Warren Row EXCLUSIVE Nuclear Bunker MYSTERY LADDER

  • We have a peek around inside the former Nuclear Bunker called Warren Row. This was a former Regional Seats of Government HQ.
    We also discovered a strange room known locally as a "Lav" ;-)
    Many peace protesters spent countless days protesting here but did any see a glimpse inside like we managed to here? Very few photos exist of inside and certainly none of the RGHQ Nuclear Bunker.
    We live in hope that the owners of this site may see this video and allow a visit to film the bunker and mines for a final reveal of this place which has been shrouded in secrecy for so many years. Thats if they have a sense of humour when they see this video that is ;-)

    Around 7-8 years ago I used to visit that place regularly for maintenance work on behalf of the document storage company who rented it out. A Scottish chap called Jim effectively lived in that small house you found at the entrance. It's an absolute maze in there with many levels and rooms. If you explore the woods a little more you'll find a large brick structure with 2 large doors surrounded by what was a janky chain link fence, this is the vehicular access ramp into the bunker and it headed down into the ground for about 50m. At the bottom was another set of doors which lead into what was the mess room area. If I remember correctly the structure and the doors weren't in the best of condition and at the time could be opened. The wine company section the other side isn't nowhere near as large.
    There is another bunker not too far away on the Wargrave Rd Henley, this is a former WWII shadow factory, however it's still in use by the document storage company.

    We got into this place back in the late 80's. The main doors were locked but we were able to get in through the other bunker rear entrance ( someone ripped out the brick work ) and via the shaft nr the radio tower. There was remnants of machine equipment, toilets, canteen ( prices in old money) sleeping quarters and even a upper floor which you could climb out into sections that had not been bricked up. Everything was pretty much smashed up. Shame you couldn't get into the main tunnels, there would have been plenty to explore!

  • @johnmildenhall860
    @johnmildenhall860 Před 3 lety +1

    For me, this is a really interesting reminiscence. I entered several times in the late 1970s. At that time it was still the Regional Seat of Government RSG 62. There were two tunnel systems. One was lined as the concrete bunker, the second was bare chalk. The latter had an entrance grill I could squeeze through. It was then a scramble down a steep slope into te bare cave. This was quite large, and long. A side passage connected to the bunker system. This passage had an electric motor driving a two bladed cut down aircraft propeller as the air extraction for the bunker. I think this entrance grill area was excavated after the bunker was sold to form the modern folding door entrance next to the toilet.
    The air extraction passage allowed access to the main switch gear room, and from there into the whole bunker. The mess area and dormitories were still fully set up when I first visited, there was an accumulator room full of big glass batteries for the phones, and maps for operations laid out in the meeting room. All the lights and water systems were fully functional. There was a watchman living nearby who kept an eye on the place.
    The main entrance then was the one with the part open steel doors. The padlocked blast door behind is a new addition. The curved retaining wall above the entrance doors shielded a large air filtration rig. Air was drawn through this into the bunker by the extractor propeller and expelled through the grill in the bare cavern.
    The disused surface building by the old entrance was two generator rooms. This housed a larger 4 cylinder diesel, and a smaller emergency 3 cylinder unit. These could be cranked over on the starter motor at this time. The area behind the generator rooms (on the right looking towards the blast door) had a brick bunded oil storage tank.
    There was a slope shaft in the woods that lead down to the deepest part of the shelter. This had a pair of blast doors at the surface level.
    The shaft with the ladder lead into the toilet area, and was probably an escape shaft. This area seems to have been cleared as evident from your footage.
    The bunker was vandalised badly in the late 1970s, with a traveller encampment set up in the woods nearby. On one visit we heard the in the bunker, and saw the evidence that they had stripped out all the copper wiring and the generators. The entrances were then bricked up. I didn't visit after that.

    In the 1980s the site was up for sale being in a very dilapidated state and looking deserted. Back down the road around the sharpe corner and just off the road was a double steel door entrance with a tunnel running back and down in the woods. All gone now with no evidence it was ever there. Star Lane used to have a sign stating ‘No Military Vehicles’
    Also set back in woods was a raised concrete pedestal with slots presumable for air or defence purposes. What was clever was the top of the plinth was shaped with a sizeable tree atop.

      I explored down there with a couple of friends in the 1980s. The electricity could be turned on from a panel down the stairs from the entrance, so the lights worked, we got a fright after ten minutes when the ventilation fans started up. The underground part was large, lots of offices, some bunk rooms with beds still there. There were what had probably been a workshop, a large kitchen area. We also found a big office with a 1:50000 map of the south of England covering one wall. This office had about ten teletype terminals. There were lots of printouts dealing with a simulated atomic attack on the UK, giving estimated deaths in different towns.

