First Start of the Big Turbo N20 build!

- I finally got everything together and am able to move the car under it's own power. Only issue is, I have some exhaust and boost leaks I need to address. The car is only able to make around 4 psi but, after some investigating I found some major leaks in our hot side vbands. I tried smoothing out the surfaces and using copper RTV but didn't have any luck. I did find some 2.5" and 3" vband gaskets that should do the trick, just waiting on those to show up. I found a massive leak on the BOV and Wastegate but got both of those fixed up. I am currently running the OTS stage 2 tune just to check for leaks and see how things are all working but I did write my own tune that seems to be running just as good. I will probably do a quick video on the tune I made and how I adjusted the fuel density, timing, and all of that for e85 and the extra boost at some point once I get it all dialed in.

Giving me hope to build my n20
It's definitely been fun and a learning experience. One thing I need for sure is more practice welding and some gas so I can Tig instead of mig lol.

awesome video man! my full respect for pulling this stunt, honestly the most intriguing build i've seen in youtube. hope you sort out the leaks, after getting a proper tune you are all set! the idle sounded really well without exhaust. my guess for building boost might actually be the port injection at low rpms, i've seen people doing this on the b58.
It was definitely the up pipe and crappy ebay wastegate. Got them both figured out but my primary o2 sensor died. Waiting on that now to finish up the tune!
I’ve been keeping tabs on this build from the beginning , and honestly it is giving me a serious understanding of how great this slept on platform can become .

Yo! Going great, I have been working with BM3 behind the scenes to get the ROM updated for the N20 to allow an external wastegate with a bigger turbo! I just heard back this morning that they added it. I have my own custom tune I built but still chasing some hardware issues. I'll put out an update video soon!

So far it's been great, only issue I had was buying a cheap wastegage off ebay. I have been fighting with it for about a month. I finally spent the money and ordered a TIAL, should be here in a few days, hopefully I'll have an update video soon. I also got BM3 to add the EWG delete drop down on the N20 tune. I''ll def post a video about that soon.
Hopefully you get the leaks figured out and everything straightened out, i know it's frustrating, I'm in the same boat, about to start putting my car back together in the next several days when the rest of my parts arrive. Waiting on timing chain and guide, valve stem seals, the special tool spring compressor for the intake top springs then i can get all that done and start assembling all this stuff. Ive already lapped the exhaust valves, they weren't bad at all. The valve stem seals were hard as a brick though and they aren't supposed to be that hard. Good luck the rest of the way, the car sounds awesome.

@@projectrandomCO Not quite sure. I'm definitely taking my time. Lol...I didn't make a video on it but got my new rings in the pistons earlier tonight. Should have the rest of my stuff sometime tomorrow according to the tracking details.

Hey man, sounds like it could be the bearings, a broken valve, or a seized piston. Does it rotate backwards? Oil? Coolant?
Hot enough! Or gate spring check and diafram if gate opening too early!
Checked the gate spring it actuated at 14psi so I'm good there, definitely the up pipe vband leaking, at least that's part of the problem. Gaskets will be here tomorrow so I should know then!

Yeah, as soon as I can build some boost! I had some footage, but it was mostly me mashing the throttle and not going anywhere lol. Should be sometime this week once I get the gaskets.

Haha, maybe. I am not a fabricator but I could definitely try and start making some real kits. I am sure they would sell pretty well, seems like a lot of people want to go down the same path.
Don't forget about the intake manifold gaskets, they're cheap and blowout over 21+psi
Any suggestions on upgrades? I have the oem orange ones in there still. I have my map set at 23 psi for now until I can get everything dialed in. I have to put most of the power up top so I don't blow out my transmission.
@@projectrandomCO I don’t know any good upgrades for the gaskets, but I’m sure you can find an aluminum intake which might help the life of the gasket (just a guess).
Since your making your own tune make sure you tune the boost to kick in after 3500 rpm’s. I’ve heard a lot about the weak points of the engine being low rpm high load issues.
Thanks again for documenting all this stuff, I’m on stage 2 with 165k on my N20 so your channels gives me the motivation to do a bigger turbo swap.
Ah, I haven't been able to find a manifold anywhere for the N20, I assume I'd have to custom make one somehow. I have to ramp the boost in super slow since the transmission will be stock still. Tune seems alright so far, still testing lots of things, there are thousands of parameters but it's been really fun to learn.
@@projectrandomCO bmw b48 air to water intake might be a good take for this build considering the turbo you are using, also there are custom gaskets that support port injection for them

Yo, 400 reliably would be easy with a bolt on turbo and some upgraded internals with supporting mods (intake, exhaust, downpipe, intercooler)
I have a 320i with N20 did you need to get forged internals for bigger turbo? I plan on 700+ horsepower
Yeah, Forged internals and a whole lot of upgrades. 700 would be hard to hit reliably. You need an upgraded trans after 400hp or so and forged internals with every supporting mod. Fuel pumps, injectors, intercooler, custom tune, etc

Hey! I put an update on the community page but plans changed again so I am staying in Colorado. I have been prepping to move the last month and had a last minute change. Back to the car content soon. I have been working with BM3 to make some changes to the ROM to allow for the EWG delete and some other things. They said everything should be live so I am just waiting for my ROM to be updated now. I have my own tune built I did myself so I will try and go through that step by step soon to give you all an idea on how to tune your own car. It's actually pretty easy!

Manifold is done and in the car, just waiting on some 3" piping and elbows to finish the downpipe. Car runs but I haven't driven it yet but the turbo spools like crazy now with the new manifold. Video soon, pipes come in next Wed so it will probably be next Friday before I can finish up and post the vid.
