- Today We are in Mount Jerome cemetery Dublin. A superb Victorian Cemetery With Vaults and monuments Dedicated To The Rich and Famous.
Mount Jerome Cemetery & Crematorium (Irish: Reilig Chnocán Iaróm) is situated in Harold's Cross on the south side of Dublin, Ireland. Since its foundation in 1836, it has witnessed over 300,000 burials. Originally an exclusively Protestant cemetery, Roman Catholics have also been buried there since the 1920s.
The name of the cemetery comes from an estate established there by the Reverend Stephen Jerome, who in 1639 was vicar of St. Kevin's Parish. At that time, Harold's Cross was part of St. Kevin's Parish. In the latter half of the 17th century, the land passed into the ownership of the Earl of Meath, who in turn leased plots to prominent Dublin families. A house, Mount Jerome House, was constructed in one of these plots, and leased to John Keogh. In 1834, after an aborted attempt to set up a cemetery in the Phoenix Park, the General Cemetery Company of Dublin bought the Mount Jerome property, "for establishing a general cemetery in the neighbourhood of the city of Dublin".
The first official burial happened on the 19th of September 1836. The buried deceased were the infant twins of Matthew Pollock.
The cemetery initially started with a landmass of 26 acres and grew to a size of 48 acres in 1874.
In 1984, burial numbers were falling, thus the Cemetery was losing revenue and began to deteriorate. A crematorium was needed to regain revenue and deal with plant overgrowth on the estate.
The Funerary Chapel in the cemetery was the first Puginian Gothic church in Dublin. It was designed by William Atkins.
In 2000, Mount Jerome Cemetery established its own crematorium on the site.

Brilliant walk though. I love snooping in vaults and crypts . You seriously need a endoscopic camera. Thanks GV and Sue. 🐨🥰
We have one but it's not great need to upgrade
WOW...What a powerhouse of an episode, thanks for bringing us along! I wish the local stone masonry school would volunteer its students to tuck point some of these structures to ensure their continued well-being.
Hi Joe it would be a great idea. Thanks for watching and welcome if you are new here 👍
As part of a Historical Commission, we have been spraying and cleaning graves. D2 a biological cleans the stone. Some we gently remove lichen. I keep looking and trying to decide about cleaning. We are working to restore this cemetery to remember the founding father, and mother s of our community
Are they still burying in the area?
Take photo, D2, light spray, walk away. Come back in 30days repeat
@@marielailer4237 hi are you still part of the cleaning of this cemetery?
Wow! You two find more remains than ever I did on archaeological digs. I appreciate all the care and dignity you show to those who have passed. Cee from the little haunted cottage in ireland 💚💚💚🍀🍀🍀
What an exciting walk! The chain and skeleton. Thanks for taking us along.
Tiny houses are the big thing in New Zealand at the moment…some of those vaults would be around the same size. Imagine the cost of building one of those in todays times. Do you think some of those huge monuments were erected to show that the family had wealth…kind of a prestige type of thing. Appreciate you showing us around. Take care.
Bigger the better all about wealth and power even in death
Amazing coffins the details are superb 👍⚰️
What a great show, thank you GV find after find .....

Just fascinating. I have heard of people devising "rescue" bells for being buried alive, but that is the first time I have seen one!
An epic necropolis thank you for looking into the vaults .
Death is the one thing that we all have in common.
Just randomly stumbled across this amazing video..... I've been a taphophiliac since very early childhood... Absolutely beautiful footage ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Very cool. The entire cemetery walk was great. Looks like you’re still kind of warm there. Guess can’t expect much from caskets that old, but it is kind of sad it ends up that way one day. ❤
Very interesting and thanks for sharing.
This was a fantastic video. OMG this is so fascinating. So much to see at once. I saw that there are a lot of comments with names I don't recognize. That is great. You are growing 💗💗💗
Hi Sylvia and margo ❤️👋
This was spectacular in every respect - the light, the clouds, the masonry, the monuments, and your wonderful presentation style. What an experience. Thank you, GV.
Thank you shantibel
7:20 he's got the sun on his face, and the birds singing
Aww the Monument with the dog looking up to heaven!

Really a not of Esquires buried there and all those coffins that you could see. Great tour. And the chain to ring a bell.
I enjoyed this walkabout so much GV and Sue, that I didn't want it to end. Also puzzled with the bathtub stone, lol! Many thanks, Deb of Oz.

Great video GV, what a very beautiful and interesting cemetery.

