Lyle Lovett: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- For all of Lyle Lovett's considerable artistic gifts - a distinctive voice, easygoing charisma, rare talent for wordplay - his greatest attribute may be the way he radiates infectious calm. He's a one-time tabloid fixture who writes wry, bittersweet songs of longing, but Lovett in person is like a vortex into which stress and drama disappear. That's especially true now that he's fulfilled his obligations to his longtime record label: Lovett not only showed up at NPR Music's offices without an entourage, but also booked his Tiny Desk Concert himself, emailing us out of the blue to express his interest. (Our reply: "We would only agree to have you perform a Tiny Desk Concert if it's under any conceivable circumstance.")
So it's appropriate that Lovett would open this performance at the NPR Music offices by performing "Cowboy Man," the first track on his 1986 debut: He may be a music-industry veteran, but in many ways, he's starting over. With a fresh-faced accompanist in fiddler and backup singer Luke Bulla, Lovett gives a loose, engaging performance that feels like both an introduction and a victory lap.
He follows "Cowboy Man" with two songs from 1989's Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, so this is no mere promotional appearance. With nothing in particular to promote - though he did put out an album of covers, Release Me, earlier in the year - Lovett seems motivated primarily by the sheer joy of playing his songs. His pleasure is infectious. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

What I love about Lyle Lovett is the fact that when he is in public, he is always well dressed, HIGHLY mannered and never acts like he is better than anyone else. TRULY humble and appreciative. Can't be a better gentleman than that!
There was a time when being a gentleman meant something. We have lost it.
He's always very generous with other musicians.
You absolutely nailed it. 100% correct!! Lyle is one heck of a class act. I love him so very much.
So spot on! He is such a lovely human as well as an incredible artist....I fell in love with his art years ago.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Rory Gallagher was the most humble man in the history of the music industry.
Once saw him in St David's Hall in Cardiff. Sadly there were only about 20 of us in the audience. He got everyone to take seats close to the stage and proceeded to give a wonderful intimate concert with requests included. Wonderful guy and have huge respect for him.
Soooo jealous!!
20 people? THAT IS BAD. WHAT'S WRONG WITH CARDIFF. That is Lyle Lovett. One of the best of the Nu(at the time) C&W performers.
I wish I had been there! Shout out to you and Lyle...
PS. I don't personally like C&W much! But when I first heard LL; well...
WOW how are wonderful was that ⁉️
So quite awhile ago I asked my wife what she wanted for her Bday. She said Lyle Lovett tickets. I thought "well this is going to suck" but that's what the lady wanted, he just wasn't my kind of music. To this day that was one of the best concert I have ever been to. From start to end it was totally awesome!
He always has had a great band! Plus, he's so disarming and down to earth. And, that voice! I'm so glad to hear he won you you over!!!!!
Timber, you have a wife with excellent taste for music. I've traveled all over the country to see Lyle and his Large Band. 10+ instruments to make up the large band, and of course you realize his wit, and hopefully danced wildly when they played "Church". I had the opportunity to see him at Carnegie Hall, with the Harlem Gospel Choir.
I had the same thing happen to me with an Eric Clapton concert in the late '80s....( won the tickets in a promotion and took my then-wife. Both of us not expecting much and, man, we're we wrong) However, as time has passed and age has refused to relent, I find Eric Clapton beginning to wane and Lyle Lovett beginning to wax in my personal listening preference
My husband took me to see Lyle play at Bass Hall in FTW TX on my birthday about 15 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the show but was a bit distracted because I kept waiting for Lyle to wish me a Happy Birthday from the stage! Because that's something my husband would have done, just not that time. 😏
I still considered myself a very fortunate wife and Lyle Lovett fan that night. I come back to this concert often to watch Lyle be Lyle. And that fiddle player....wow.
Not "your kind of music"?
After seeing Lyle Lovett recently, I’ve concluded that he plays concerts because he truly enjoys playing. Both Lyle and Luke are insanely talented people. We are lucky to have them. … and honestly listening to Mr. Lovett talk is just as enjoyable as his music.
I go to his shows for the commentary just as much as the awesome music!
