- In the ongoing Prime Minister series, Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dr. Subramanian Swamy remembers H D Deve gowda, who became the Prime Minister of India in 1996.
I saw Devegowda recently in a wedding in banglore...i was soo happy..to see a PM....he stood tall even at 80 clicked pics with the bride and groom...Touch wood may he have good health ..
Deve Gawda was our chief guest for the anniversary of our independence of Mauritius. He created a great impression when he visited the Apravashi Gath with his speech which was full of emotion. He spoke without paper.
I should add that he donated one million rupees for the Apravashi Ghat.

No hard work at all he has all along only wanted his family in all. And by sheer luck he was a PM and his son also lucky by lottery he became CM , his son can never become CM by winning majority in elections. And his son became CM because of foolish RG

The first time his true mentor in petty politics Ramachandra Hegde took the cm post even though he was at his poorest popularity
He would have become cm the second time too but fortunately people from around Karnataka flooded Bengaluru and flooded the cm’s chamber with slippers only then he let Gowda become cm

Dr. Swamy has excellent memory, broad intellectual capability and no greed for money. But he has one weakness like all of us. He likes his intellect and achievements to be pampered and inflated to get his favor, otherwise he may come after you. Asaduddin Owaisi knows this and openly exploits in debate. When he is getting in hot water intellectually, he will say "If Dr. Swamy was Finance Minister, India would be very different" and Dr. will melt down with Asaduddin Owaisi. But he is the Best of Harvard.
How I wish he was more inclusive of all minorities. And also took corrupt people within his party to court.....

Very good refresher for someone like me who grew up watching those events. The answer to Swamy’s unknown question, why Chandrashekar chose Ramakrishna Hegde to be the CM in 1983 elections ?...was because Hegde was the neutral brahmin candidate between Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities led by DeveGowda and Lingayat Bommai.
Ravi off course yes, brahmins have no scope in Indian politics they are minority in India and all brahmins will be out of India in coming few years.
Also Devegowda was instrumental in keeping the JP folk together and getting hegde elected thinking hegde would side with him next time when he vacate the seat. But Hegde sided with lingayats building his own vote bank. This created rift between gowda and hegde!
caste based politics is just a way to stir up emotions and get the votes. Tell me which CM or Minister from any caste has helped in any way any caste? Same with BJP as well. Hinduism is fine. It doesn't need to be saved by BJP. This is another vote bank trick, to take the focus away from real issues.

Whatever respect Devegowda earned he lost it due to family politics and hunger for power . His sons are corrupt and always looking for opportunities without any ethics . The bofors accused Sonia is their beat pal now just for power sake . They ruled without the blessing of the people . Moreover they are biased towards their constituency and castes . His son a CM of the state abused and threatened the north Karnataka and coastal Karnataka region of no benifits cos they didn’t vote for him . This is no working manner of a statesman. Such casteist and regionalist people don’t deserve the post of CM , its unfair to rest of tge state . He is pushing towards division of the state at this rate.

I'm inclined to agree with your facts. My comparison was more with Swamy's brand of politics. Despite his considerable intellect none in the right wing would like to have him as a colleague in government. The finance portfolio is currently handled by non-specialists. Compare this to H. D. Deve Gowda who got to the top most office in the land with his limited abilities and education.
James Sunder Raj most of the state gov finance is handled by non specialist too.. siddaramaih is lawyer but presented 8 times budget ..u can check other states too..90% they r not graduate in finance or economics..I don't know how they manage to do it...but this is fact
None of the politicians need to have any degree or qualification to hold any portfolio. The bureaucrats do the job for them- these angootha chaaps only read it and talk about it a little. Deve Gowda used his money to influence leaders at Delhi to get to accept him as PM. It was not any intellectual or moral abilities.

Most people commenting here have got it wrong. Devegowda did not bring his sons into politics. H.D.Revanna who was busy running his theater in Holenarsipura was Ramakrishna Hegde’s recommendation to defeat both father & son in 1994 elections. Devegowda contested at Ramanagara & Revanna at Holenarsipura. Imagine a first timer winning with a major lead, only because he had always been the working hand for his fathers elections. People voted for him easily. Kumara Swamy was busy distributing movies and later producing movies. Janata Dal leaders were looking for a sweep in 1996 MP elections. P.G.R.Sindhia suggested Kumaraswamy for Ramanagara MP seat. Janata Dala got 17 MP seats in 1996 elections. Devegowda is wrongly attributed to bringing his sons into politics.
