My favorite Jack Black story is this:
Judith Love Cohen, who helped create the Abort-Guidance System which rescued the Apollo 13 astronauts, went to work on the day she was in labor. She took a printout of a problem she was working on to the hospital. She called her boss and said she finished the problem and gave birth to Jack Black.

what really hits different for me about this movie is not only Jack Black, but also how crazy talented these kids were. as a kid watching this, it really made me feel like I could do anything, and the nostalgia hits me even more so now. especially Kevin Clark who played Freddy, it's so sad that he's passed away now, but his talent forever remains engrained in this movie - as will everyone else's.

First, RIP Kevin Clark. He played Freddy and passed away in May of 2021 when he got hit by a car while riding his bike. But to bring the mood up…
    Fun facts:
    1. The guy who play Ned, Mike White, is the one who wrote the screenplay.
    2. This movie was actually written for Jack Black to be Dewey.
    3. The kids played all those instruments themselves.
    4. They had a 10 year reunion back in 2013 (it’s on CZcams) and Jack is planning on another reunion this year for the 20th anniversary of the movie.

    • @chelseawestfall1920
      @chelseawestfall1920 Před rokem +50

Not to mention in the DVD commentary, they say that Dewey was actually supposed to be the one who ran over the teacher and broke her leg.
Also, the kid who played the bigger roadie (Gabe, I think?) and the girl who played Marta (the blonde singer) are actually married now in real life 🤍
Joey Gaydos Jr., who played Zack was actually a prodigy because his dad is a famous musician and when they were doing the part where Jack Black teaches him how to play guitar, he was way too good, so they made him play it worse in order to create the illusion that he was actually learning and not already a beast at guitar lol

All the kids except Miranda Cosgrove were musicians, not actors. That's why they're so good - they're actually playing. I also read that Lawrence's "I'm not cool enough to be in the band" moment was something Lawrence's actor genuinely said to Jack Black during auditions, and it's why Black gave him the part.

Hmmm…where is the source for this? Genuinely curious bc Black isn’t listed as a producer on the film. It wouldn’t be his decision or part to give although I’m sure he may have had influence.
Casting decisions ultimately come down to the director and producers. Just because Black is the main star doesn’t make it his movie. Especially at that time in his career.
      Here’s the original quote:
“Early in filming, an insecure Robert Tsai approached director Richard Linklater and tried to talk him out of letting him be in the movie because he felt he wasn't right for the role. Linklater responded that it was his very insecurity that made him exactly right for the role, and kept him in.
Fittingly, Tsai's character, Lawrence, has a very similar conversation with Dewey Finn (Mr. S) about not feeling right for his role in the band.”
Richard Linklater is the director which means he made that decision. Just want to give credit where it’s deserved. He’s also been nominated for 5 Oscars.
      Hope that helps!

One thing I especially love about this film is how Dewey just wants everyone to feel good about who they are. Like, when Lawrence and Tamika open up to him about their insecurities, his response is literally just 'so what, who cares, you have talent, you're awesome', and when Billy wants to be the stylist instead of security, he just shrugs and goes 'okay' and lets the kid follow his passion. There's no overt preaching or moralising - he just leads by example, by accepting the kids as they are (even Summer) and not judging anybody. In that respect, he is a really good teacher, despite not being good at the actual theoretical parts of the job.

You absolutely nailed it at 19:11 when you talk about parents. I've been a guitar teacher for 25 years. I've had some of the most amazing students ever, but I've also had a lot of students that just weren't feeling it, and it was purely because their parents were pushing them into it. If it becomes apparent at an early stage that a child has no interest in a particular hobby, it's up to the parents to figure out what their interests are, and encourage them in the right direction.
Great reaction, dude. I'm 45 now and I first saw this movie in my late 20s. It's one of my all time faves and I've seen it a million times. Personally I think it's aimed at adults just as much as kids, especially us adults that are still kids at heart.

He was one of my biggest crushes and it’s so unfortunate what happened to him 😞 Thank you for appreciating this movie for what it is because I know it might be hard to relate to it as much as those of us who grew up with it, but I’m glad to see that it still put a smile on your face and you could feel how happy the kids got once they weee able to express themselves more freely. This movie (as stupid as it seems) means so much to me. I saw it for the first time when I was five when my parents were watching it. I obviously didn’t really understand what was going on or the raunchy jokes but I loved the premise and my parents had raised me on classic rock. As I got older I always came back to this movie and I’ve seen it hundreds of times. I can probably quote it backwards and forwards. The movie still gives me chills and It’s still my favorite. This movie (as a kid) made me feel like I was capable of anything I put my mind to, and led me on to listen to the music I listen to today and have the massive respect I have for rock in general. Thank you for giving it a watch. 🎸🎶

That scene where Robert Tsai (cant remember his character's name) said he wasnt cool enough for the band was actually added to the movie because he really went to Richard Linklater and said he wasn't cool enough to be in the movie. Linklater told him his insecurity about being in the movie was exactly why he was perfect for the role. ❤

The school head mistress is Joan Cusack, as in John’s sister. They are often in movies together, going back to 16 Candles even. Two of my favorites are the 80s classic Say Anything, which was John’s last role playing a teen. And Grosse Pointe Blank, a dark hit man comedy where she plays his assistant. Then, Jack Black and John Cusack played together in High Fidelity.

Dude, back in my day we had a young male gym teacher (who knew no french) teach our advanced french class (3rd year). This was more believable than you could imagine believe back in those days. He'd hang out with all the jocks and teenage girls who crushed on him while calling the class an open period to do whatever we wanted as long as we didn't leave the classroom or attract the VPs/Principal's attention. It was wayyyy out of hand back then. It was like a bad episode of Saved By the Bell but it was our life, unfortunately.

This movie was actually made specifically for jack black. And he says it’s the movie he is most proud of. Also the director really wanted a explain song in it so him and the whole cast begged Led Zeppelin to have one of their songs in the movie. Also he had a hand in all the songs and the song they ended up singing for the contest was written by a band he saw while working on the movie and he asked them if they could write a song for the movie and they wrote it in less than a day. Oh and the band is called the Mooney Suzuki
