Marcy’s got some serious issues with her reality. Seems like in every flashback she was absorbed with video games, her tabletop games, anything but her mundane existence. How much did her home life suck?
It’s possible that her parents are both workaholics. They just buy her all the stuff she’s into to sate the loneliness. And even judging from the clip when she ran away from home crying, her father did not sound empathetic, at all.
Probably wasn't the best. It doesn't help that she never found a proper outlet to really discuss her interests and express her feelings in a healthy way (that's one of the flaws the girls had in their friendship prior to the show, neither Anne or Sasha really cared much for Marcy's individual needs beyond the group).
As someone who used to have that exact same problem before, I can attest that bottling up your enthusiasm about topics no one around you wants to discuss can lead to some extreme detachment from reality (that's why it's so important for us to have an outlet for our inner dialogue). More than once I'd catch myself getting so into my fantasies that I would genuinely start to believe it was real for a second, which can be a little scary.

It's interesting how only the flashbacks does the city look gray and boring, but in season 3 the sky and buildings are colorful. Strangely, it only starts getting grayer after Anne and Marcy meet Sasha.
It could be that the writers' original intention was to make LA seem boring and mundane in comparison to Amphibia (it goes with Marcy being so desperate to detatch herself from her "boring" reality in favor of games), and only later on, when they got closer to season 3, did they decide to add some whimsy to it.
While I definitely think it was a decision for the better, it does make art direction of the older flashbacks clash with the rest of the show a bit.
@@DLxxx Hmm... interesting observation. I do have to admit that Los Angeles does look very gray sometimes. I do think that it might clash a bit with the art style, but that is probably also to make it seem boring.
It could reflect that Anne's friendship with Marcy and Sasha was getting toxic, to the point where it messed with her "world". Amphibia was where they could work through the problems with their friendship. And when Anne returned to a colorful LA, it reflects how (without Sasha and Marcy) she could further find herself again

Interesting that Sasha said, “come hang out with your friends, who love you,” when she was talking Anne out of getting home. I feel like she’s projecting about her parents, they might not have a good relationship. Plus, when Anne writes them letters, she’s addressing Sasha’s parents individually. They’re probably divorced and Sasha just ain’t having a good time with it
Good observation! It's not immediately clear, but you can _absolutely_ read that line as Sasha not having a high opinion of family home life in general (though it's also implied she lived a pretty cush life, being wealthy enough to have big house parties on the regular). Likely because her parents divorce caused her to not place much value on blood relations, especially compared to friendship.
It wouldn't surprise me if Grime was the first stable father figure she had in her life (in the sense that he had a stronger presence and interest in the lessons she had to learn). If nothing else, they became just as much family to eachother as Anne and Sprig did.

the fact that just now we are realizing how much they left marcy out of everything. Marcy probably stuck around with them because she didn't have anyone else, even despite the fact that they barely included her at all
Yea, kinda like how they didnt make anne exactly a "saint" aswell despite being a pushover around sasha, and the two relate to each other more than with marcy being constantly being left out, 3 of them have toxic traits that each contribute to. Sasha is controlling and manipulative, Marcy is selfish and unable to feel empathy for others, Anne is pretty dismissive and has anger issues.

And with Sasha initially being such a protective person with her friend group but becoming more manipulative over time, I can imagine the turbulence from a divorce could make the desire for control in her life take over her friendship
Yeah, especially when you look at her reason for pushing Anne to meet up with Marcy. Sasha's logic was that she should hang out with them because they love her, implying she thinks the love she and Marcy offers is stronger than that of Anne's parents. This is almost certainly her projecting her issues onto Anne. It has to be.
It's been firmly established since Reunion that Sasha's control issues stem from a misguided belief that she GENUINELY thinks she knows what's best for her and her friends at all times. For example, the reason she demanded that Anne put her sword down at Toad Tower was because she didn't want to compromise what she believed to be their best chance at getting home. In her mind, surely these frogs that Anne only knew for a few months, aren't more important than that, right?
This is the kind of thing that stems from a twisted sense of protection. Sasha was always the protector of their trio, that’s actually how they first became friends. But her resentment of her parents and home life (seeing them seperate while she was helplessly left to watch) led to her desiring more control so she'd never has to deal with that pain again. Thus, she grew to be more controlling over her friends in order to keep them close, but also keep them safe at the same time.

One interesting thing I've noticed is that, the "Anne stealing the box" flashback is the first time we see Marcy in the show, and because she has the same kind of "malicious" smile that Sasha has, you kinda assume that she's also a sort of bad influence on Anne at first, which kinda puts you right there with Sprig with suspecting Marcy at first. But then when you discover that she wanted for them to go to other worlds on purpose, then that smile starts to make a lot more sense.

Yep. Marcy also took advantage of Anne's nonexistent backbone to pressure her into doing irresponsible things (typically backed by Sasha). We can see that in the flashback at the start of All In, and of course, the flashback in True Colors.

i never watched Amphibia, only scenes on YT. But WOW people were right that Sasha had real character development. The last few scenes of Sasha forcing Anne to hang out seriously upset me and raised my alarms, because I used to have a friend like that in the past and LOATHED it. Kudos to Sasha for getting better.
Yeah, Sasha had a lot of control issues at the start of the series. Growing up, she developed her ego and self-worth around always being the one in charge, and acting as the "protecter" of her friends. But it became very misguided and toxic overtime (it didn't help that Marcy often encouraged it, and Anne didn't care enough to speak out against it).
In the end, they were all toxic to eachother back before the show, but Sasha was definitely the worst of the bunch. And seeing her get the incredible development she did was one of the most satisfying parts of the show!

@@SpencerUS Actually, what the OP was saying is that we get a flashback in season 3 of the shockwave that came after the girls opened the box. Technically it's not from the girls perspective, so you wouldn't neccessarily need to include it, but it would make for a smoother ending.

Honestly, looking back at these, i realize now it wasn’t just Marcy’s fault that the girls got lost in Amphibia, but Sasha’s fault too. She pressured Anne into stealing the box in the first place.

Marcy and sasha are the one who pressured Anne into stealing the box, as Anne is a pushover, sasha controlling behaviour might be because of her parents judging by the letters individually written and marcy was the first person to come up with the idea of calamity box as she fully read the book about it while sasha has no clue what the box even is, shes intentionally getting them all stuck in amphibia on purpose and knew what shes doing. I would say both sasha and marcy has faults, but mostly marcy's
@Elizabeth Geis I... I'm pretty sure Marcy knowing what the box does makes her infinitely more guilty than Sasha in this situation, lol. Sash NEVER would've tolerated any sort of plan that would hurt her or the well being of her friends (all of her extreme actions in season 1 were done in the name of getting the three of them back home, after all).
