf2J8hktI5Y/video.html
I think the most impressive scenes of Linda Blair is not her scary facial expressions but her sparring conversations with Karras, thats where her acting is just through the roof, there is no doubt she conjured all the slyness and evil grins of the devil with such pin point precision you totally forgot this is the same innocent little girl in the first part of the movie ...
in some scenes another woman acted as Reagan, and that woman is also the real face of Pazuzu, that flashes 3/4 times in the movie (the pale face, with big eyes, and scary teeth). Her name is Eileen Dietz.
One of the creepiest things is look at her eyes when Damian introduced himself as her mother’s friend. She looks up at him... then she looked away and said that he was here to help her. She looks at him again. Like she’s not some little girl, this is a full on demon and it’s fucking crazy!
This shit’s still pretty scary. Now imagine showing this to a generally Christian, suburban moviegoing crowd in 1973 whose experience with horror films ends at Frankenstein at maybe Psycho. Imagine how virulently, traumatically disturbing this film would be to that crowd. It’s no surprise people regularly vomited and fainted in the middle of screenings. This movie changed horror forever, and (to slightly misquote Beetlejuice) it keeps getting better every time I see it.
Linda’s pure hatred in here facial expression towards Karras and Mercedes’ voice when she says “In here. With us.” Is phenomenal. Decades old film but still scary as hell today.
A lot of things made this a great movie, the acting was top notch, William Freidkin was in his prime as a director, the effects were brilliant, the book was a masterpiece, but the heart and soul of this movie was Mercedes Mccambridge and the character she created using her acting talents and her voice.
Just listened to the audio book and it’s incredible how much more dialogue this scene has in the book. Definitely recommend reading/listening to it if you haven’t already 🔥
Watched this again last night..never fails to entertain...just super!..the script is amazing..the Devils answers are faultless...i genuinely don't think there's another horror film close to this...love it..✌️🇬🇧
Would I be labelled obsessed if I admit I saw this movie thirty-eight times and own the real Roman Ritual with the rite of Exorcism? After this movie, one can only imitate; nothing this brilliant has ever been created since.
Karras is pretty clever questioning Pazuzu's claim to be the Devil. I think most people would've just taken him at his word from such a terrifying presence, he certainly puts up a good act as the devil. But the priest knows it would take a lot more than a couple pieces of fabric to restrain the real Satan, as well as the absurdity that something of his caliber would take any interest in possessing a random girl. Such petty antics could only be the work of an inferior demon.
It's incredible how scary the girl is. How can't they know how to do that today? I was comparing this demon with the movie Pope's exorcist (2023), and this 1973 movie is way scarier. The face, the eyes, the lips, the voice. This movie made me afraid of beds for years.
@@smrtn240 I don't think the demon impersonating the begger or Karris mom has anything to do with them going to hell. But like you said the purpose of him impersonating both is to both make Karris feel guilty about not helping them in life,as well as proving that this is indeed a demon inside a little girl
The entire film is about losing faith. And when someone loses faith in something they become more vulnerable and easy to manipulate. Sound familiar? Look what’s going on in society today.
Oh man when she says can you help an old alter boy? Some people didn't pick up on that but that is the scariest line in the movie. Like God, the devil is all knowing...👹
1:30 The hose that sprayed the soup was aimed wrong. It was meant to hit Jason Miller on the chest but instead it went right into his open mouth. The shock, disgusted and frankly pissed off look on his face was genuine. That really pissed off Miller. Also the bit where the Karras’s phone rings while listening to recordings of Reagan. Karras jumps out his skin when the phone rings……… That’s because, unknown to Jason Miller (Karras) William friedkin the director was standing behind him with a shotgun and fired it into the air to make Jason jump. Then they edited out the gunshot and put in the ringing phone. Lol
This dialogue alone is the kind of top notch screen play you do not see in other possession movies ... gosh this movie is an absolute example of the finest in movie making in every aspect, the only small little complain I have is that they should have taken out the head spinning scenes and spiderwalk as those scenes do look too much like a dummy and a cheap gimmick but aside from that one little quibble (which can be easily corrected just by a single snip of the scissors), this movie is a prime candidate for the most well made movie of all time, no doubt about it ...
