War hero, Marine, clean living Catholic man. Requiescat in Pace, and thank you.
Agreed. And unless you grew up in Brooklyn during the 1940s / 1950s then you really don't know what it was like to have been a Dodgers fan.
To me, aside from Jackie who would pass away a few months later, is Danny Friscella. He is the dark-haired guy to the left of Gary Gentry at 8:45. He was killed on Jan 1, 1977 in a dune buggy accident. The roads we travel and how unexpected life can end.
I was there with my friend Steven. I was 19 years old. It was a Thursday April 6,1972. The church was on
Avenue M & E. 28th St, in Brooklyn. The Church of Our Lady Help of Christians.
I was leaning on green Cadillac. This car was rented by Tom Seaver at Kennedy airport. Tom was wearing a dark blue suit and he was driving Sandy Koufax who was wearing a black suit. Seaver asked me how to get to the Belt Parkway going east. I gave him directions and took pictures of both him and Koufax. Howard Cosell was there filming a segment for the nightly news on WABC TV. Me and my friend were standing right next to him as he did his report. It was shown later that evening and I saw myself. I wish they had VCRS back then because I'm going to be 72 and I would have loved to have seen me with my friend and Cosell. I also saw Yogi Berra and his wife, Ken Boswell, Wayne Garrett, Bud Harrelson, Jerry Grote, Don Newcombe, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, Mayor Lindsey, and many many more.
Whitey Herzog, who was director of player development for the Mets at the time, was ordered to stay away from that funeral lest there would be any speculation that he would be named manager. He never forgave the Mets for that. I've always believed that had Hodges remained alive, the Mets never would have tanked the way they did in the late 70s.
@@jojogunn7077 But JoJo, You had already married Big GT so how can that be true.
So so sad….
is that pee wee reese talking to Jackie at the end?
It is indeed.
@@Brooklyn3955 Jackie himself would die six-and-a-half months later.
It's too bad they didn't have the complete service instead of just showing people entering and exiting the church. And why was there no audip?
Didn't see Murphy, Kiner, Nelson
They had to be there…I mean, I hope so at least, right?
The special commeity votes for the hall of fame soon, I hope Gil finally gets in, so his wife can see it she's past 90?
