In 2015 I ordered a new body in Candy Apple Red Metalflake together with seats and a hardtop from what was then East Coast Manx (now East Coast Buggies), who I am pretty sure made 'authenticated' Meyers Manx bodies, along with a host of really top-grade components from Flatland Engineering, including front and rear bars, with the aim of building a buggy which would replicate the one featured in the Phones4U TV adverts.
I bought in a reconditioned 1641 long block engine with an Engle Racing cam, added a lightened flywheel, new clutch, twin ICT Webers, a high capacity alloy sump and dressed it with chrome tinware, chrome alternator, stainless pushrod tubes, alloy rocker covers and stainless canon pipes.
Then the Buggy build began, driven on and assisted by my stepson; over the next couple of years the thing was put together with mainly stainless steel fasteners. Also put in a molded swb carpet set imported from the States. Adjustable front axle with disc brakes, new fuel tank, electric fuel pump. New tyres all round and two new wheels - 14's on the front, 15's at the back.
Finally MOT'd in 2021 and then I drove it... well, when you are in your 70th year, 6ft 2ins and 16 stone, ingress and egress are a bit of a challenge.... and driving it.... well, they aren't built for comfort are they?
So, I need to let go of my youth and my dreams...
