  • CO2 Removal Potential and Self-cleaning Ability of TiO2-based Cationic Molecular Emulsion Surface Treatment on Concrete Pavements
Presented By: Rui Bai, Purdue University - West Lafayette
Description: This study investigates the impact of a TiO2-based surface treatment (Ti-IntroCME®) on the CO2 removal (CDR) potential and self-cleaning ability of concrete pavements. 18 concrete slabs were cast and cured for 28 days. Then, 6 slabs were treated with an application rate of 0.05 gal/yd2, 6 with 0.05 gal/yd2, and 6 were not treated (reference group). The assessment of CDR involved monitoring the evolution of the CO2 concentration within a sealed chamber system in the presence of each sample. Untreated samples’ results were used as the baseline. The self-cleaning ability was assessed using UNI 11259, based on colorimetric changes of dye under ultraviolet radiation. The findings indicate that Ti-IntroCME® application on concrete pavements leads to increased CDR. Besides, results showed that treated samples meet the thresholds to be considered a self-cleaning material, potentially providing long-lasting CDR ability due to the elimination of dirt which blocks surface-CO2 contact.
