I have been sober now for 20 months. The realisation that it is impossible for me to drink in moderation was the final piece of the puzzle of trying to sort out the train wreck that was my life. I tried so many ridiculous ways to justify trying to keep alcohol in my life.....no spirits.....only drink beer.....only on weekends......trust me it will never work!!!!! Once you can accept that fact, you are half way there, if I can do it , anyone can.my life is infinitely more manageable and happy without alcohol.my heartfelt best wishes to all who struggle, hang in there!👍👍👍❤❤❤

I drink beer every night. I always start the day telling myself that tonight i will go straight to bed. The night comes and I say to myself, ok man! just two beers tonight. I always end up drinking like 4-6 beers. I ruin my body and my mind but the worst enemy seems to be my low ambition in life. BUT! I will fix this someday, i must!

Keep getting new reasons not to, all the time! I've influenced my girlfriend and my house mate to give it up too which is unbelievable really. It's nonsense. Total bullshit and a waste of energy. I couldn't begin to tell you how much my life has changed for the better since stopping. Read Alan Carr's 'How to control Alcohol', that and 'Alcohol lied to me' they sealed the deal for me. I help run a FB sobriety support group of well over 30,000 members. Over the years I have seen and heard every possible twist and turn on moderation possible. Quit Lit and podcasts/videos are not my path, but I was obliged to watch this video after a member posted the link and I needed to make sure it didn't promote moderation in any fashion. (That title ....?) Well, it doesn't. Furthermore, this guy is not only quite entertaining, but every word he uttered is very accurate. I especially liked the part where he denounces his father's "Everything in moderation" maxim as complete horse***t, a sentiment I share. I laughed out loud. Five stars for this one.
    I'm impressed, Craig Beck. Godspeed.

I’ve been drinking for 5 and a half years since my divorce. Even though I “slowed down” to once a week, on Friday’s, I consume 8 25oz of Natty Daddies. Last year I was drinking straight vodka. Yeah...this drinking is not working out for me. I can’t make long term goals and feel more depressed for days after I drink. With each year that passes, that “magic in a bottle” effect dissipates and my recovery time is getting longer. I’ve had enough. In a week I’ll be craving it again. The worst part oddly enough is when I actually start “feeling better”...my mental acuity returns, my depression goes away, and I feel somewhat healthy and energetic again. I start getting creative yet can’t shut my mind off or relax. I know what to do...I just need to do it. In the long run, cravings is nothing compared to a real tragedy like liver cirrhosis.

Craig, I agree with you wholeheartedly on your views on drinking, except one thing . You mention the example of Heroin as something bad that one wouldn't use in moderation...but that's not true for many people who do use opiates, especially prescription painkillers, in the moderate sense. Basically, not everyone is put off by heroin or its analogues, so it may lead to the thinking of something like, "well, I take opiates occasionally, so using alcohol occasionally as well isn't too far off." I hope that makes sense.

I understand everything in moderation but for alcohol it can’t work because of the highly addiction side of alcohol. I’ve quit using your method and it has helped me and I’ve been sober for 4months now but I still feel like I’m missing out sometime even though I know it’s poison. I don’t think I will ever lose that “Missing out” feeling when partys/Xmas/holiday come round but I choose not to drink because I know deep down il end up drinking everyday again. (Just wish over time that missing out feeling will go) As most of the western world drink and me and the other non poison drinkers are always going to be on the outside of the party’s.

I came home one Friday night and found I only had three cans of Jim Beam mixers in the fridge when I usually consumed about seven or eight in one sitting. Trouble was, I was broke that week and couldn't go out and buy more to make up the usual amount.
So I drank the three........and it was a waste of my time. I got nothing out of it, and craved more. From that night until the day I quit, it was always drink seven or eight, or drink nothing.
Moderation just doesn't work for many people. It's a no man's land where you neither feel good because you're drunk, or feel good because you didn't drink at all.
The real answer is.......to just not be a drinker. 🚴💪😃

How many people even if they arnt problem drinkers can really say they can moderate their drinking ?

You are problably right., I've been trying to moderate for half a year now, and not quite successfully. Although I managed to cut my weekly intake from 35-40 to about 28-30 alcohol units per week. Partly because I started using an alcohol moderation app and recording every sip I take, but partly because drinking has not been that much fun any more. Still I am far from the official "recommended' weekly doses (16 in my country) - which was my goal. Sometimes I think I might be close to at least trying to quit completely, yet I find it difficult to imagine my life completely without alcohol, like not having a beer with pizza. Every other drink seems disgusting at that moment when you are thinking what should I order to drink with pizza:) By the way Craig, what are your thoughts about non-alcoholic beers and wines. Beer in particular in my situation. For a guy that cannot imagine his life without at least the taste of beer, Is it OK to replace beer with zero alcohol beer, at least as an interim measure?

You CAN moderate, but then you can’t enjoy your drinking (so what’s the point then?).

I've been sober 1 year, 3 months and 14 days. I can tell you, from experience, that moderation doesn't work. If you absolutely hate something and it's beaten you down so many times ask yourself this... Why would you want to moderate that anyway? Once you're completely done with it and absolutely want a total lifestyle change then you won't even want to moderate, you'll want it far away from you as possible

I don't drink anymore either but I think the reason is you convince yourself that it wasn't that bad and that the positive times make it worth it. On some level you forget just how bad things got.