First time I met Lyle, I had no idea who he was. I bought a pedal steel guitar from his band‘s pedal steel player. The second time I met him after a concert he gave at a tent festival in Germany. It started to rain in the middle of a ballad. The rain on the tent was louder than the music. Lyle stopped in the middle of the song and cracked a joke. Then he asked his audience if it was OK to turn up the volume a little bit. That was when I realized that his music wasn‘t as loud as with most other bands at the festival - and that it was so much more enjoyable, as you could actually appreciate the nuances and the quality of the music. When I talked to him after the show, he was worried about the rain incident and the audience not getting everything they came for. Wow. What an artist and true entertainer and nice person at that.
Coooooooooooool..................
You can tell Lyle is moved by the fiddle accompaniment on this one…I don’t know how you couldn’t be. 🎻
There is a great moment in the video when Lyle recognizes Luke's pure control over his craft. He does it with a subtle little smile as if to say "damn this kid can play!" during an impressive section of Luke's solo (11:00). Two musicians that embody what it means to be artists!
He doesn't mind sharing the credit, which is one reason he attracts such top-notch talent. With him, it's about the music - not about Lyle Lovett.
A lovely, great-souled artist.
Glad you made this comment - I was just listening to this, not watching, but I noted to look for this moment and it really is so beautiful
He does this right at the beginning also… cool!
Rarely does one encounter such a universally loved and respected entertainer as Lyle Lovett. It's virtually impossible to find anything but praises and admiration for this man, and rightly so.
I am not sure if the people of the USA realise what a beautiful distillation of music they have come to produce, but I for one am grateful that they have done so.
Many of us do and we are equally grateful.
I don’t consider myself a particularly patriotic American, but one of the things I love about my country is the amazing variety of music.
One of the most under-appreciated balladeers of our time.
Absolutely!
No words, the man is just pure.
Saw him with REK a few years back in Greensburg PA in a small intimate theater. One of the best times ever. Went by myself because nobody I knew was interested in going with me. Made me realize why I now go to concerts by myself.
Lyle Lovett...artist..all class
Hanging out with young people keeps you young, and gives the young little sips of a life well lived.
I'm 33. I didn't know much of his music growing up, but in my early 20's Lyle was the only artist that could serve as a bridge to country western. I resisted the whole genre, but he opened the door, and for that, I am grateful. Such a likable and talented man. Luke has mad skills too. Great concert!
there are people who are just too cool for the room and Lyle is one of them.
His music never gets old! Timeless!!
Lyle Lovett is a first class act and this is beautiful.
I've seen Lyle Lovett many times, but not nearly enough. He is an enveloping, welcoming, open performer, and is my kind of poet.
2 hours and 30 minutes of Lyle and his big band night before last. Wish I was still sitting there. No pretense, no ego. Just pure talent.
These 2 never fail to warm my heart, rewatch after rewatch after rewatch. ♥️
I'm very pleased to know I'm not the only one that loves the music of Lyle Lovett, but when last did you watch his favorite music!?
"Pretend like this is going well."
Lyle cracks me up.
Why????
@@@ronmercer7853-Have you been to a Lyle Lovett concert? Lyle talks a lot and tells stories between songs and always makes a connection with his audience. I've seen him 6 times now and twice with John Hiatt. Great story telling in song and between sets. What cracks me up? Lyles dry witty sense of humor and his graciousness. It's a lost art of talking to an audience and drawing them in and making them feel like they are in their living room.
Lyle Lovett combines playfulness with modesty and talent. What a combo that is. I was hoping for Farther Down the Line - but hey, I ain't complaining.
He is the greatest song writer of our generation and he also is just an incredible person
Everything Mr. Lovett touches turns to gold... His taste, and knack for surrounding himself with superb musicians are at the highest level- truly a impeccable performer!
I love this man. My favorite singer-songwriter of all time.
There are no words!.... Lyle is a Angel... Thank you for sharing your talent. It's a blessing.
I just love this type of country - just a guitar and a fiddle. A bit of that high lonesome sound always touches you like nothing else. Dang good stuff.
And Lyle is such a gracious gentleman talking up and showcasing Luke like that.
Lerner Langwej kk
Lyle is a card. Lyle is salt of the earth. Lyle is kind. Lyle sees life through my kind of lens.
He’s like that because he’s a musician. Not a star, a real musician, who understands the value of teamwork and encouraging his fellow players. It’s not difficult to spot those qualities, all of the best are exactly like that.
