Can a homemade additive synth sound like a Cello?

  • For old time sake I was going to do the "sound like a real instrument" but there were a few people who took exception and said (correctly) that a synth is a real instrument. Anyway, this is a small demonstration of sound design on the additive synth. I make a Cello like sound, and far more easily than I have in the past.

    You need to emulate the scratchy quality of the bow dragging and releasing the string. Otherwise, pretty good and a nice little synth design.

      I am glad someone found this useful :) FM is in the same category I believe. You have more control directly over the harmonics, so you can pick and choose. It is a different way of thinking about sounds design, but still quite fun. Check out algorithm 32 (DX7/Volca FM) - it is close to the setup for an additive synth. You can get a lot of the same sounds as I show in my videos with this algorithm.
