I got myself a Fiskar X27 thanks to your recommendation. I can’t believe how light it feels. I did a quick chop on a couple of pieces of red oak, split and felt smooth while cutting. Will be giving it a good test soon. Thanks

Hot Springs, Ar population is a little over 38,000.
    Trees are everywhere.
Mostly Oak and many other hardwoods.
Tree serv. guys bring me more wood than I can keep up with.
I get $200 per face cord delivered. I get $10 for bundles.
This area is mostly retirement people.
I am also located within 5 miles of 2 very large campgrounds. 80 percent of people here have firepits.
I have been selling wood all Summer.
Last year I ran out of wood by Oct.
This year is different because of the purchase of an Eastonmade Axis last year. I can turn out a tremendous of wood now. I will easily get my money back and much more this year.
It's not easy work but approaching 70 I am probly in better shape than when I was fifty so there's that.
I have saved untold hrs. of labor due to the tried and true tips from Chris.
    Thanks Chris.

I grew up cutting firewood on Tejon Ranch in California, delivered to the Los Angeles area a semi load five days a week (70) cords of Oak, in the 80's sold for $250 a cord. Been out of the area since the 90's so not sure of price now. Just Googled average price for Oak in L.A. is $570 a cord. Great video!

    Really loved this discussion, Chris!
You are so right that there are many variables regarding what to charge. I've experimented with a number of things over the years. I landed on self serve bundle sales. When I was doing deliveries, I began to consider what my time was worth on an hourly basis if I could spend that time doing my other job versus drive time plus fuel for wood delivery. That made it no-brainer for me, but I realize everyone's situation is different.👍

I live in one of the biggest counties in Pennsylvania by land area, but our population is one of the lowest per square mile- 57,000ish. Because of a large timber industry and agricultural history Firewood is around $120 a full cord. Delivery is pretty much unheard of. Prices are going up slowly because kids of farmers are not becoming farmers.

I tried doing firewood for a little while when I was out of work with a (good) chainsaw, maul, and truck. I am competing with those who have a firewood processor for $300 per cord, but locals trust them and dont know me so I have to make my price lower to $275 if I want to sell any wood. In the end I could only make $15-$20 per hour profit after gas and what not, not including truck maintenence but supply and demand is really sporadic, not high supply like your area. But I could make $27 per hour consistently in a construction job which is much easier on the body.

Watching at 9pm after a long firewood day. Unloaded pine at 6:30am that i split into My truck yesterday. Was splitting and cutting and stacking in the rain yesterday . Delivered apple over 1 hr away. Cut and split firewood the rest of the day 8 hrs til dark like every good weather day. Hoping for a long freezing cold winter with a small amount of snow. Never had the problem of having firewood thats seasoned 12-20 months old. So much carryover from 2023. Thought id have enough for a new dumptrailer already but with the worst sales ever in 2024 of the past 5 yrs that ain't gonna happen before fall. Saw that gas was nearly the same price as diesel. Id love for it to go back to under $2/gallon like it did under trump. Gas prices and inflation and repairs are killing any possible profit. Everyone has less $ in this ridiculous inflationary economy. Hoping this winter is really cold otherwise im gonna be screwed with having literally tons of firewood left over again instead of being sold and burned. Cant even sell any slabwood either and theres 50 cords of it piled up and we make more everyday

I tell everyone it is better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it. Now this does not just apply to wood. For example. I was hit with Hurricane Irma. That was bad I lost all my frozen and refrigerator food. I thought I was going to die with out my A/C. Did not have running water because I am on a well. I live in a 2 bedroom 2 bath and I could easily do good with 3 to 5000 watt Gen but I did the research on all the Gens and for a few dollars more I could buy a 10,000 watt gen. Would I need that much ? No never but its there if I do and if it is running less it will work smoother. Means less stress on the Gen. I have about 2 years of food stocked up so I could if I had to live on the food I have in my house with out ever having to go to the store for at least 2 years. Again better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. I have not one but two fire pits one I used for cooking and making coffee while I was dealing with Hurricane Irma. The other pit I use to burn just to hang around and have a few drinks . The best food ever cooked was food cooked on an open fire.

I live in a small town in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 can drive 30 minutes to get to bigger cities and I charge $75 to deliver anything from a facecord or a full cord of wood.
I buy wood from a local tree company but it’s worth it as I don’t have a lot of space for trucks to come. In a little over 2 years I made enough money to buy a ultra and I love it!
People always post on marketplace for free wood in my area too and if I can go get it I do.
I sell camp wood like pine $120 per facecord or $30 a wheelbarrow full I think the best option for customers instead of buying bags for $10-20 at gas stations.
Mix hardwood $160 facecord I really don’t have space to separate all types.

Question, please Sir: my local electric company cut down two of my oak trees that were dead and impeding the electrical lines. They left 30 large rounds. I don’t have a wood splitter. Does it damage a chainsaw to lay the large rounds on their side and cut them in half? At that point I could use my splitting maul. The videos I make are often based on internet searches for information which is content that will be "evergreen" ...stuff that will get views and make money long after I am worm food. If I always did what individuals wanted most of my content would be one of three things....cutting, splitting or processing wood and nothing else...for me and my sanity and fun variety is the way I keep going each day.

We also have the 1# and 2# lowest priced power. And the 1# highest priced power in the state.
    .
Needless to say that part of the county, has way above average amount of trees, and has way above average wood heat.
But very little sales, as most do there own wood.
    .
And for reference, your northern brother county is 11.2 people per square mile.
    LOL just a bit lower..

Yes BUT...I am in the far south west corner of the county and the counties around us have good populations also that are pretty close to us...so it is actually much more than that as far as the population market to sell to.

If you store firewood properly can it get too "dry" if you store it 3+ years. I am ahead on firewood and may have more than 3 years cut and bucked.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  Před měsícem

Some kinds of wood will "over dry" and burn up very fast, but it will burn, even after many years. The better wood kinds will last for a very very long time and be fine....oak, beach, elm, locust, ossage orange and some others will last for decades....IF it is kept dry. It is an organic material so eventually it all will degrade/decompose but it will last longer than most think.

Our market is changing in middle TN, lots of new folks moving in and changing from a "mostly rural" area, to lots of subdivisions/neighborhoods. I charge:
Delivered only - $50 "truck stack" (10 cu ft), $100 "truck load" (3/4 rick), $10 bag of kindling.
There are still plenty of people that will sell ricks for $50 picked up around our area, but I'm not competing with them.
