Gazzara plays Genesis - Play me my song
A selection of Genesis tracks for piano and chamber orchestr
“Francesco Gazzara ebbs and flows symphonically, reminiscent of early Genesis and Renaissance’s Annie Haslam style” (Dave Kennedy, Classic Rock Society).
It was november the 4th, 1969, when Genesis played their first ever concert as a semi-professional band, at the Brunel University, London, Middlesex. An historical and pivotal date, considering the future career of such a productive and succesful progressive rock act.
45 years later, in a rather simbolic date, a double orchestral album (digipack cd and gatefold vinyl formats on IRMA Records label) gets released, titled "Play Me My Song" (Gazzara Plays Genesis) and celebrating the famous group with a number of revisitations for piano and chamber orchestra arranged by italian pianist and composer Francesco Gazzara (GAZZARA, Hammond Express, The Piano Room).
Non only a piano recital, but a deep journey through oniric and cinematographic atmospheres , with a bit of english country thrown in the middle...

We Genesis lovers may owe everything to the very early Italian fans.
And possibly to the Italian groupies, if there were any.
This is magnificent.
I see quite a few negative comments but to my ears it's a very good interpretation from someone who is obviously a true lover of Genesis.
Looking for said comments but I can only find the well deserved praise
They belong to our world, the world of Genesis music and magic.
Holy mother of God!!! The heart-wrenching beauty! I had to stop after The Lamia.
Your interpretation is exquisite!! Cinema Show, oh, Chamber of 32 Doors, Lamia so beautiful. All of it is fantastic that I've heard so far. On to the next half. Thank you. Thank you so much for doing this I have to buy this! ❤❤❤
Wow, I've been a Genesis fan for almost 40 years. Never saw this album before. Well done!!!
Nor did I
Beautiful renderings from the original composers to those who are blessed to have such wonderful tastes to replicate such geneiusis!
I am speechless , hush hush hush , i am trying to say something , but i still am speechless , oh , got it got it , this is the ultimate translation of the best rock band into great pieces of classical music ,.On the top of the stairs there are thousands of people found themselves the summit of music at it;s best , congratulations , you'r all there and and we all deserve it . She's a lady , she is mine , oh brush your hair back and let me get to know your face, now now now now now .
Excellent ! I hope these masterpieces will be played forever in concert halls
how long have i lived without this?
I am a classical music junk, only love Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert etc. But this is very good, I also like the recordings period Genesis, with Steve Hackett.
I am exclusively a J. S. Bach fan. Of course, progressive rock and rock music are very different, but in my opinion, one can enjoy both classical and rock music. I often wonder, whether Bach would understand or enjoy jazz, progressive rock and, say Queen with Freddie Mercury.
The work of love you did on "Mad Man Moon" or "One for the Vine" eclipses the imperfections in - say - Firth of Fifth. In my youth I spent countless hours on my 16 rpm record player writing down Genesis scores. I assume that nowadays modern digital equipment makes the task less daunting, but you went the extra mile with arrangements full of sensibility. What you did here is extraordinary. Thank you for sharing it.
Wonderful comment. I also agree, your arrangements are uplifting, powerful and respectful of the Impressionistic nature of Genesis.
Firth of Fifth cannot possibly be perfect without Gabriel, Hackett and Banks. Moonlit Knights is performed insanely well IMO.
This is the best instrumental version of Genesis’ best songs. It’s soft and pleasant. Thank you!
Amazing album , every harmony is put into its clear perspective slowing sometimes the tempo to show every note’s beauty .Fantastic , it is like listening to genesis for the first time .
I love the interpretation of "Moonlit Knight" here. But I have to agree with many of the critics here referring to "Firth of Fifth." With a piece - in my opinion, at least - that is one of the finest works of music composed in our lifetime, and where millions of die-hard, loyal fans are able to recognize every single note - melodic and harmonic - you're doomed if it isn't right on. I do, however, appreciate so much that the effort to arrange and perform music like this is no easy task at all. I also love the approach to perform this in such a way as to give it a chamber music atmosphere. Very nice.
Totally agree. When first listening to Steve's solo on FoF here I was pretty sure that he couldn't be spot on, but he is. And I've listened to that solo thousands of time, sometime two or three times in a row.
Absolutely Exquisite. This should prove to Genesis fans as well as the members of the band that their music will live beyond time.
Amazing work, you managed to find a beautiful balance between respecting the original intentions of Tony Banks and your feelings and interpretation. Indeed these are not covers, they are interpretations. Chapeau !
The arrangements, orchestration and production are marvelous. This is a wonderful cover and tribute to rock's greatest band. You have captured so much nuance and magic that is Genesis. Bravo!
Amen
Rock's greatest band indeed; and so few seem willing to bring themselves to pipe up and say it!
@@uckbee Agreed. I think it is because Phil is so open comically that many misinterpret him as silly or cringe-worthy. It is a style thing (that currently is uncool), but I am sure over the long hall Genesis will be seen as one of the best ever.
@@rk41gator The Doors, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Eagles and Fleetwood Mac among many others can all lay claim to be greater although I grant you Genesis is in the top 10.
@@uckbee One of the greatest*, yes but certainly not "the greatest" . That's an absurd idea.
Bravo, Francesco Gazzara, for creating study/lounge music out of Genesis old stuff!
Been a Genesis fan ever since White mountain.... And this is wonderful!! Thank you!! 👍🎶🎵
An Ornella Vanoni italian cover of the track too
@@michelelaraia7358 Wow, Grazie!! Didn't know that existed. Wonderful version!
I absolutely love Ornella Vanoni's "L'Apputamento", the most beautiful love song!!! ♥️♥️♥️
@@bgbstrm2352 Claudio Rocchi, the Italian version songwriter, died in an australian town named Rome, Queensland state(QLD). Heart attack, cremated. In the prog scene, from Milan, also aired a radio show in Italy.
Beautiful job! 👏
I particularly appreciate your very accurate harmonic arrangements of these beautiful masterpieces. 🤗 Bravo maestro!