You have such a wonderful voice and very good looking xx
Hi shelly thank you
Everything about the cemetery is beautiful ❤
WOW what a wonderful visit with you and all those history made in stone and with iron doors into vaults!! Thank you!
Hi sue welcome to the channel if you are new here. This was a lovely walk. The cemetery is amazing.
enjoyed the tour, stunning grave sites, here, eastern Canada, it's only the oldest graves that have headstones anymore, just plaques on the ground now, required by the cemeteries for easy mowing
Thank you. 👍
Excellent, GV.
Thank you very much night night xxxx
The term "dead ringer" was coined because of this technique used as way of alarming the grounds keeper of a premature burial.
A real dead ringer for love ha
Even tho it’s my bedtime I had to watch this first ❤
Lisa thanks for staying up with us ❤️
8:17 With the sun shining directly on the bones, the heat is higher and the humidity lower. This crypt must not give off strong odors despite appearances and the skeleton seems very well preserved and dry. The ideal would be to replace the bones in an ossuary so as not to expose them to the public in this ostentatious and disrespectful way.
Amazing Monuments and vaults..Great job GV ❤
Thanks Maureen
There is an old victorian story called the fall of the house of usher and the subject of fear of being buried alive was mentioned.
Excellent episode GV, Shared it in my FB group.
Thanks latrobe 👍
thanks for another great video!
WOW😮....what a cemetery. I so enjoyed your walk and sharing this video with us. I could turn a couple of years older walking it myself😅😅. I wish. God bless to you and Sue.❤😊❤😊

