  • Zeiss SmartLife technology was a game changer when it launched. Now after fitting thousands of sets of SmartLife lenses, I give my long term review. I also tell you about why I tinted mine purple - and why you should too!
    We're also featuring the beautiful Eco Eyewear bio acetate frames and we're sure you'll enjoy the close up shots as the crystal colour combines perfectly with the lens tint.

    This is very interesting. I first looked into the Smartlifes back in December and around that time, if I'm not mistaken, you had little info here about them and had just visited (correct me if I'm wrong) a conference where you learned more about them and wanted to explore them further. They've been on my mind since around that time and I finally came back to see if anyone had any further videos talking about them, and you most certainly do. I think I need to look into fitting these.

    I tried almost all the color tints. And the purple and yellow are the only two that don't distort the colors of objects. The other tints slightly change the actual color of some things. And thats not cool to me. So purple and yellow are my favorite tints because they dont change objects colors. They actually enhance them, in my opinion. ✌️

    It is truly a "jungle" with all alternative lenses to choose from. Me living in Sweden having recently made an examination with my optician. I have choosen the PhotoFusion X with flash coating. I am though struggling in understanding which progressive alternatives there are considering the choices I have made (I must say Zeiss website is a bit confusing and not easy to follow).

    I recently purchased a set of frames with 20% purple lenses, just because I wanted something unusual. I couldn’t believe how quickly I became attached to them because of how much better everything looks through them. The frames are far from being my favorite, but the lenses have made them my most worn pair, by far. You described the effect of purple lenses PERFECTLY. Looks like I’m gonna have to give 50% purple a try now 😁

    • @portlandgoose4727
      @portlandgoose4727 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Also, the 20% tint option is amazing, since it’s just enough to noticeably change the hue of what you’re seeing, but is also light enough that the lenses are acceptable for me to wear in class or at my job.
      I’ll be strongly recommending anyone who is considering / on the fence about colored lenses to take a leap of faith and start with a 20%-ish purple. They look super cool, and the world looks so much more pleasing through them.

    Thanks for an interesting video. Can I ask you something? In terms of peripheral vision - how do these compare to the DriveSafe alternative? Is there a trade-off with SmartLife lenses?

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  Před 2 lety +5

      Good question but also hard to answer without being very technical. Single Vision they are about the same.
      With progressives (varifocals) if you were to compare in the distance, Drivesafe would be clearer further to the edge. However, we don't tend to deliberately look to the edge of our lenses for detail very often; we actually tend to glance in order to be aware of our surroundings.
      The SmartLife research confirmed this and actually discovered that we do this a lot more than previously thought - especially when holding a smartphone.
      So with SmartLife lenses, 'glancing' to the periphery and therefore transitioning between the different zones on the lens is easier and faster, so in that sense peripheral vision is improved.

    I've been wearing these Zeiss SmartLife lenses for 2 weeks now and the clarity looking through them is truly amazing.
    Especially in my varifocal prescription which you got spot on Rob.
    The purple tint is also really comfortable and soothing to look through and is a fantastic tint. Really makes everything new and fresh.
    I'm getting used to the spring hinge on the slate Eco eyewear frame (as you always generally advise against spring hinges).
    It's a really comfortable frame to wear, maybe not quite as comfortable as my blue Anglo American round frame which fit my face perfectly and snugly and feel like they would never fall off. I actually think the round Anglo glasses may become my go-to functional glasses.
    Anyway, great job and I love this total frame, lens, and tint combination!

    I disagree.
    Zeiss has probably the worst coatings on the market. Doubt? Drop a drop of water on them and compare it to any other reputable brand. Duravision is awful to live with according to every person I met who wears them.
    Smart lenses are a markup invention, it's not about people and their needs (any brand). This optimization you speak of only works when you're looking at your phone if it's coasted on your chest and even then you don't really need it. Showing the promotional video Zeiss made and giving us their sales speech is not a review, it's an ad by proxy.
    And seeing clearer at any other distance due to smart lenses is nonsense. But how else would you sell special custom modern lifestyle smart lenses that cost 3 times as much..
    Purple color is cold and so tense to look through for most people. Everyone I showed samples of tints prefers warmer tints like green and brown - everyone likes a bit more yellow, a bit more warm. You know what is clear white? Hospitals, offices and malls. You know what is green and yellow? Nature. I totally understand you have this preference but it's very rare (and for me - also weird). I would get it if you lived in Egypt, but for the cloudy and grey northern Europe? Come oon.
    Other than that, I enjoyed watching your other videos about frames and liked them (except of course your weird preference for Cartier - what are you - 70?), so keep up the good work.

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  Před rokem +4

      I don't know what to say, except I fundamentally disagree on all points.
      1) There are 3 types of Duravision - I'm talking about Platinum which we include as standard. I haven't even tried the lower Duravision types because I understand how important a good coating is, and I want everyone to have the best. I would agree that Hoya coatings are slightly better, but not significantly so.
      2) I attended the launch event of SL, and the technology was based on real data gathered by independent analysts performed on 100s of wearers. My review is based on my experience with 1000s of patients. I doubt anybody in the world has fitted more SmartLife lenses than me. Why would I do that if nobody can tell the difference?
      3) Every client I have fitted with Sweet Violet has agreed it's the best tint they ever tried.
      Cartier are a beautiful, young brand. You are the one who is outdated if you think they're for old people. I have clients as young as 18 ordering them.
      Finally, you used the word 'malls' so I am going to assume you are US based. Do you know that Zeiss lenses sold within the US aren't actually made by Zeiss?? That's why so many US clients order them from us. There is a big difference.

      1) then do a water drop comparison between DV Platinum and Crizal Sapphire. I dare you.
      2) did you fit the exact same prescription to the exact same customers on 2 pairs - one regular SV and one SL? I doubt that. Did these independent ecps compare them this way? You are relying on 'scientific' data provided by the lens producer which is a common mistake everywhere in the world.

      @@MrOsasco You want me to explain what prism is? To prove myself to you?
      I mean, sure... you could have selected a more complex topic though.
      Prism is used to correct muscle imbalances which result either in double vision or in more minor cases, asthenopic symptoms.
      It is introduced by modifying the prismatic centre to deviate the gaze of the eye.