If The Exorcist was added as a collab in Dead by Daylight to tie in with the new Exorcist: Believer movie, to dedicate the memory of the director who died recently or the obviously celebrate the 50th anniversary, I thought of a perfect voice actress for Pazuzu as a successor to Mercedes McCambridge, Cindy Robinson (The voice actress behind Queen Beryl, Amy Rose, etc.) she would just use her Libra/Zafina voice with rasp, she’d also do the demonic chesty wheezing breath vocals

She didn't get the oscar but later on she got the golden globes for the performance. Rightfully deserved because she nailed it.
in some scenes another woman acted as Reagan, and that woman is also the real face of Pazuzu, that flashes 3/4 times in the movie (the pale face, with big eyes, and scary teeth). Her name is Eileen Dietz.
Till this day, there's still no movie that can touch this... A master piece...
Father Karras is amazing.
For me, it’s the “I’m not Regan” line that scares me shitless.
This scene.. THIS SCENE GAVE ME NIGHTMARES MORE THAN ANY OTHER ONE
One of the best scenes ever in a movie
Just listened to the audio book and it’s incredible how much more dialogue this scene has in the book. Definitely recommend reading/listening to it if you haven’t already 🔥
It's superb, wish the film had those longer scenes where the mind games are really stepped up, the demon really jabs hard at karras straight away.
Watched this again last night..never fails to entertain...just super!..the script is amazing..the Devils answers are faultless...i genuinely don't think there's another horror film close to this...love it..✌️🇬🇧
This scene is scary and funny at the same time.
RIP William Friedkin
i've heard catholic priests say this is a mockery of what satan is really like.
What's funny is that in these times, the devil might not even scare us. Too many demons out there we meet everyday
Damien karras is awsome
Mercedes McCambridge was Reagans voice over...
No she played pazuzu
He got the Nickelodeon treatment 🤣
"Can you help an old altar boy father."
Why does that part scare me so much lmfao
@Ben Fisher that makes it even creepier! Omg
It's meant to show that the begger died and went to hell to make karras feel guilty
Also ..."dimmy why you do this dimmy"
jj martin faam
@@smrtn240
I don't think the demon impersonating the begger or Karris mom has anything to do with them going to hell.
But like you said the purpose of him impersonating both is to both make Karris feel guilty about not helping them in life,as well as proving that this is indeed a demon inside a little girl
1:30 after taking the 4th shot of whiskey.
😂😂😂😂😂
Been there. Only my whiskey vomit doesn't look like guacamole.
@Quake Guy I'm lesbian and I got a wife.
BAHAHA
“Where’s Raegan?”
“In here, with us…”
Such a creepy response.
The demon wants Carras to doubt, he's manipulating him
The entire film is about losing faith. And when someone loses faith in something they become more vulnerable and easy to manipulate. Sound familiar? Look what’s going on in society today.
@selinakyle2368 It's a great movie, but if you need religion to be a good person then that is kinda sad
@@prototypefilmproductions faith has nothing to do with religion. I didn’t even mention religion in my comment.
@@selinakyle2368 What do you mean by faith then?
@@prototypefilmproductions bloody hell. Watch the movie again. Practically every character in the movie is losing faith in something.
Now this is a horror movie.
You never ask a demon questions. It never takes orders.
I read that people in the theater in 1973 ran out screaming when watching this movie!
Still scares me to this day..
Oh man when she says can you help an old alter boy? Some people didn't pick up on that but that is the scariest line in the movie. Like God, the devil is all knowing...👹
Or all trolling...
It's not the Devil.
35 years old and I still get goose pimples from the utter fright of this film 😖 It’s the only film that does it to me lol
48 actually
goose what?
One of my all time favorite scenes.
For all the movie hype and wildly outdated gore, the beauty of the character of father Karras hasn't aged one bit
I'm guessing his mothers maiden name was: vomit
0:59...................
