The Dodgers Aren't Helping Gavin Lux Right Now

  • The Gavin Lux experiment needs to end. Not just for the immediate success of the Dodgers, but the future of his MLB career. As his season continues to tread water, Lux is getting a runway to playing time that plainly isn't earned.
    And could be hurting Gavin's career long term.
    I break down other internal options whose play should be earning them chances to play at the big league level. And while they're getting those opportunities, Lux can return to the minor leagues and potentially find something that clicks for him offensively.
    The Dodgers told us he'd get 150 at-bats to find himself at the plate. He's blown past that mark and there's no breakout in sight.
    There's some tough love for Gavin Lux and more on another edition of the All Dodgers Podcast.

    Friedman loves: reclamation pitching projects - especially those coming off of Tommy John & average, small, utility players with no pop and the same player type profile - no slug and all potential/hope. The fact that Vargas has had a shorter leash than Lux tells you all about what this organization values.

    I've said it's not right to expect much more from Lux (due to the recovery), having said that, I do agree 100% with you in that sending him to OKC to get his reps and confidence there might the best route (for him and the team), at least to regain trading value since now I don´t see teams giving much for him. But they should do that ASAP to give him time in case they might need him come october since the Dodgers might (sadly) think they're set.

  • @ryanc9876
    @ryanc9876 Před 10 dny +4

    I think Lux has been given enough length this year. And I truly believe the injury last year is a large factor into the lack of offense this year. Be it mental of physical, he just doesn't have it. His defense has been really good, so we can give him that. But the issue is that he's stuck at second base, a position Mookie was meant to start at. If his hitting was there, then I'd have no issue. But obviously, it has not been. I don't know if I want to see him out of the org, but I don't want to see him starting as often as he is. He could be a trade piece, as I believe one day he'll get back to being an average player, but I don't think it'll be this year on this team.
    Option him or trade him. Especially since this is supposedly a "win now" year.

    • @alldodgers
      @alldodgers  Před 9 dny +1

      Agree with everything you said here. This situation puts the Dodgers in a tough spot -- in the immediate and in the long term.
      Perfect scenario: he's optioned to AAA and accepts that it's the best thing for the team, himself, and his career. Starts getting some hits and building some confidence with the bat while at the same time beginning to play some shortstop again.
      If the long term plan for the Dodgers is Mookie Betts at second base, shortstop is the only path to playing time for Gavin. ALSO, him proving he can play shortstop again will make him a more attractive option for other teams if he ends up being traded or non-tendered or something (he will not be non-tendered, but you get my point).
      Appreciate the conversation here, Ryan!!

    I could be wrong on this, as I'm not in any way on the inside. But it seems like Lux is kind of a baby about moving down too. There seems to be a sense of entitlement with him. Other players seem very willing to work on themselves, and to move down to get better if needed. I didn't really hear anything from Outman about being moved down. He went there and got better, and now is back up. With Lux, it seems like there is a lot of noise and disruption when he is sent down.

    Lux is gonna be in the next trade deadline deal at this point. Once Betts returns, he will be the one manning 2B for the remainder of the season (and perhaps beyond). VERY disappointed in the Dodgers for holding on to this kid for as long as they have. I never saw him as a long-term fixture at either SS (lol) or 2B for them and that was before the knee injury he had in ST that ended his season last year. Made me mad they traded Michael Busch to the Cubs instead of him, though they might finally get something out of that deal depending on how LHP prospect Jackson Ferris (had a heck of an outing today for High-A Great Lakes, 7 innings of 2-hit shutout ball with 11Ks and 0 BBs) and OF prospect Zyhir Hope progress through their farm system. Sooner they close the book on Lux this season, the better.

And if you don't know how to value a player there are these things called 'stats' and they're a collection of numbers recorded during a game that a baseball player has played in to show where they did or didn't perform well. And before you ask me, Google exist there you can find "inexpensive" options if you care enough and the stats needed to properly value a player.