Lyle Lovett is one of the most unappreciated musicians in history I think he's an awesome song writer, guitarist and vocalist. And luke this is the first time hearing you but sounds great
WoRd.! I've always loved his style of writing.. he "forsakes the shortcut" he'll be having u glued to his wordsmith @$$ like he lived what he's singing & writing within.. unlike writers today making their jank money selling the same weak bubblegum.....
Love u lyle
The fact that he's so under-promoted by the machine gives me hope that he never sold his soul to satan.
He has a fan base from those early 3 records who have stuck with him. He is definitely admired by other musicians. I don't think he's hurting financially. His music gets used in films and tv. Plus, he acts some He was in the American version of the series THE BRIDGE.
@@patricecatanio901 I don't think I'd say he's underappreciated ... he can be the giant in any room he walks into if he chooses to be, which he doesn't.
Been a huge Lyle Lovett fan for 25+ years now. Met him several times in person, always a gracious gentleman. So happy to have stumbled across this tonight. Really enjoyed the tiny desk concert and Luke Bella and his fiddle. Lyle you only get better with age. 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️
"If you were to wake up" is a timeless and damn near perfect song.
I find that Lyle's songs tend to be either kind mainstream-fare, or they're amazingly unforgettable arrangements. I guess what I'm saying is that Lyle is like lightning in a bottle. He may not strike all the time, but, when he does, he delivers one hell of a punch.
This song has always haunted me. This sort of song is the reason a sad man holding guitar was invented.
"Farther Along" is the timeless s
tune he borrowed.
I wish I could "like" this more than once...
Tickled that so many in the comments are discovering Lyle for the first time. A musician friend introduced me to him over 20 years ago and he never fails to impress.
I'm only 22, but heard him here and there growing up. Definitely love his music. was so awesome seeing him life last year, he's an awesome guy, and great musician!
Lyle Lovett is the BEST. Best Tiny Desk concert imho. can't help but love him.
Good God, I didn’t think that I could love Lyle any more than I already did, but I was wrong. My love for him has just skyrocketed. He’s incredible, simply put. Gig ‘Em, Lyle!
Julia Roberts is a dum-dum.
Always and ever a fan of Mr. Lovett - have to say that Luke Bulla put s me in mind of Vassar Clements - and that is high praise.
I'd never listened to Lyle Lovette before about 8 years ago when my daughter turned me on to him singing "If I had a boat " . I loved him from that first song . In this charming little NPR concert he plays with Luke Bulla , who , like Lyle , is an outstanding , talented artist . They both make it sound so easy as they gently take you on that soft and lovely ride . Thanks guys for the delicious treat . I'm going to be looking for more stuff from Luke ; he's an amazing talent . So cool , so controlled , so smooth , so enjoyable . Thanks NPR for this amazing , intimate Tiny Desk concerts . A true gift . ( Support NPR , they are the realist around. George Lewis, Sr
Great song.
She's Already Made Up Her Mind is the song that hooked me back in the 90s.
Wow.
That’s the song my dad played for me which turned me on to Lyle Lovett… although it was “church” which ensured me being a lifelong Lovett fan
Luke should be a mega star.
The man is a musical treasure.
That fiddle guy, holy moly, beautiful.
These Tiny Deck concerts are such a find! All the best of the best in such a kicked back venue, available 24/7. Thanks CZcams and NPR... and to all the artists!
The incomparable Luke Bulla playing that fiddle. The first song is from Lyle's very first album (1986). Still one of my favorites and still good music today.
Lyle has the best attitude, love him, don't, he doesn't care!
Ah! Traditional AMERICAN Music expertly played and sung. What a concept!
I could watch this one all day. Brilliant duo.
just realized I also commented 2yrs ago on this, lol
Never gets old... one of my favorites has always been The Family Reserve... and of course "Creeps Like me" -- but also a beautiful cover of "Stand by Your Man" -- now, wait... I know you're thinking that's meant to be sung by a woman... but listen to the lyrics... third-person... :)
Sweetest fiddler I’ve heard in some time- A taste of Stephan Grappelli. Lyle is a Class Act. Great duo👍
Tammy Rogers of The Steel Drivers is an equally awesome fiddle player.
We've been listening to Lyle for years now. He has such a unique style and his music is so infectious and wonderful to listen to. Most of our friends have told us, "Lyle who?"...He's such a hidden treasure, but we've seen him a couple of times in Minnesota. His concerts are absoluely amazing if you ever get to one! We've never heard any one else like him.
