  • The gaming industry’s labour force has had a year of reckoning.
The video game industry is richer than the global movie and music industries combined. And it’s still growing.
But a series of public scandals in recent years have revealed poor working conditions for the people making the games, as well as a culture that discriminates against women and minorities.
Will calls for unionization in the industry take off? The newest episode of Start Here reveals what’s going on behind the gaming screen.

That lady from Feminist Frequency has a major problem - using questionable methods and sources to have her way.
I mean at first she was portrayed as the iron willed woman going up against a Male dominated industry. The minute she gets clap back - which is something you will *alway* get when you go around provoking people - she becomes a victim.
The UN even gave her an opportunity to present her case and guess what they said? "No, because she presented information from questionable sources."
In summary, the industry has a problem. But the way to fix it is not by provoking people and acting like a victim when there's clap back. There are far more constructive ways of doing so. E.g. criticizing by creating.
And also lost how the video went from talking about gaming to talking about women🤨🤦‍♂️

It's normal for many creative industries like film (I'm in) require lots of OT and most of the time without sleep for a week or more to meet deadline. Friends working on games only let you go home 3-4 hrs a day. But during crunch time you basically sleep in the office. I'm taking about top US companies. Many companies/co-workers in Asia even despise those who can't deal with stress and call them weak. A famous Japanese game company Square that makes Final Fantasy their ppls basically sleep in front of their computers.

She gets commenters like this on every video, but it's extra tragic when the topic is feminism.

Stick to insane work hours, microtransactions, marketing gimmicks, gaming as an entertainment enterprise, gaming universities, life after being a pro gamer and in game currencies. Al Jazeera dug into gamergate once without a complete view of it and now they're about to do it again.

Well I think it adresses more the economic aspect of the industry, but I understand your point. Do you have any suggestion, documentary (video, journal, paper, article) about that topic? We have ahead the Meta imersive proposals for the next generations, where the gaming industry seems to be aiming. Greetings!!!

A good follow up. How many young women profit from sexualizing gaming online and how does it undermine the dignity of women in general.
but specifically, how their behavior affects women in the workplace.

As I worked in this industry, I cannot say women are harrased or not because I would be biased. What I can tell you about their proportion in this industry is inverse to that men are in teaching industry. This means that there is a difference in capabilities between women and men. Given that this industry has a lot more effects of winner takes all, studios battle for quality workers such as artists and programmers than many other industries. A less capable artist could create a shader that in certain situation would significantly affect rendering performance of the game. This performance drop would be on every reviewer lips when your game is launched, and that could sink your game sales. A less capable programmer could bring crashes to the game that again would sink the sales. Therefore if you see less women or whites or certain nationalities in a studio is not a bias but a reflection of availability of the skillsets needed to make a game in people with these traits. Nobody cares who makes the game as long as it is good.

No wonder those overtly awful people have deservedly been shut out & never hired, ... yet somehow were undeservedly indulged & immorally subsdized while appeasing their own bias, discrimination, prejudice, & racism agenda, then committing violations that has intruded, imposed, & harmed innocent people. Please continue expose, confront, & ensure they are held accountable.
