  • How to make your Kaweco Sport fountain pen write wetter! ⚠️ Do not attempt this if you cannot afford another nib unit replacement ($14 USD)!
    My Kaweco M nib has always given me trouble. When I heard you could MacGuyver the nib and feed yourself with just an Xacto knife & brass shims (super affordable tools, btw) I thought, why not? I had about 4 other nib units to spare. May as well give it a shot.
    My first go-around, I was too afraid to damage my feed, and had no idea what flossing my tines would do. So I used the smallest gage of brass, and barely added pressure while razoring the feed channel. In this stage, I think all I did was clean my pen a little. Which was fine. It added a touch of juice. But I needed more.
    In stage 2 and 3, I got progressively aggressive. I added more pressure, even going so far as to attempt to shave off sides of the feed channel slightly with my Xacto blade, then flossing out whatever was left behind with my shims. I also graduated to the largest shim size when flossing my tines to really nudge those babies out wider. This gave me the juuuuice I needed! 😍💦 Next time, I’m skipping straight to flossing my feed and widening the channel instead of taking it easy with an Xacto. BUT! Starting gently gave me peace of mind I wasn’t totally nerfing my nib unit.
    Now my fountain pen writes with much more lubrication. Like a slip & slide on the page. I’m putting all my shimmers & shaders in here!
    Good luck attempting this at home! Save it and share it with your pen friends to spread the knowledge around! 🥰

    Yeah, I've noticed Kaweco pens tend to be on the dry side... I might try this, but whoever decides to go the same way might want to know this voids the warranty :)

      I’m too afraid to try it.
      I’ve heard people talking of juicier inks. I’ve just got to do trial and error.
      I’m disappointed with the flow of my Broad Kaweco.

      @sophiaannelizabeth I'm a novice at doing stuff like this and I was able to do it to my Kaweco Sport easily. It's just the cheaper plastic model though so I wasn't too worried about it. Steel nib units aren't super expensive and they come with a feed as well so there was that option too. I think you could do it.

      You can replace the nib and feeder if you really mess up, but very unlikely.

    my EF nib was atrocious and this helped it a bit. But I'm a little peeved at how bad the nib is on my pricey Kaweco AL sport. for that price, I shouldn't have to mess with it!
    Thank you for sharing this!

      I know what you mean. :/ The ink also makes a huge difference, BTW. Some are dryer than others and make even the best pens feel extremely scratchy! I recommend Pilot Iroshizuku inks and Monteverde inks which are wet and flow extremely well, especially in an EF nib! It’ll make a huge difference if you haven’t tried it yet.

    Fun mod!
    You have good dexterity, so it doesn’t necessarily apply to you. But out of an abundance of caution I recommend others to use the hobby knife in the opposite direction (from tip to base). If the blade slips through the tip, it can gouge and lose the ability to delivery ink up into the nib slit.

    Good ❤ But i like dry flowing because in office which papers are available for writing that's quality is not so good so using wet flow is causing off spots of ink on both side of paper thanks for this video i can try with new pen for my daily writing at home and my sweet daily diary writing

    Thank you very much! My pen arrived just today, and i was pretty dissapointed, because i thought EF was my nib type, but ink came out so badly, that i ordered M. Now everything is better, but i wont cancel the order anyway, because i still dont like how sharp it is and how it scratches paper

    Now try using another ink 😅
    The fun part about this is that you’ve now optimized your feed for one specific ink and paper combination.
    If you use a wetter ink, your pen may very well be too wet 😢

    • @eggbunni
      @eggbunni  Před 9 měsíci +4

      I wouldn’t say I customized this pen to work well for “this specific ink,” but rather for MOST of my inks which are dry compared to Diamine, Monteverde, Pilot, and Sailor inks. 🥲 I only really put dryer inks in my broader nibs for the most part, so for me, this works well! And what’s great about Kaweco nibs + feed units is they’re easily replaceable and affordable, so getting a standard M nib again isn’t really a big deal!

    Better using a razor blade. And, specially if the edge without sharp is grind to make it in some angle to push dirt up when it goes across the slit.

    • @eggbunni
      @eggbunni  Před rokem +3

      Yes - when I used a thicker gage of brass shim, it helped widen + clean out the feed channel. I should have started with it first but I wanted to be safe and conservative!

      No, they are all the same, metal, plastic, doesn't matter. Try twisting it a little while pulling.

    What happens if it's wetter ??? Atleast when dry you can use it on normal cheap paper ??

    • @eggbunni
      @eggbunni  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I don’t use cheap paper with this type of nib. I use it on fountain pen friendly paper like Midori MD, Tomoe River Paper, Cosmo Air Light, 120gsm paper, Leuchtturm 1917, etc. 👍 When the pen writes wetter, pastel inks that are illegible write with more saturation. Also, shimmer inks that flowed poorly before now unload shimmer more easily on the page without getting clogged. :)

    Do younuse the brass shim only from the back of the nib? Or frpm the front too?

    • @eggbunni
      @eggbunni  Před 10 měsíci

      I use it from the back. You can do it from the front, but you run the risk of scratching the surface of your nib and making it ugly.
