    Loved the A/FX class. This is when one could really identify what model of car was running unlike today's Funny Cars, which I like, but the A/FX were simply extreme versions of what we could buy.

    To RJL681-
    How is it the 427 ford dominated a large portion of the Nascar circuit during the 60's and the Chevy 409 and 427 had no where near the durability of a 427 Ford FE engine? Furthermore the 428 SCJ recorded the fastest 1/4 time for a production car in 1968. How many times has Chevy won Lemans back in the golden days of racing? And how is it that the 351 Cleveland literally smoked every big block 427 CID + Chevy in pro stock?. Also the owner of accufab John Mohivitz is using a blown 281 CID (4.6-4 Valve) and running 5.88 in the quarter in a mustang bodied car essentially using a stock crank, block and heads with 42+ lbs of boost? One more thing the 427 SOHC made more power than the current LT1 SC Chevy naturally aspirated.

There's always going to be bashers from Ford and Chevy camps, but what I don't and will not stand for this stupid propaganda. And that's what this roadrunner or whatever his username is, he's a propaganda fool that can be corrected immediately. Thank you for your great take on Ford's 427 engine.

    DYNO DON NICHOLSON won so many FUNNY car races with his SOHC motor CHRYSLER & GM could'nt compete for years.Thats why NHRA banned PAT & WALT Austin from bringing out a FORD BOSS 429 ALCOHOL funny car. The rules use to be you had to run a production based motor that the big 3 sold in there production cars. NHRA Banned Pat & Walt because Fords Bore space is 4.90 But how can that be? Its a production based bore space. Same motor Bob Glidden used to win 5 world championships. AMAZING Rule makers

    • @randycoursey7230
      @randycoursey7230 Před 2 lety

      This clown doesn't even know that the 427 SOHC engine scrapped the timing chain and went with gear drive. If you don't know this basic information you're not going to know anything about Ford engines. The FE-427 was a beautifully designed engine That could go long distance or quarter mile when it came to racing. Carroll Shelby used the 427 in 66 when he swept Ferrari at Lemans 24 hours of racing!! They were used heavily in NASCAR at that time, Mario Andretti won the 1967 Daytona 500 driving a Holman Moody prepared 427. This was the only race Mario ever raced in when it comes to NASCAR. And of course they did very well in the drag race scene. They started splitting duty with the 427 SOHC. Both are historical great engines. But by the end of 1970 Ford pulled out of all Factory backed racing. Times were changing, you no longer could win on Sunday and sell on Monday as economy cars were coming into play and gas prices were rising. Oil companies went after those windfall profits while they ripped off Americans on the price of gasoline. I remember sitting in line for up to a half hour or more just waiting to fill up my gas tank. And you couldn't fill up on any day you wanted, you had to fill up according to the last number on your license plate. For instance if your license plate number ended in an even number you could purchase fuel on Monday but not Tuesday. Same with Wednesday and Thursday and all through the week. The irony is it was all a hoax for Winfield Profits.

    Do you know any history on the car ? is it a real AFX car? Im looking for a specific one that at one time Jim Long owned. It was bought out of Garden City Mi. The vin was a aluminum tag riveted onto the drivers door that said AFX 00012. Roof and 1/4s were steel. fiberglass front end and deck lid, lexan windows except the windshield. it was glass. bumpers were plastic, no front inner wheel wells, aluminum door frames, came originally with 427 tunnel port. and the econoline van buckets .

    About 35 teaqrs back I knew an older mman that was involved with the P47 refit. They had planned to shorten the wingspan by several feet, change the canopy to a 360 degree type and the Allison was such a piece ofr crap they lookedat the Chrysler tests using the V16 engine. The test plane made three flights and they showed a much improved peerformance. But Chrysler had no one bought off in Congress so the military waited for the P51. Had the revised P47 made into comabt earlier,many livescon'td.

    If the FORD SOHC had been worthy of anything, it's design would be used in todays NHRA fuel cars. They, engines used in today's modern fuel cars, are all based on the Chrysler concept. 16 feet of timing chain flying around in the front case on Nitro Methane ( Ford SOHC) would have made for some spectacular engine explosions. Everybody in the area would have to wear a "Flak" jacket.

