This is so much better and upbeat than those recommended videos from ancient Bio Nobel Laureates.

While doing PhD, we are told whatever our supervisors like or do. After PhD every one is looking for curiosity. I worked on detailed statistical testing on my data and my supervisor was not familiar with that so he asked another professor who told him the same thing as I did. Eventually, we sent the article for publication and the reviewer was not familiar with the stats and he asked to mold the data in the old fashioned way of 1980's. The point is, every PhD is struggling to get a post doc and there has been quite a number of reports for discrimination and favoritism.

Yeah, We did what supervisor wants us to do. Ok that's fine, since they are seniors to us in that field and they have found the research gap for us. But my supervisor says everything in one sentence, he hesitate to convey the information clearly. If he had told that, this itself is the novelty in our project, I would have done much more, I would have spent my contingency in purchasing raw material and did more experiments. I would have done many more things. When I was talking with one another professor, I asked him, to excel in research do our research need to be novel, then he said, "no", "novelty should be there in every PhD project". Then it stroked my mind, ok, whatever I am doing, that is the novelty in my project. My guide ruined my research career deliberately it seems.

I have a lot of these skills. But my point is none of the PIs can analyse skills such as hard working and passionate unless you give them atleast a chance during an interview. How can you just use a CV and a cover letter to look for skills that they have mentioned in the video

This situation remains the same from the years you have said..hope to remain the same for ever.

exactly. It's so difficult to get invited for an interview, but the times I did get invited I also got the job. But honestly, I think most jobs are advertised because they have to be, even though the PI or Faculty already have someone specific in mind, so you have no chance and just wasted your time writing that application. One of the many flaws of academia

A post doc is a cheap labour. An obedient, pet dog.

    • @boredscientist5756

Not that cheap, I cost 6 figures... It really depends where you are doing your postdoc. In northern Europe, it pays really good (about 6k/mo). In Singapore or Switzerland you can even expect 100K+/yr.
