It may have worked that way back in the stone age but sorry, that info is way outdated. The transponder and the IFF system while tied together are separate systems. An IFF challenge isn't just a set of pulses, it's a coded challenge based upon a daily code that is uploaded into the system by the crews of the radar system and the aircrews. If the IFF system recognizes the code as being correct it sends back a coded reply of it's own that the radar system decodes and if it's correct it'll put the correct symbology on the screen indicating a friendly craft. While a PPI display ruled the radar world for decades, now days the displays are digital and a computer controls where and when to put things on the screen.
Its all fun and games until EW enters the arena and your IFF and radar gets flooded and jammed lol