    • @randycoursey7230
      @randycoursey7230 Před 2 lety +1

      First off the timing chain on the 427 SOHC was 6 ft long. Second they went to a gear drive combination genius. Third, top fuel dragster in the '60s and other drag racers who raced a/fx competition all agree that Ford's 427 was a fantastic engine. It was the first engine to reach 200 mph in the quarter mile. The problem with the engine was it never reached its full potential because Ford ended all racing operations by 1970. So there was no new development on it. As times changed more horsepower was necessary to compete. Chrysler kept developing the 426, so it ended up in top fuel. John Force and others would eventually power his cars with Ford power plants for Funny Car drag racing. The engine was called THE BOSS 9. John Force won several championships with this engine. Then several years ago Ford dropped out of funny car drag racing. I suggest you do some research and look for facts, and quit spreading propaganda and stupidity.

    Chrysler bought the Hemi patents sometime in the thirties...they even used them to power a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt..it flew at over 505mph at 30,000feet. If our military would have pushed them into service the war would have been over in 43 and thousands and thousands of lives would have been saved. Instead they held out for the P-51 which we didn't even have an engine for..until RollsRoyce licensed Studebaker to build the RR Merlin engine in the US... and Studebaker was the only one qualified

    con't...had this refitted P 47 made it into service as a bomber escort over the skies of Germany..many lives may have been saved and the war could have ended sooner. Ford had the same thing happen with their V12 GAA..no one bought off in congress and their engine never made it into an airplane. But the V8 version made it into a tank and it was awesome. The Allisons were junk and always were. They wouldn't last 15 seconds in pull tractors today let alone 70 years ago. I know what I Know .

Where were the 409s at Daytona-Talladega-Charlotte-Riverside ? Fords stomped 409s so bad General Motors decided to quit racing altogether & declared a racing ban on all GM products . Studebaker/Packard were not affiliated until after WW II . Studebaker had nothing to do with the manufacture of the Packard Merlin V-1650. Also contrary to what you think Allison engines were supercharged ( gear driven single stage ) some P38's in Europe were turbosupercharged , a highly reliable easily maintained tough aircraft engine that could stay with a Packard Merlin at 10,000 feet or below the only advantage the merlin had was the 2 stage 2 speed supercharger at altitude.

    republic P47 that reached 505 mph, that aircraft was the XP-47J powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800- 57 (C) equipped with a GE CH-5 Turbosupercharger in 1943. The V16 inline Chryslers dimensions were considered to large (twice the dimensions) for an inline engine when they could get the same or better performance from a V12 and that was pretty much the end of the IV-2220-11. and those are the facts!

    The 427 FE engine had an option for three different rods. The LeMans polished "H" beam style, the cast steel, and a Nascar version. Our 247 High Riser had the polished lemans stlye rods.The low riser versions were used in MK4's and "J" cars with Weber carburation. The Ford 427 SOHC was a total failure, and was based on the WW2 GAA tank engine. It was hastily designed and was in use for just several years and was gone. It did not compare to the Big Mopars...never did..and never will.

    The SOHC engine was hastily designed and produced. It did not last as several versions were made. It was based on the Ford GAA tank engine from WW2. It looked good but it never proved itself to be worthy of production. I was gone after just a few short years. The 427 LeMans side oiler ran @7000 rpm around the clock and was a much better low riser design. It was also gone in just a few years.

Hastily designed and based on a WW2 Tank engine( look up the Ford GAA) they weren't worth the time to build. Ya can't spin chain that fast without a disaster in the making. A 427 cross bolt block was strong, and proven,but the head design was horrible. We all held our breath and crossed our fingers, but it was a flop.

