such an organic oldfashioned tone for a guy with such modern technical ability.
Well said!
Yesss u said it well
abnzg great combination indeed !
I just love that tone !!!!!
@@dwilliams2156 what he means i think is that modern guitarist tend to only focus on the technicality of guitar and shred... While "old" guitar tends to be more "melodic and bluesy"... but there is exception.
Even after all that, I still feel like he's one of those DBZ villains that has really only shown us 30% of his true power.
Patrick Horn this deserves more like
When i first heard him I though...wow he plays nice and easy. Then the scales came out and i realized he is way better than he leads on.
I believe this. His discipline is obvious. He ain't fooling me.
His power level is definitely over 9000
That technique tho... 3:55 ... unbelievable, sweeping, into tapping all the while he's changing the controls on the guitar
This guy is one of the most unique electric guitar players in our modern day and age. Nick has top notch phrasing, melody, vibrato and a killer technique. Not to mention he uses strats. Combine all that and you have one of the finest and most underrated players today.
Mesimarch Guthrie may need to watch his back
Not to be a dick or anything, but thise particular song sounded exactly like something Opeth would've made. Not that much unique about it. I still enjoyed it very much though.
Schecter
Patrick you’re kidding right? When has opeth ever been able to play guitar like this guy lol
I'd probably go listen to some more Opeth and then maybe just headbutt a wall for an extended period of time
His playing is next level but the writing is Supreme. He knows when to shred, when to make it sing, when to rock, when to whisper- there's a whole story inside of the songs. A whole range of emotions conveyed by nothing more than some strings on a piece of wood.
I was so mesmerised and captivated by his playing that I accidentally started clapping with everyone else at the end. Then I realised I am sitting in front of my computer.
3:00 you devil you sneaking srv licks in your completely unique style, I am most pleased
AZIARGROUS hahaha definitely
AZIARGROUS yeah those half steps. I heard it too. Also sounds like he's using jazz strings like Stevie did too.
Heard it too. Cheers
Exactly what I thought!
Damn, never thought someone would even come close to guthrie in terms of combinding musicality and oustanding technique, but Nick Johnston comes the closest imo, so great!
Also in appearance
Have to say that although NICK IS A GREAT PLAYER,Guthrie Govan is just so far ahead of the pack. Yes,Nick can REALLY play....which serves well to show how good GUTHRIE TRULY IS. Nick is a super nice guy and from where I live. Nothing at all but MAD RESPECT for him and all his accomplishments. Guthrie also has been in the game about 15 of 20 years longer than Nick. Glad both share their awesome skills with us mere mortals.
no.. alex hutchings is the closest one to guthrie.. nick is not a fusion player
@@andrewlaw5628 that's why he said "the closest", not "the same as guthrie". Smh
@@paulgilbert3139 No, we're talking about the skillsets here, not exactly the sound
3:57....lick of the century.
Agreed. That slide that he sneaks in there.. My god.
TASTY
I can do that slide part at the end, just need to work on the other 53 notes before that now! PROGRESS!
Mini sweep, some hammer on's, tap, another mini sweep at 17th fret, More hammer ons,tap again , slide, flicks the pick up to neck while descending the arpeggio and Final slide into the note ...VOILA ! there you have it !
*3 years later* fuck.
Love how he uses tremolo without term bar
Can you please explain how he does that?
MISTAKEwasMINE He just pushes tremolo bridge with his hand.
It all depends on the bridge setup.
and that my friend is called a floating trem
Agreed. This is vintage tremolo setup in a way that strings can be pulled about an 1 or 2 notes.
*I found out how Nick has such great muting*
his hair. keeps the other strings quiet when shredding.
the technique was taken from Jeff Loomis :)
Hair muting technique.
@@podmal Marty Friedman does it too.
Nick Johnston is an inspiring artist, this will be proved 30 in the next few years.
Total Opeth - Damnation-era chords in the first piece. Love Nick's musicality!
I finally get what soul food means... My soul is fed! Thanks Nick!
When he plays, its reminds me of a great artist with a paintbrush. So creative and moving and his fingers create so much expression and nuances. You can clearly see hes all about tone even though he shreds a lot. Very special player.
This is magnificent . WOW !! just fucking WOW . This guy is something else. Man, such complete control of the instrument, such emotion and musicianship. Very very special, for me this guy is up there with the great players of our time.
whalla that is one of the best songs ive heard play so raw... thanks nick, u made my emotions sing... :-F)
if i had that tone.. id never stop playing.. a million thumbs up!!! cheers nick!
2:36 - check out the subtle reach for the trem section of the guitar, a gentle lift or bump and that nice inflection, the seconds later, a downstroke of a chord is given even more drama by Nick switching pickups just for that downstroke! Unreal stuff. So glad I bought his latest album, the man is the creative genius.
possibly the most insane thing ive ever seen, he's such a vibe to see live too!
Nick is amazing, a so nice fine touch and a feeling when playing ... love his style and creativity ...
Tone for days, technical dominance, theory, musicality, melody and SOUL... Just a pleasure to listen and watch. A thank you to your parents who of course had you, and put up with the 8 hour a day wood-shedding. It paid off in spades!
He is not just a Guitarist...he is a real wizard
Most incredibly talented guitarist EVER !!! His compositions are equally amazing ! UNREAL .
He has a unique signature melody and phrasing
The timing of this guy is devilish.
In my wildest dreams I could play like this. This is so good.
amazing, after a long time, something this brilliant came up...
Beautiful, powerful and on point work done here sir. Great job Mr. Johnston.
just woke up my soul again , hello
wtf man , best player i ever saw and seen hundred of thousands
Wonderful playing I feel it in my soul
one of the coolest laid back and down to earth guys out there..and it shows in his music,,so soul full and heartfelt with every single note..and one of the cleanest players i have ever heard as for note clarity..any time i have company and i put nick on it is always the same reaction..hey who is this ..this is nice i like this...and about time he grew a beard
Nick johnston is the best. A ground breaker . a current day jeff beck or clapton.. he is teaching us about dynamics, tone, and technique
Absolutely amazing, Nick!
Awaking with this guy's music makes my day...
man...what a guitar legend!!! definitelly one of his best live versions for sure!
best skilled artist i've ever seen , stevie ray vaughan is a freakin guitar god , but this guy is so amazing , he jumped to first place in my top fav's
just his understanding of what he's playing , respect
ThermaL1102 i know right? You feel like he's communicating through the guitar, not just playin it
@@RudyAyoub Yo, it's Rudy
3:22 "who is that guy? " "Nick Jhonston" "who?" "Nick Jhonson"
Good observation ...Mr. Sharp eyes !!!!! 😃👍
@@svogender TY sir!
I didn't get it, where did it say that
Nick Thompson
💂Dick Wankson !
🙎 Mick Who?
💂 No , Willie Wanksteen
🙎 Ohh Yngwie Malmsteen 🙄! Huh🤔?!
I love that Travis Montgomery, another SAVAGE guitarist, is just chilling filming on a camcorder.l
brother of Guthrie govan
Nai! Seth govan, this is the son of Govan..
😂😂😂😂
Совсем не чего общего
Damn, i was about to post this. i guess i'm one year late. But i believe he is morphing into, not brother of.
Seriously though his playing is drastically different from Guthrie, and while I love his playing, I gotta say Guthrie has a far wider musical repertoire.
Thanks dunlop for always having the greatest artists
I love all of Nicks work.
Awesome, Travis Montgomery of Threat Signal right up front filming!
Nick's album Atomic Mind changed the way I hear and play music, such an incredible guitar player.
What I love about this guy is that he uses his technique musically, rather than use his music technically.
Well put.
This is art. Completely touched by this.
This is beyond extraordinary. ❤️❤️🔥🔥
Great sound, and it's all on his hands!! I love it.
Love those Duncan antiquity pickups. Killer eclectic style with a touch of jazz and blues.
One of the most inspirational players for a long time.
absolutely great!!!
So smoooth and full of energy at the same time
I LOVE THAT GUITAR !!! So much , i cry ;(
Without a doubt, the best guitar playing and tone I heard in 2017 !!!! And your playing with a track too, I wish I could see you with a live band !! Oh yeah and Nick, come back to Québec city ! We are not too far from the center of the Universe right ! :P
The man incorporates his hair into his tone in certain parts. Intentionally or not, that is an absolutely beautiful thing.
This performance is not human :)
Amazing!
This dude makes that guitar sing like nobody else can. Stunning.
Thanks for sharing!
I just realized Nick´s technique/details when playing, every little/sutile thing that makes like giving a little trem, or changing to neck pickup just for one chord. Such a talented guy
Waouh!!!....if only all the shredder(s), virtuosos of heavy, had this sound, this musicality, this sensitivity.
Love this interpretation of your song, in this contest..not easy.
Your sound is just amazing!!!
Mr Nick Johnston, you'r a master.
Nothing beats a stratocaster single coil neck pickup
My new guitar hero ^^. Your smooth play and touch is awesome.
One of the best practicioners out there at the moment, wtf!
Nick's guitar skills is definitely over 9000
Brilliant! I'm a fan now...
Smooth as butter playing....perfect execution ...
I cant stop of see this video!" Come on,,,, that tone is sick!!
Love the clenched fist and the 2 guys in the backround then that killer sustain 2:04 wicked player✊
just total amazing, to feel like that and the technique, rare to master feeling and technique like that

