    Jim Gordon as Jack the Ripper is definitely a better and more understandable plot twist than the Riddler being Hush instead of Thomas Elliot.

      Actually Riddler was Hush in the comics too, atleast the mastermind behind it. They made him the physical Hush in the movie too which if we are honest makes more sense than just a random doctor. It may not be perfectly accurate to the comics but in the short time frame of a 90 minute movie it was the better choice.

      Another way to look at it, left-handed is what he is, but the NUN'S thought being left -handed was wicked so they beat it out of him. Jack is who he truly is, Jim Gordon is the mask, which is why Jack's work is done with his left, the true dominant hand. This is similar to how batman is who Bruce truly is, and playboy Bruce Wayne is the mask.

      To be honest I didn't see that coming, I thought Jack the Ripper would've been the Joker. But it also makes sense given the legends that surround the Ripper, he had skill that only a doctor or surgeon would've known, and what better way to derail or cover his tracks then to be a police officer or the commissioner of police. It's actually surprising no one ever put forth the idea that the real Jack the Ripper could possibly have been a ship doctor or a surgeon in the Royal Navy (to explain why there was a gap between cases), an officer or someone high up in the police department (to easily derail an investigation, and once again explaining why there is a gap, being a cop or in the department meant he would've known when the heat died down, or he could easily have declared the cases unsolved) or the possibility that there was more then one

    Given the way he talks about wives and mothers, this is how I think Jack the Ripper came to be: His mother abandoned him in an orphanage run nuns who severely beat him every time he did something wrong, even something minor, his mind was further damaged by his civil war service, but what finally pushed him over the edge and created Jack was that he caught his wife cheating on him while in London, likely on their honeymoon. Yet he couldn't bring himself to kill her so he tortured her to both make an example of her and to ensure she'd stay quiet, and then unleashed his first reign of terror in London, before returning to Gotham where Jack remained dormant until the movie. I actually believe Sister Leslie was one of the nuns who Gordon was left with as a child, and she felt remorse for not intervening when the other nuns were punishing him.

    It actually makes sense to have Jim as Jack the Ripper, nobody knew who Jack actually was back then, he just got his name from a letter he sent to the police chief, many people speculate he could have been a barber or maybe even there could have been two Jack the Rippers, However I think Jack may have been a police officer and a barber, because who wouldn't want a shave? And he also knew how to cover his tracks, he seemed to think like a cop so much it's as if he knew everything they would do, like they would teach you when your in training to be an officer of the law.

    • @mageia6190
      @mageia6190 Před 6 lety +98

      It would be almost impossible for a civilian to have done it at the time, London streets were prowling with police officers, only people who wouldn't be suspected for walking around late at night were the officers themselves. Also people respected the authority, that's why most of the victims had almost no signs of struggle on them because they wouldn't have expected an officer to kill them the second they let their guard down.

    • @nickmartin5294

      Souns like a solid theory of Jack the Ripper being a police officer. Another theory I heard was that Jack may have been a soldier and surgeon because a lot of the victims were cut in places where they would bleed out in seconds or minutes and Jack was able to evade detection through military training in the army. But I suppose in this movie your theory and the one I heard covers all that with Jim Gordon being a soldier, doctor and police chief.

    You know, thinking about it having someone like Gordon be Jack the Ripper is actually brilliant. In the regular timeline Gordon's the working man. The honest man. The man of incorruptible virtue. Because of that we the audience automatically removed Gordon from the list of possible suspects because someone as upstanding as Gordon couldn't possibly be a killer.
    But that's just the thing: that's precisely how the most successful irl serial killers come across. They're not lunatics who where bright colors screaming how they're going to disembowel us all. Most of the time they come across as normal people who you would go out to get a beer with. They're charming and approachable and come across as good, upstanding citizens, when deep down they're really twisted, disturbed individuals. In fact, most serial killers get away with killing for so long PRECISELY because people can't believe they're a murderer. Charles Sobhraj managed to escape justice for years despite killing over twelve people because people who met him just thought he was "just so charming and couldn't possibly be the killer" and the cops almost had a chance to stop Jeffrey Dahmer mid-killing but didn't because he convinced them that everything was fine and he and his "friend" were just having a lover's spat. Only this time it's us. We the audience made the call that Gordon "couldn't possibly be the killer."
    On top of that, Gordon's condition makes sense. He is a man broken by war, the war that killed more Americans than every other war America has ever fought combined. He saw the worst of humanity laid bare again and again and again. And what outlet did he have? Nothing. The war was over. He was expected to just forget it all and to become "civilized" again. People didn't want to know about his pain or his suffering, they just wanted him to be a "good boy" again. This happens to soldiers IRL even in modern times, where they come back from deployment and are expected to reintegrate back into civilian life. So some soldiers bottle it in. They try and pretend like everything's alright and that nothings wrong. Except it isn't. And some veterans just eventually break down. And then they're ignored, because they're not a "good member of society" any more.
    What's so uncomfortable about Gordon as the Ripper is that he's realistic. You could believe that someone like Gordon could become the Ripper, and that's frightening. But the thing most people probably find the most uncomfortable, at least subconsciously? The movie blames us for this. We, the people, did this. We ignored the problems that people like Gordon have just so we could have a "normal" society and then we allowed him to get away with what he did because we assumed someone like him couldn't. Gordon is a monster that murders innocent people, but we as a society are what created him.

