Super Hunky! Penton Bros., Malcolm Smith, an' more...still haves th' autographs in th' original program folder, alongs wi' trail markers from all 6 days. Thanks for this rare bit o' history.
I was there in 1973 with a group of people doing the timing and scoring. All from Ann Arbor and the Univ of Michigan. Loved watching the East Germans compete against the West Germans. Have lots of excellent old photos. Great memories. Thanks for posting.
My old stomping grounds..... For months we would run into Al Ames as he scouted the route layout for days three and four. We clued him into some connecting routes, a few of which were used in the event. In my early twenties then, and I'll never forget it. Took 3 days off work to follow around. Still have the pictures in a scrapbook, and about thirty topographical maps of western Mass. and southern Vermont all marked up. A lot of those lesser known trails have fallen into disuse as the bikes and snowmobiles have gotten pretty expensive, and in some places development has intruded.
My club is hosting the 40th Anniversary of this event on August 24-25, 2013. If anyone would like to contribute some stories/memories/pictures of the original event, please visit the Pathfinders Motorcycle Club of CT website and use the Contact Us page. We'd love to hear from you!
Yeah, I was working at this event, scoring them off the start if they didn't get past the end marker in the required time. Amazing to see that big German (Herbert Schreck?) kicking his cold BMW over and over in the frigid Dalton morning, only to get it lit with about 5 seconds to go ... he carried the front wheel thru the entire entry shute ... amazing! (no penalty points)

happy memory , with my Gold and a trophy for a new team , the French trophy .... since France was a trophy winner 9 times...