There aren't words for me to describe this. It is just pure and straightforward awesome talent. Love it or should I say Lovett!!!
Not to diminish Lyle, but that is some classy fiddle.
Yep
+yesmissfrancon Luke Bulla
+yesmissfrancon Amen! Luke Bulla! Are these two great together or what? (That's NOT a question!)
+yesmissfrancon You're not hurting Lyle any. Brother is *tight* on that fiddle.
And really, major, MAJOR props to Lyle for giving him so much credit just before "Good Intentions."
Your comment does not diminish Lyle at all but rather speaks to his defining attribute, he understands surrounding one's self with the best talent you can find, even when they are better than you, you can reach your own full potential. No ego.
Lyle is so unique. Love his voice and his smooth style. WELL DONE!
Such a talented, self-styled, humble, authentic dude.
Can't believe its been nearly 3 decades but back in 1987 I would pick up Rolling Stone magazine to find out what concerts were coming to Chicago every month ( I was usually looking for U2, REM or Simple Minds)... I would see listings for Lyle Lovett & Leo Kottke on tour thinking "who are these guys they keep promoting, never heard of them before... weird"... local alternative station WXRT would play early Lovett songs and I was hooked... Lovett seemed so alternative to not only late 80s country, but late 80s ANYTHING. Lyle was a clearly masterful songwriter & artist with his big band and storytelling humorist sensibility. In 1989 friends were going to see Rickie Lee Jones but I hadn't really been a fan... when my friends asked me to join them I turned the ticket down... after weeks of asking me to join them my friend finally said "your guy Lyle Lovett is opening for Rickie"... well, that was all it took, a chance to see this brilliant new country folk jazz artist! But I then learned how beautiful and brilliant Rickie Lee Jones was and became a big fan of her as well... still seems like just the other day.
Lyle Lovett is great to see in concert... really engaging and funny, and of course the music is smooth as silk.
Just saw him live for the fourth time. I never get tired of his music, his humor, or his humility. He is Good People(tm).
I live across the street from Lyle‘s in-laws. My wife Gloria and I went to his first concert at the majestic theater in downtown San Antonio. I love the concert and his interaction with the crowd. Now, I can’t get enough Lyle Lovett music!! Art
Bloody love Lyle , Pontiac is an album worth checking out ....genius songwriter xx
Lyle Lovett. Luke Bulla. Two instruments, one voice. Result: Magic.
I've been to 2 Lyle Lovett concerts... and his large band...both were uplifting and sweet. Takin you to church. I will go to the great beyond happily, now.
The young bands on this series are playing for the sheer joy as well. Good for him for keeping that passion alive!
Lyle Lovett is a Texas treasure - and an American one.
Without question, the very BEST Tiny Desk Concert I have seen yet. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I agree wholeheartedly. This is the best TDC of all time!
Check out Wilco
Love this...And Luke is so damn articulate on that fiddle
2nd song makes my heart melt, especially the fiddle solo. Heavenly.
That solo had Lyle smilin' too.
It reminds me a lot of the song farther along

The hubs and I just attended a concert of his last night in Troutdale, Oregon . Even though it was raining all night and we got soaked, it was a great concert! Loved it!
Words cannot do justice to this. THIS is what music is all about.Wonderful.
Lyle Lovett goes to my church every Christmas and Easter and sings "Silent Night" in German.
Where? I'll fly in.
Trinity Klein Lutheran Church in Klein, Texas (north of Houston). He only comes down here every Christmas and Easter, but that's about it. He's probably in New York recording music most of the other times. He grew up in the Spring/Klein community and went to high school here as well
MrMr Onlytrickster he still lives in the area, always has.
achtung baby
He's my imaginary lover.
Nathaniel Rateliff the end of that one song had tears coming. Can't stop trying. Powerful. My fav new band. Best of tonight's new discoveries.
If you know how connected Lyle Lovett's career is with Guy Clark's, the vortex of calm comment at 7:10 ("Pretend like this is going well.") might remind you of a closing comment from Guy's show's: "Y'all have been real sweet about this whole thing."
I saw him once in concert in Vancouver BC and he was 2 minutes “late” and he apologized! He was amazing, he was charming and humble and it was one of the best concerts I ever attended. His professional approach and his humor was genuine and people just loved him.