      Shuriken250 Yep.
      American Revolution was roughly 25,000 (most due to disease and starvation)
      War of 1812 was roughly 15,000
      Mexican American War was 13,283
      Spanish American War was 2,246
      Philippine American War was 4,196
      World War I was 116,516
      World War II was 405,399 (the second highest in terms of US casualties)
      Korean War was 36,574
      Vietnam War was 58,209
      War in Afghanistan is 2,216
      War in Iraq is 4,576
      And the American Civil War resulted in roughly 616,222 fatalities, although modern estimates say it was actually closer to one million.
      The big reason this number is so high was due in part to the scope of the war. Unlike subsequent wars, the Civil War was fought entirely on US soil, and the sheer area of land where the fighting took place was larger than any previous conflict.
      And unlike previous wars, the Civil War was the first “total war” fought by the US. Meaning it wasn’t just armies fighting in the field but civilian infrastructure and population centers were targeted as well, since those are the lifeblood of any army (food, manufacturing, transportation centers, etc.). This meant that the civilian deaths resulting from the Civil War were astronomical, as those who didn’t die outright from the burning and sacking of a city would often starve.
      On top of that, the military technology of the Civil War advanced by leaps and bounds. Rifled barrels became more common, meaning infantry weapons became far more accurate. This lead to more battlefield injuries, which in turn led to absolutely devastating outbreaks of disease in military camps on both sides.
      In short, the Civil War was pretty much hell for everyone involved.

    That laugh at the end as Gordon walks into the flames and they take him, it sounded way too much like the Joker for it to have been a coincidence. I wonder if it was a nod for a potential continuation of Gotham by Gaslight.
    Gordon survives the fire and lets his insanity take over at the sight of his face and proceeds to laugh maniacally (like in the Killing Joke) and eventually takes on a new persona as the Joker. He'll either still know the Batman's true identity as Bruce Wayne and keep the secret to give himself and Bruce a sense of anticipation and the Batman something to worry about, or he will forget Batman's identity as a sign of the birth of a new evil in Gotham. Either way, the Joker will know Batman had taken on three pupils (the incarnations of Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Tim Drake from the beginning of Gotham by Gaslight) and during the story there will be a 'death in the family' when the Joker kills Jason. It could either be by a classic crowbar beatdown, old fashioned Jack the Ripper-styled butchering or something worse. This continuation of Gotham by Gaslight could be a bit like Superman: Red Son, where they stuffed everything into the movie, so this way we'd potentially be able to get some form of Jason Todd's Red Hood

    • @normanlee6609
      @normanlee6609 Před 6 lety +23

      There was and still is a belief among a predominantly right-handed society that left-handed people are the misfits of society. In Latin the word "sinister" means "left" and "unlucky" or "evil". In French the word "gauche" means "left" and "awkward" or "clumsy". In English the word "left" comes from Anglo-Saxon word "lyfy" which means "weak". And the phrase "the left-hand path" is a reference towards those who believe or practice Black magic.

      jsutton0010 You see they had to change that because Jacob Parker was an original character so having him appear would make him an obvious suspect. They wanted to make a twist here so it had to be someone else. Plus it’s an adaptation there has to be changes and I think for the most part they work.

      jsutton0010 nothing wrong with changing source material. It's a different art form, and writers have every right to tell their own story. Besides, if you want to make a detective story taking place in Batman story and introduce a character who never was in the Batman mythos - come on mate, even 2 year old would figure out the identity of a killer in that case.