I should imagine no one would want to be buried while still alive.
It has happened back then. Taphophobia is the correct name
I subscribed to your channel yesterday and have watched several of your videos today. I have noticed a "buzzing" noise off and on in your videos. I'm an empath and feel someone is trying to communicate with you in their own way. I think you stir their spirit somehow.
Thanks for subscribing, yes if you watch some of my videos I get alot of evps. Spirit voices in them
Great find 💀
good stuff Cathal....🙌
Cheers mate
Brilliantly done . Frightened the cr"p out of me when I thought the skeleton moved but it was your shadow haha . Thank you for taking us along with you I wonder if the bell rings in the quiet of the night ? Really amazing footage .x
Caron I hope it didn't move lol I'd be worried. Thanks for watching
That's a neat design for a crypt.
Wow what a neat vault with the bell. Over time I wonder how many bells did ring back then of people that was buried alive.
If that bell was to ring with y'all standing there what would you do? 😂
😯that skull door! That's neat!
That almost looks like a bath tub lol. 😂 ❤ y'all thought so too.
Great video GV n Sue. ❤ a lot of amazing history here.
If that bell rang I would have had a viral video 😂
@@GraveVisitations 😆🤣 for sure!
There used to be a custom where a family would tie a string to the hand of a loved one before they were buried. The strip was attached to a bell beside the grave in case the loved one hadn't actually died, but buried alive. Every night, villagers would take turns keeping watch over the graveyard all night, just in case a bell would ring. That is where the term "Graveyard Shift" came from.
And now, the rest of the story.
The bells weren't there to alert someone to rescue the buried. They were so superstitious, the ringing bell was warning that the person buried WAS A VAMPIRE, and it needed to be destroyed.
People were just so stupid back then!
Saved by the bell is where the term came from 🔔
@@GraveVisitations
Well, not really. Because, if by chance that bell did ring, it was dug up and they beheaded the person in the coffin. Because, they believed vampires were real, and that person was a vampire. So, nobody was ever saved by that bell.
@@Nacho-Mamma you don't get dug up in a vault. It's not under soil. Plus not everyone was classed as vampires. That's just an urban legend
That is so awesome
Thank you
Hello there. It's wonderful to be Irish isn't it? I'm new to your site and I plan on coming more
Hi Donna thanks for subscribing
Another cemetery I REALLY REALLY have to visit.
Well worth the visit amazing victorian funerary monuments
I have not received a notification in it seems months. I came here and my subscription had been removed. Anyway, I'm back and doing some catching up. Love from Alabama, USA
Tricia welcome back and sorry to hear about this. CZcams it seems is acting up as usual 😕
I buried my first wife in that cemetary in 1929. Miss her so much..
Wow almighty all the vaults wow
Love ur vids ❤
Thanks Shawn
Who listens to bells ringing in cemetaries these days i hope she has her cell phone good cell service and do not drop the call either.
😂😂
It was common especially in Victorian days to have a bell or some sort of contact with the diseased as not a lot was known about comatose conditions which can mimic death so mostly well off people would pay for someone to check on the grave shortly after burial as a precaution .
Thanks John it all very interesting isn't it
It is sad to see open areas left to the elements. The angel a messenger of God to man a drape means sorrow
Wow when you zoomed in on the skeleton!
Crazy isn't it
@GraveVisitations yh I certainly wasn't expecting that! Love your vids! Warmest regards to you and Sue from Stuttgart, Germany 🇩🇪
Wow👍
Flaming heck bit spooky xxxx
I do enjoy watching your videos, and the history, have you thought about getting a drain camera so you an access these tombs without the difficulty you clearly have getting good shots inside?
Don't like drain cameras o
Picture quality not the same. I like using phone. I've gotten great footage in previous videos without it
@@GraveVisitations oh you most definitely have! I think you do amazing considering. No hate meant dude, just a suggestion ☺️
@@Unangelic73 none taken 👍😁
Nice these are awsome videos, you need a snake camera to get right in there
Thanks I have one but these vaults were open enough to see. 😁
I believe this kinda work is noble, remember I those that are forgotten. Each had a unique story. I also believe this content is extremely important for the datafication of everything. I believe the metaverse is going to huge and cemeteries will offer unique experiences with AR/VR. Imagine going to an individuals grave and being able to experience the world that person lived. To the best of our ability to recreate the past with all known data etc. They'll be like fully submissive movies. The future is going to be wild and we're fastly approaching that time.
Yes that is mind-blowing to think but very educational. I like your outlook
@@GraveVisitations I hope you're one of those folks that can work to make it happen. Good luck and keep up the great work! Thank you!
Big musalums at the time the stark reality of the difference between the rich and the poor at the time they are all Beautiful just the same
My god he is a chilling ❤Nicola
wonder would they still have keys for all the old doors
Good question Derek. I'd imagine all the family members are deceased now. They would have held the key
Guess Edward dycer was a veterinarian. Hmm
Hi friend! 👋😷
Where is Dublin?
Thanks!
I always wonder if someone is buried inside of the stone “bathtub” and casket shaped things that are high up on the vaults/monuments.
No they aren't 😁
I will since you’re on the subject of it, Bring up a story of a girl who is actually buried alive. Her name is Anna Hockwalt, her last name is German. Apparently she’s buried in Dayton Ohio here in the US I know exactly where Dayton is I’ve been there plenty of times as a kid. So how the story went from what I’m understanding, is that her brother was going to get married, and From what was said about her in the paper that was given, she was supposed to be attending her brothers funeral at around 6 o’clock Doesn’t say whether it was a.m. or p.m. but she was dressing for her nuptials then she headed into the kitchen. Than a few moments after that she was found in the chair leaning against the wall lifeless. After she was checked by the doctor, dr Jewett performed a check up on her, and it showed that she has excitable temperament, also she was nervous, and had sympathetic palpitations of the heart. So The doctor assumed that she was of course dead, however there were several ladies at the funeral home, who said that her ears were of the same complexion that she had when she was alive. Most times persons ears, or something else matches the way they look when they are alive. But when a person is dead ears typically look the same color as the dead body hers didn’t. So as soon as these lady said hey, you know to Anna‘s parents hey you know there’s something not right here so her parents, decided to Disinter her, upon arrival at the grave they disinterred her. Before they open the coffin, what they saw was a horrible site. That Anna was laying on her right side maybe her left side, and what was A very horrible site because she also when they found her, she pulled all of her hair out in clumps and her whole hand was covered in hair, they also mentioned when they saw her her fingers were bitten all the way down to the bone. And it was very very frightful. I read later articles, that her mouth was agape, and her eyes were wide and she was terrified I would assume so. The whole thing is weird to me because I think to myself why didn’t these women tell, her family before they placed her in the dirt? So basically what she supposedly as the doctor said she died from was basically, and anxiety attack. She was supposed to give a speech at her brothers wedding made her nervous, didn’t know what to say and it made her so nervous that she passed out. This is an anxiety attack, it didn’t kill her being buried alive killed her. And this Doctor Who does medical tests on people I don’t know how he would’ve noticed that she was still alive. I will bet you 100%, that this guy stopped his practice after this. So if you want you can do more reports on Anna, like I said she was from Dayton Ohio or she’s buried in Dayton Ohio I think she was born in Dayton as well but I’m not quite sure. But yeah it was pretty shocking.
Wow poor girl a terrible thing to happen to her she must have been terrified 😔💔 thanks for sharing this story. Hello from Ireland 👋🇮🇪
@@GraveVisitations Well you’re talking to a man who checked his ancestry who is 3% Irish and Scottish I hope that still counts, And I’m also 85% British and welsh and 12% Germanic European. But hello from the USA to Ireland. if you need to please do some more research on her. Anna’s last name is actually spelled Hachwalt it’s a German name and I swear I did not do Anna justice at all.
I also forgot to mention, and I meant to put this in to Anna‘s story. Back then do used to put like a mirror under your nose to see if there was puffs of air coming out and I guess it would show on the glass, that the air is being brought on the glass. And that’s one way they could tell that you were alive, the other thing was is they didn’t start doing embalming until the Civil War but of course her stories after the Civil War. And the other thing was is normally when a person dies the coroner or the medical examiner or the mortician, check the eyes because your eyes become stagnant when you die. And her eyes were the same as when she was alive, so I don’t know that was weird. But it was pretty sad for her because like I said she had tufts of hair pulled out of her head she was almost bald, and she bit her fingers all the way down to the bone, and from what else I heard about the story, is that she clog the lid so much she couldn’t even get out she was so frightened. So after events like this people started creating, these bells that stick up out of the ground and they tie a string or some kind of fine wire around your wrist. And if the person wasn’t dead that person would ring the bell so somebody could hear it, but if the person was actually dead then they were actually dead. But those bells alerted you to let you know that hey somebody’s down there please get them out. My wife however said something it was very interesting if there’s nobody around and somebody’s ringing that bell who can hear it?
