    How strong and long of a password is recommended ? More than 16 characters?

    • @963seeker
      @963seeker Před 11 měsíci

      60+ is recommended. 16 characters is too short and sophisticated rainbow table attack with a strong a.i model can do a successful brute force attack.
      it also depends on the password structure, example below
      pwd: w@>/jJVIJ

    In both methods you have to click again to the folder after you've inputed the password in order to actually open that in finder and when you're done you have to manually delete that unzipped folder or eject the virtual disk and this is annoying if you are going to use that folder several times during a day. I do not want to keep doing this extra steps over and over again maybe even multiple times in the timespan of 1 hour. Inputing the passcode each time is already an annoying thing that I have to endure for the sake of security, but adding all these extra steps on top of that is just absolute garbage.
    Also I do not want that folder or file being deletable without a sysadmin authorization, so that nobody (who is not me) can delete it from the system, otherwise it would be tragic. Cause when I say "password protect" (like you written in the title) it doesn't just simply mean put a password wall in order to access that folder, but it actually means protecting the folder from any malicious user trying to mess with it, be it by trying to sneak into it, or damaging it, or deleting it. And none of the ways you've showed actually accounts for that possibility, both the zip file and the dmg file can be deleted with a simple drag and drop and trash empty that even a kid could do.
    So this is clearly not what I was looking for, but I guess it's not your fault.

    Why does literally every instructional on this topic call this "encrypting a folder"?!?
    This is NOT encrypting a folder, it's making an encrypted file copy or an encrypted disk image. That is NOT the same thing. Even remotely.
    They create encrypted archive COPIES of your files and folders. The originals remain unaffected, just as vulnerable, and file and folder operations are not available on encrypted archives, because even when decrypted, they are not actual folders, they're still just encrypted archives.