"Yes, mom will you get out of there please?"
"You're no fun."
"I'm working."
"See you later Mrs. Karras."
Scary Movie 2 😂
1:30
The hose that sprayed the soup was aimed wrong.
It was meant to hit Jason Miller
on the chest but instead it went right into his open mouth.
The shock, disgusted and frankly pissed off look on his face was genuine.
That really pissed off Miller.
Also the bit where the Karras’s phone rings while listening to recordings of Reagan.
Karras jumps out his skin when the phone rings………
That’s because, unknown to Jason Miller (Karras) William friedkin the director was standing behind him with a shotgun and fired it into the air to make Jason jump.
Then they edited out the gunshot and put in the ringing phone.
Lol
That's it. Downloading right now. A trip down memory lane
This dialogue alone is the kind of top notch screen play you do not see in other possession movies ... gosh this movie is an absolute example of the finest in movie making in every aspect, the only small little complain I have is that they should have taken out the head spinning scenes and spiderwalk as those scenes do look too much like a dummy and a cheap gimmick but aside from that one little quibble (which can be easily corrected just by a single snip of the scissors), this movie is a prime candidate for the most well made movie of all time, no doubt about it ...
best horror scene ever= the crucifix, "SEE WHAT SHE DID? YOUR CUNTING DAUGHTER"
Heavenly rule #2 “ Never engage conversation with the adversary....!!!!”👹
If The Exorcist was added as a collab in Dead by Daylight to tie in with the new Exorcist: Believer movie, to dedicate the memory of the director who died recently or the obviously celebrate the 50th anniversary, I thought of a perfect voice actress for Pazuzu as a successor to Mercedes McCambridge, Cindy Robinson (The voice actress behind Queen Beryl, Amy Rose, etc.) she would just use her Libra/Zafina voice with rasp, she’d also do the demonic chesty wheezing breath vocals
The way she says "I'm not Reagan...." damn
Linda Blair the exorcist
Voice by Mercedes McCambridge and behind this heaviest makeup... Was it Pamelyn "Lucy" Ferdin?
This is a very realistic Demonic voice.
sound like roaring animalistic human voices
Done by a little older lady Mercedes Macambridge. She makes the movie terrifying
"Yes mom, will you get out there, please?"
She looks so funny with the nose piece though 😂
Then am the devil now kindly undo these straps
They have a point lol
The scariest movie ever made.
Note to self.. never question the Demon when they have an extreme sour stomach……
One of the most haunting lines in the scene is when he asks “where is Reagan” and she responds “here with us“ fucking chills every time
" if that's true you must know my mother's maiden name what is it " WHAT IS IT "
🤮 In yo face that's what it is !
1:30 No, "BLEAUGHHH" is not her name.
Today, 10/01/2023...I am sharing this movie with a dear friend...we are both in our 50's...She has NEVER seen it and I watch it on Christmas EVERY YEAR! She arrives soon. HBO MAX. Sunday Matinee...charcuterie and some nice chianti...with a tenderloin spleen! Happy OCTOBER ALL!
This movie is from an era we will never experience again. For example, the huge crowds outside the cinema, waiting to watch movies like this one or the many 70's blockbusters is something difficult to explain to the young ones. #TimeTravelNow
Unfortunately The Exorcist is one of those movies that simply cannot ever be remade, reimagined, or rebooted. When you blow something so far out of the water with that level of achievement, just drop the mic. 🎤 it would be like saying let’s do a sequel to the wizard of oz 😂
Agreed, nothing has come close to this.
Ragan sounds like the Devil from Hell amazing Demonic voice 😎🖤😈
Played by a nice little lady.
@james Kirk Mercedes Macambridge
Your mothers in here, would u like to leave a msg?… “yes mom would u get out of there pls?!… “ur no fun!😂
0:55 "Can you help an old altar boy, Father?".
If I was in that room with a little girl looking the way she does here, and she blurted out a line like that from my past from an incident she could not possibly have known about or have any connection to, I would fly from that room and out of that house faster than you could say "Holy shit!!!!". Scary stuff, alright.