    Well that was a total waste of time.
    All you needed do is go on Milton Sandford's website for the opening hours, you might even get to sample some of the wines they hold in stock if you're in the market to buy a few thousand cases.
    The full address, postcode, telephone numbers AND Photographs are all freely available online.
    It is used by the company as a massive WINE CELLAR, holding millions of bottles, as are other similar bunkers. MSW are one of the biggest wholesale wine merchants in the UK and supply Retail Outlets, Hotels and Restaurants etc. with a vast range of wines/fine wines and vintages.
    One look at the entrance and it's landscaped grounds should have told you it's not only occupied, it's well maintained and it's in use.
    Also, you kept refering to it as a Nuclear STORAGE Bunker. Nonsense !
    It was a refuge bunker for Local Government Officers in the event of something scary during the cold war, and not much else!

  • @buffplums
    @buffplums Před 5 lety +9

    I think this is an ex Army facility. The whole design is totally different to RAF bunkers that I have worked in.. I don’t think this bunker is that big your exploring around the outside of the shell of the building.
    The area looks like it was used as a working area. For the plant engineers. They usually work at the lower levels as most buunkers are usually wet and have to be continuously pumped out.
    Those oil drums are just general purpose lubes or for eng purposes. Oil storage for fuel is kept in la separate facility along with generators.
    Nuclear bunkers usually have a blast.
    Door and then gas tight doors so even if you had got through the big heavy duty door you would have come across the gas doors which I’ll bet are locked and from the inside.
    Day to day operations all the doors under ground would be open, to get in would be via a security block and a policeman or guard would take your ID card and give you a bunker tag and then they would open a turnstile to let you in. Then there is a walk to the blast doors. If these are closed then there is no way inn-or out until they are unlocked from the inside. They can be locked shut for the outside with padlocks if the bunker has been shut down. But they only are closed for the duration of potential risk from immediate blasts. But when the bunker was running under chemical risk to the outside environment, nuclear, biological or chemical then the gas tight doors are shut. Now they have a slight ability to leak air. This is so when there is danger of contaminated air entering the bunkers breathable air supply, huge fans in the plant rooms switch on and draw in filtered breathable air from outside and then pump this up to a little bit greater than absolute atmospheric. The the air supply inside is slightly greater than outside so the positive air in the bunker pisses out like a punctured inner tube in a bike that’s continually pumped up. That way nothing can get in.
    Now how do people get in when the building was in lockdown mode? Well there’s a facility called the CCA which is an air lock that is like a side tunnel that is in a C shape. This allows you to go around the side of the gas doors through a serious of rooms each separated by an air lock using electrically operated locks and the guy in control inside sits behind a heavy duty window window so he can let people in and out. CCA stands for chemical and contamination area..you enter into the dirty side in your NBC suit, nuclear biological chemical and you would change out of your dirty NBC suit and enter into the bunker
    .

      It was originally a chalk mine, converted into a civilian Regional Seat of Government bunker in the 60s. Used until the 70s, then was derelict until the early 80s, was then used by the MoD as an armed forces HQ for the region. Its very very cramped inside, they could never fit enough personnel and equipment in to fully outfit it as an RSG. Plenty of photos around of it from the 60s and 70s, including the interior. Is owned by a wine storage company now.

    New law says you must have the drone in line of sight, and not flown using phone or glasses ie fpv. without a spotter.

    Sweet!. Maybe ask the wine company nicely, and they might agree, you are documenting history. Just agree not to film their booze.

    im guessing the wine company is using the bunker to store wine keeping it cool and during the renovations they removed the stuff out and dumped it in the water tank area

  • @seymourpro6097
    @seymourpro6097 Před 5 lety

    Highly likely that the wine company has the interesting part possibly with vehicle access, and the part you saw was what the military ripped out to let them in. Likely there will be a generator plinth somewhere and sump pumps and vent fans.

    Great video sir. From experience I'm not going back in a cave without 3 days of food light and oxygen. Light's going out and low oxygen plays tricks in the mind. Not fun

    And FYI the van is taxed and has mot on it till September lol and also comes up as a grey ford van interesting so ide say the yard is used for storage of some sort not the building

    Running the light in the crapper and flushing the toilet is resulting in such a marginal loss that if you leave some coins by the washing basin you'd pay for it. Or leave a roll of toilet paper after you.
    If nothing else it would confuse people a bit. One of the good pranks you can pull as it won't really damage anything.