With a brilliant intro of The Musical Box and a bit of Ripples in the transition from Watcher of the Skies to Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE HOW GREAT THE MUSIC FROM GENESIS WAS!!!!!!!!
My 3 favorites: 'Chamber of 32 Doors', 'Mad Man Moon', 'Blood on the Rooftops'.
OUTCH! My soul trembles...
For those that perceive Genesis as a rather noisy rock band from back in a dim distant hairy period or maybe even a treacly eighties synth rock outfit..... this would be
a great way of cutting through the tag and demonstrating the true brilliance of their music.
Celestiale.
Lindo demais!! Bravo!! O arranjo pra Watcher of the Skies ficou sublime, lindo demais!!!
Same here. I began listening to them back in 1977. It's going to be a 50 years anniversary in a couple of years. This interpretation takes me back through the years and to the times when we were younger.
Oh my God, what an amazing piece of work you put out here! Thank you very much! I never realized just how hauntingly beautiful Watcher of the Skies actually was!
Its becoming my favorite on this rendition of Genesis music.
This is delightful.
tutta la vita genesis. all my life this music for every one on the world....
Splendid! Wow, awesome to listen to, and such great picks as well. Would loved to hear Ripples and More Fool Me and many others of course.
wow I love it, one of my favorite band GENESIS
Thank you. I'm enjoying this very much. Perfect for enjoying the melodies of these wonderful songs.
Hey, I gotta hand it to any musician who tries to replicate Banks compositions, and manages to get very close. These are 'covers' but also interpretations, very enjoyable to listen to as background music, quite different without Peter/Phil singing.
Thanks Al!!!!
Genesis, and other contemporary musicians, forms a subset of our generation's classical compositions.
This really shows what outstanding musicians these men were. Genesis melodies are exceptional, especially when presented in this manner. I love '7 Stones'.
Fantástico! Qué forma tan increíble de disfrutar de Genesis de nuevo.
That's exactly what I thought. Well said. Just wondrous to the ears and brain
oh my goodness.....thank you so much.
Horizons is from one of JS Bach's cantatas! The Genesis boys knew their classical music!
Magnificent !
All those memories ....
This is so awesome! Love the little details and quotes inbetween songs, I think I heard the end of Duchess blended into the end of The Lamia
Beautiful production and musicianship. Loved it. 🎉.
excellent! Allows one to experience the beauty and creativity of Genesis melodies.
Hank thank you for your precise opinion !!!
Beautiful
BEAUTIFUL!!!🎶🎵🎶🎵🙌🙌🙌🙌♥️
... love it sooooo much - thank you !!!!!! 😍
Maravilhoso!!!
Love it. INCREDIBLE
BRAVO 🎻🎹
Absolutely wonderful
The best and most beautiful tribute I have heard so far. A jewel for Genesis fans who appreciate academic music. Greetings from Venezuela (The pearl of South America).
i adore genesis and i iwsh to thnak you for the great way you [playgenesis amazing music / you are great hhank you so much
Excellent. Time Table is brilliant.
Excellent and beautiful!!! Great job!!! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Fantastic
simply beautiful