Happy Birthday Lyle Lovett!...
Lyle is up there with Tom Waits and Lucinda Williams..... the mix of captivating and poetic lyricism and incredible sense of melody in one person is extremely rare. A brilliant performer; loved him since I saw him and his Large Band support Dire Straits at Cardiff in June '92.
He's way better than both of them. No disrespect to either.
I just got here after seeing Lucinda Williams Car Wheels On a Gravel Road and guess what... Tom Waits is favorite north american songwriter...
I’ve seen all three of them live, and I am a fan of all of them.
I've been watching this video for years, and I still just wanna sit with Lyle and a cup of coffee and a couple guitars.
Best fiddle I've heard in a long long time!
Luke Bulla
well spotted Deny !
Lyle is one of my very favorites. His music comes is from his heart. He is one of a kind and so handsome
I can listen to him all day!
Lyle’s voice is a gorgeous instrument to me. I love his music. I got to see him again at the Alberta Bair in Billings,MT with John Hiatt- another favorite of mine. I so love beautiful unique music. I absolutely love Tiny Desk - such a true pleasure. Thank you!
Second time I’ve seen this posting in as many months. Enjoying it even more the second time! Luke B on violin is a revelation: authentic, old-timey and contemporary at the same time. Amazing!
Classy gentlemen playing classy tunes. Well done!
They are both awesome and I never realized lyle lovett has such a sweet heart.
I absolutely love this man's music, lyrics and gentlemanly treatment of others.
Lyle is still great. A unique look, voice, talent. I lovett when he gets jazzy. And his accompanist is just brilliant!
Amazing perfomance - One ot favorite Lyle songs.
Lyle Lovett is an under-appreciated genius. I like his style, sense of humor & musicality. His fiddle player complements his singing perfectly.
Lyle is one of the torchbearers of pure country, and Luke must have Jason Carter as an influence because that fiddle playin' is smokin' hot (and that voice too)
Lyle Lovett is just an amazing singer! The only thing I hate, sometimes when I hear one of his songs; I just can't get it out of my head! He is so original........what a great talent!
Yes, a Lyle Lovett song stuck in your head, truly a trial, what a burden! :)))
Seventeen minutes with a master.
A real treat for my ears, Lyle rocks.
I'm sad I've missed out on hearing you till now. New fan here. Love that touch of country. And the fiddle player was top notch. Fan of his now to.
What a pleasure to listen to, as always! I love seeing Lyle live, listening to his music in the car, at home - whenever, wherever. If you aren't already a fan, all you have to do is to listen to him! ;-) He captivates you with his story telling and his jokes but most of all with that amazing (and often times sh**-eat'in) grin he ALWAYS seems to have on his face - just darling! My most favorite artist of all time!
Met Lyle last year at MagFest in Florida, got to hang with him for a little, heard of him from my uncle growing up here and there, one of the sweetest guys I've ever met, I'm only 22, but he didn't think I knew he was, down to earth, and just an awesome guy. Total sweetheart!
Can never get enough Lyle. Makes me turn it up every time!!!!
Lucky you - this is the best of this series.
This set also serves as a fine illustration of why Lyle is sometimes referred to as a "vortex of calm."
The amazing Lyle Lovett. These guys are awesome together!
Thank you NPR for the Tiny Desk Series, and this inspiring edition. Love that Mr. Lovett made his own arrangements to appear - odd as a concert in an office is / was - and you shared that story with us. Here's to some version of Tiny Desk Concerts in 2022.
the embodiment of pure joy...can't love him enough! Pleasure to have seen him so many times
Lip--------Stick was everywhere....one of the best lines anywhere..
I watch this periodically ..
Absolutely the best and an amazing fiddle player too…I could listen to this all day long.
Thank you Lyle Lovett
Love this man. Never fails to amaze me. Saw him in Lawrence, KS last night...melts my heart every time!
I met him on a flight to Houston and been a fan ever since. Nicest guy, very personable. We're lucky to be in his time.
Love these two, great music, Thanks for sharing.
Awesome, always loved this song cowboy man
Thank you NPR & Lyle Lovett!
I stumbled upon Lyle just recently and he has totally surprised me. I love his genuineness and how he speaks such wonderful words about Luke. What a great guy!
love lyle lovett, i played his 'big band' album to bits back in the day. good to have you back lyle!
