    ===============================
    My take on Survival Horror as a genre and how Dead Space fits into the genre.
    Note: I'm playing the game at 4k on a PC forcing 16x Anisotropic Filtering through the nVidia control panel if you're curious about the settings I use.

    Another way aiming is made more difficult is the choice between a vertical and horizontal cutting orientation on many guns. If you don't have a gun in the correct orientation, your shot may be extremely hard to make or have little to no impact, due to the limb-severing -> max damage mechanic.
    In defense of the game's combat, I think the dismemberment focused combat is the main mechanism by which the game conveys to the player the grizzly and ruthless nature of the necro-morphs. While the player's weapons are clumsy, they have a very heavy duty aesthetic. When I blow off an arm in dead space and an enemy just keeps coming, that conveys to me that the forces I am fighting do not feel pain or fear or anything except the relentless desire to 'get' me. Since the necro-morphs were originally humans, this is even more alarming: as you pointed out, scary things are scarier when they originate from humanity.
    I would also say the combat ads greatly to the game's re-playabilty. Games without combat like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs were fun and frightening the first time around, but now that I know all the sequences where I'll have to run like the dickens and that I'm safe from monsters for about 95% of the game, it would be a bit mundane to go back and waltz through most of the game. Since dead space presents the player with very frequent very credible threats, re-playing can be a MORE horrifying experience, since you know and fear exactly what kind of monstrosities await you. I've heard you and many others say they've played Dead Space upwards of 3 times, which is fairly uncommon for any game.

      LoL no, completely disagree. I'm waaaaaaay more of a Lovecraftian horror, the fear of the unknown, person over the fear of something we know.

      Also you should play Amnesia The Dark Descent, A Machine for Pigs is terrible and not even as close to terrifying as the original, and the original just got a hard mode where you have to spend your tinderboxes to save the game and there's no enemy music this time around, so you won't know the enemy is even there if not paying attention, and won't know if it's gone or even after you.

      At least in 2 you can switch difficulties for new game+, the first one saves are stuck on the difficulty they start with (iirc).

    My friend didn't even let me finish the game because after an hour playing it I haven't been frighten or scared once. I don't know, Dead Space isn't the kind of game that really makes me scared.

      @@dan78789 Dead Space? Yep, Amnesia instead I couldn't play for too long with headphones, there's waaaaaaay more depth to the ambient sounds using the fucking head phone hehehe.

      @@dan78789 I don't know, it's just not my type of game... Alan Wake managed to give me so much more discomforts while playing than Dead Space. I can't explain but I started to feel really depressed with Alan Wake.