      They ditched the 6-ft timing chain, it was not near as long as you have quoted. They replaced it with a gear drive genius. You are disqualified, you know nothing about Ford and their engines. And you're good at ignoring how they dominated the '60s pretty much worldwide. Now the 427 Corvette may have won One race against the AC cobras, but the Cobras won all the championships, they are the most replicated car and have been for years. When people think about road racing in the '60s they think of the AC Cobra, they don't think about the Corvette. Unless you're talking about the few drivers that use them in drag racing. They were called shake and bake for a reason. And Chevrolet finally came up with a car comparable to the AC cobras, it was called the Cheetah. It never saw the glory of the Cobras, most people today don't even know what a Cheetah is or was. It was a poorly designed piece of junk that overheated when racing. The cockpit got so hot the drivers were forced to bail out. And that is the cheetah legacy.

    It doesn't take a genius to recognize cheap metals. And Ford leads the way in cheap materials. Their heads were so bad I won't even rebuild them. I buy Chinese aluminum heads complete off the internet and they are dam good quality. I won't build big power Ford blocks.I use Dart or World made in China. I don't want to but I will never let Ford hold a gun to my head again or GM or Chrysler. They screwed too many consumers and we all know it. If they all go tits up.who gives a shit?..PHD? Bullshit

    @godfugitive ..I used to think that was what happened but I doubt that it was. Ford certainly could do better but their management style even today sucks. As a result Ford can't win shit. Their cars all look like Toyotas because that is where their CEO came from. No..Ford hasn't got one product I'd buy. Their Mustang is a joke. Mopar leads the field and rightfully so.

    Ok then How come the 406 in 1962 and 1963 couldnt touch the dual quad 409?..How come the 390 couldnt get past the 327/350 horse L-79? How come the Z/28 camaro took Championship wins over the Boss 302 Mustang in the 5 liter transam racing divisions? How was the 427 ZL-1 corvette able to beat the 427 Cobra? How come in 1961 Dyno Don Nicholson beat the the 390 Ford in the up hill race on Pike's Peak running a stock single 4barrel 409 in a '61 Impala SS? The 409 ate Fords all the way around.

      If you look at the 60s, the Golden era of racing it's easy to see Ford dominated worldwide, not just in the United States. The naysayers here don't want to hear the truth, and most likely they're not old enough to know the truth. I grew up in the sixties, I lived three miles from Irwindale Raceway Park in Baldwin Park California. I watched all makes of cars in all classes of racing there when it comes to drag racing. Ford powered cars won most of the races. These clowns don't like facts. If you look at historical race cars FORD is at the very top with the Ford GT40, the AC Cobras, and Mustangs. And that's a fact, not propaganda.

    Failure???...worse than that...I'd call it an embarassment ...it's gone and has been for 40 years... the Mopar Hemi on the other hand...never changed one bit...and the 428 was the cheap shit version of a 390 on steroids..there were several rod choices available but most 428 lead sleds had the standard "I" beam rod...Ford has given a totally new meaning to the word..."Cheap"....and "Last place"...now..go rub yur nose in that...and polish yur "Kia"

    @Speedysteve3 ..Ford never did anything in super stock with the cammer engine..Mopar hemis dominated SS..Ronnie Sox, I don't believe, was ever beat by anything but another Mopar....and the run of the mill production 429 was nothing like the Nascar 429..not even close..FF (385 series engines, 385,429, 460 ) heads are mostly junk...good intake ports and pathetic exhaust ports held the 429/460 down so bad no one would use them. and they still won't...good aluminum heads now available...too late

    Back in the seventies and early eighties Nascar mechanics identified that Ford blocks were deficient in nickel content...which they were. The cylinder walls were breaking down quickly and massive amounts of compression was lost resulting in power loss.Ford had to correct this mess but by that time it was all over for them...and it has never returned. Final results shows Ford can't win anything in any type motorsports. They lose every weekend in Nascar, NHRA, SCORE..you name it... they suck!!!

  • @raginroadrunner
    @raginroadrunner Před 12 lety

    Actuallly Ford produced many blocks that had almost no nickel content and were trash right out of the mold. Many small block and FE heads were so soft the valve guides were gone in under 10,000 miles brand new. I had many of them. Ford talks big but doesn't deliver. So far, no one has got a FF 460 to run good...fair..but not a record setter.