Genial cover.... extraordinario...

Reminds me of the band Renaissance
Stellar!
C'est merveilleux. C'est tellement beau.
Maravilloso!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this instrumental collection. It's well worth adding to 'my favourites'. So refreshing to listen to. Well done!

Just found the MP3 version on Amazon for $9. That’s a deal.
@@Zerpersande Thanks. That's definately going on my wish list!!
Lovely, I just ordered the two Genesis CDs. 😎👍
Brilliantly beautiful
Great job!!!
I don't really care for these covers and no one will EVER beat the original Genesis sound but I absolutely love the fact that Genesis music is covered by so many artists and tribute bands. The music of Genesis is astounding and deserves to be remembered as some of the finest music in the history of popular music. Genesis music is modern classical. Beautiful.
I never get tired of the original sound, it was groundbreaking then and unequaled today.. I guess transcribing for unplugged instruments is a way to make the music more palatable to aging ears and give a different perspective. But with few exceptions, much is lost, indeed, not the least being its original soul.

Plus the fact that the members of Genesis were in their early 20's when they wrote these tunes. I wish I could write music this good.
Vou usar pra dormir! Obrigado! Perfeito!

so geniously

THE LAMIA 😢😭🙌
Wonderful, many thanks for posting.
this is for me something as extraordinary as listening to Crimson jazz trio, you could just put this albums in high volume and everyone will be able to hear them, even for those who doesn't like prog rock, classical music always feel listeneable
Merci. Merci beaucoup.
great!!!
I am for sure, if you find the right people surround you to make a tour through Europe to start with, and just do this playlist there must be a crowd full of people who wants to listen to you when you perfom in theaters. So well done sir! And oooh the sweetness of the violin and the love of the piano keys, words cannot catch the depth of it all. Masterfull done.
Bravo!!!!
Good job, nice effort.
The more I listen to other musicians playing Genesis songs, the more I admire Tony Banks.
for playing it? because most of the genius of genesis was in gabriel, who'd had serious classical music training. the fact that genesis songs sound so great when transposed from rock to a more classical ouvre has probably much to do with this fact.
For COMPOSING it. Tony Banks, not Gabriel. The master, not the jester. The Maestro, not the puppet.
@@GraachAhimThe veneration and admiration should be enough for both of them: Banks the composer, Gabriel the magician.
Tony Banks - a master! And underrated...
IMHO it’s banks’s chords and hackett’s melodies that made them the Lennon and McCartney of prog.
Congratulations, amazing.
As orquestracões divinas do Genesis, Tony banks e Cia 🇧🇷🔯☮️🌈
Bella bellísima musica
Bellissima
Maravilhoso!!!!!!!!!!!
