We visited the awe-inspiring Big Buddha in Phuket, Thailand, in May 2024, and the experience was absolutely divine! The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful, calm, soothing, and relaxing.
Apart from the majestic statue itself, one of the main attractions of this place is the magnificent views of Chalong Bay and the Andaman Sea, which the statue faces. You can see yachts floating around near the harbor, and the view gets even better as you climb up the stairs and go closer to the feet of the Buddha statue.
Important Points about Big Buddha Statue, Phuket:
Official Name: The statue's official name is Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Eknakakiri, meaning "the Cherished Auspicious Lord Buddha atop Nāga Hill". The name blends native Thai, Sanskrit, and Pali words: Phra Phutta means "Lord Buddha", Ming Mongkol means "cherished and auspicious", and Eknakagiri (from Sanskrit/Pali ekanāgagiri) means "atop Naga Hill".
Statue Dimensions: The Big Buddha statue depicts Lord Gautam in a sitting position and stands 45 meters tall (148 feet) and 25.45 meters wide (83.5 feet).
Material: It is covered with Burmese white marble. Facing Ao Chalong Bay and the Andaman Sea, the statue serves as the main Buddha of Wat Kitthi Sankaram temple (Wat Kata).
Cost: The statue cost 30 million Baht (approximately $950,000 USD as of February 2019), funded primarily through donations.
Join us on this serene journey and experience the tranquility and grandeur of the Big Buddha in Phuket!
