  • Low brace for sea kayak-Great for beginners
    dancingwiththesea.net/more-st...
    In this video you will learn the first step for an effective low brace. You will learn how to move your hips to make your bracing feel more powerful and automatic. If you don’t use your hips you will need to use your arms and push down on the paddle, which can cause it to sink. By using your hips to sweep the paddle forward you get a lot more support. And the paddle stays on the surface of the water, ready to keep bracing if needed.
    Why so much emphasis on the hips? Look at any sports and ask yourself where does the power come from. Whether it’s throwing a ball, playing tennis, boxing, soccer. The power is generated from the powerful hip muscles. And when you unlock your hips to use that power for bracing avoiding a capsize feels easy. And you enjoy yourself more.
    This idea of jamming your hips in place for kayaking may be useful for river kayaks. However for sea kayaking I prefer to use the hips for a more agile and natural movement. The kayak becomes an extension to your body, not a prison that stops you from using your most powerful muscles. If you are feeling the pressure on your arms and shoulders I recommend you click the link above and watch how to adjust the fit of your kayak so that you can control it with ease.
    Here is a recap of this video:

    Paolo - thanks for this. It was 'the missing link' - concentrating on moving the hip - the rest of the body follows. I have just improved my coaching - gratitude.

    Thanks for the amazing video! Definitely subscribed. Question on the Greenland style paddle that you were using in the video. What brand is that and does it come apart into 2 pieces?

    I don’t know if you will see this but I have spoon paddles, also called scoop I think. Is it possible to do this with these paddles as they can get caught in the water very easily

    Paulo, why do you have that board on your foredeck?

  • @ikkeennietjij
    @ikkeennietjij Před 3 lety +1

    If you have any forward speed you don't need forward paddle motion when bracing. I learned that 32 years ago. It is standard practice, here in the Netherlands. But... this forward motion of the paddle makes it a low brace sweep...

      Thanks for bringing that up. I'm sure I would have figured it out at some point, but glad to learn sooner than later.

      It doesn't have to take much time if you practice the right techniques.

      That sort of boat looks extremely limiting and no fun to roll at all. Probably paddles better than your average SOT, but is nothing I'm interested in. Thanks for sharing.