What a performance
Wonderful...
Amazing!!!
Superior legato technique and remarkable phrasing. I could listed to his playing all day.
Simply amazing.
That is the most unbelievable guitar tone I’ve ever heard. This guy is the REAL deal.
Could watch all day long
Practicing 8 hours a day for 15 years and you get the Nick Johnston. Awesome!
no way....believe me....NO WAY
Jesus, that beard ages him like 20 years, idk if I would have recognized him there!
He's making his final transformation into a guitar wizard
Cruz Avila Awesome comment!
Jesus indeed
@@MrDokek I think you meant "sage"
Você é incrível!
Fantastic chops but with so much feel and depth. Very moving player.
What a great performance👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😀
I love this
very nice music, and nice guitar. cool video. thanks!
Absolutely amazing. He plays like Guthrie and both of them are top notch players in the world.

You look so badass in that beard.

just great, man.he makes a diference with many others grates players too
Amazing playng!!!
Profoundly beautiful
What a killer beard! Oh and the playing's nice too!
Man, Nick you are too good.
your vision is so clear when you play ..its almost Godly
what an incredible taste
2:03 is the best emotions from Nick .. awesome dude.
Holy smokes! What a fantastic player!
His tone is fantastic!
Excellent!!!
The way his fingers flicks the pickup selector was so damn smooth!
Such beautiful organic tones...esp 4:36 onwards !!! I love that tone ! It helps play chord voicings and overtones and not be plasticy or too distorted to recognize those overtones. They infact sit beautifully on top of each other. But again, its great playing and technique that brings out such tones. I love how this guy approaches guitar playing. Its artistic, not too many notes for the fuck of it. Each song has a story to tell ..
velmi dobrý zážitek
Out of this world+
Balls out wicked good.
