  • Pokemon is a franchise that has spanned over 25 years, that's most of my life! There have been nine generations to date, and quality has been...variable. Are the old games TRULY the best, or is that just nostalgia? Can the future of this franchise be redeemed? Let's! Bleating opinions!
In addition to the nine core gens, we'll also include Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon Colosseum XD,
Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, and Legends: Arceus. They're "spin offs," but it's not like they're Pokemon Pinball, they're pretty much mainline games.
This is PREMIUM edit with fluff cut out and visuals added. You'll find THE LIVE version here!

    TIERING CRITERIA
    - It's just my opinion bro, but I will try to evaluate the games both as they were when released and whether or not they hold up in 2023.
HGS(S) Tier - Would recommend even to non-Pokemon fans
A - Would recommend to any Pokemon fan
B - Ok games, highs and lows
C - Passable for dedicated pokemon fans
D - Seriously flawed, would not pay for these games
Gamefreak's (F)inest - So bad you will no longer be a pokemon fan
Consider evolving into a mighty PatrEon!

There are four kinds of pokemon fans.
The fans, who became disillusioned and stopped buying the games somewhere between Ultra Sun and Moon and now
The lunatics who only play pokemon, they don't have time to play anything else because they're busy shiny hunting their third Spheal.
The secondaries who haven't finished a pokemon game since black and white, and are bamboozled at how bad the games are now before they fall back asleep and forget about it.
And the patricians/degenerates who obtained a barely passing, 59.8% score on Pokemon Smash or Pass, or better.

I agree and disagree with this at the same time.
Of course the games we played in our childhood have a much more special place in our hearts than the ones we play now in the little time we have between work and other adult responsibilities. But the fact is that these games were made for children when we played them as children and they are still made for children now.
Of course at the time red and blue/ gold and silver and even ruby and sapphire were released, only children played them as it was a new thing. The difference is that now, we have a big percentage of the game's player base being adults who grew up with it and still play it.
If you look at it from this perspective, you can't deny that a child will have a ton of fun playing Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, even with all its glitches. We all know how broken and glitchy the gen 1 games were and we didn't care and we still see them as amazing.
Of course that doesn't entirely excuse gamefreak for releasing a game filled with glitches and performance issues, the game runs very poorly, looks kinda bad even for a switch game and has a lot of glitches, but is a child who is getting into pokemon really going to care about that?
When I play a Pokémon game I don't want it to be a masterpiece, I don't want 8K graphics, a deep and compelling storyline, in depth RPG mechanics and mind bending combat systems.
I just want to find cool Pokémon, catch them, do some battles, get the gym badges, beat the E4 and then maybe do some post game stuff like completing the Pokédex, shiny hunt for 1 Pokémon I really like or do a bit of battle frontier/online battles.
If you just go into the games with that mindset maybe you won't feel so disenchanted with the games. I had a lot of fun with Sword, had a lot of fun with the gen 4 remakes and currently having a lot of sun with Violet, even if the framerate and glitches are really annoying.
Then you can say that as an adult you simply lost all interest in Pokémon, which is fine, but I don't think someone who lost all interest in Pokémon as they grew up would be watching a 3 hour video about it.

Pokestar Studio's best feature was how every movie had a secret ending you could get by ignoring the script in a specific way that you had to figure out completely on your own (though the medals might have had hints, I don't remember). It really fleshed out the side game more than anything else in the franchise.

The reason why the argument is the former and not the latter is because, despite how much money Pokemon brings in, Game Freak is a incredibly tiny company, and even still that company is split into two teams. If they tried to say it was because of annual releases, people would (Rightfully) point out that they could just hire some more employees to make the "HIGHEST GROSSING MEDIA FRANCHISE IN THE WORLD" better.
Let's be bluntly honest: The issue here is not the annual releases. There are ways around the annual releases, the problem is Game Freak is lazy and doesn't want to do Pokemon anymore, they don't want to just be known as "The Pokemon Guys", but they're also unwilling to actually let go of it because then they'd go back to being known as "The company that made PULSEMAN". You know, the hit game PULSEMAN, who doesn't know and love PULSEMAN?
GF wants to have their cake and eat it too, and because people reward them by buying the games, they keep cutting corners, doing less and less work. GF thinks they're too big to fall, and they're probably right.

When I was a kid, before Silver came out in America, I got the Japanese version of Silver in an import shop where I sometimes bought Japanese Pokemon cards from. I used a fan walkthrough on an old Angelfire/Geocities site on the ancient internet to beat the game. The site used blurry screenshots and listed the Pokemon by their Japanese names written in English. I called Wooper, Uppa, for a long time.
My greatest Pokemon memory was being in Victory Road and finding a mysterious brown sparkling Graveler. I was in shock and tried to catch it, but it used explosion. I looked for hours but never saw it again. My friends didn't believe me.
Growing up with reading on the internet about Pokegods and Pikablu, finding the Truck, messing with and catching MissingNo, and finding out about Mew. Red and Blue were insane and filled me with so much wonder. Then, after all that, playing the Japanese Silver and finding out that you could go back to Kanto, and that Red exists at the end of the game. It felt like anything could happen in Pokemon. You just had to be there.

Gen 1’s “story” deserves a lot more attention imo. The idea of digital creatures was brand new at the time, and its technical limitations kept Pokémon from seeming like actual creatures at a glance. To fix this, the story pit us against A) an asshole rival that only cares for strength, and B) a criminal syndicate that only treats them as tools for evil. They’re juxtaposed with you, a trainer who loves and trusts their monsters, seeing them as beloved companions. Without Gen I’s story, we would see them as no more than garbled collections of pixels and numbers. For that, I think it deserves a ton of merit for how simply effective it was in teaching kids what Pokémon is all about.

Venusaur might be the best Mega from a balance perspective. It started to fall off around this gen, but going Mega gives it like +20 to its offense and defense stats as well as a nice ability which neutralizes 2 of its weakness. And after all of that, it still has a couple of weakness which are decently accessible.
Mega Venusaur is the reason why I will defend and advocate for Megas in future gens.

The real problem of megas is they were very very stupid and decided, "oh, we NEED to give it to popular mons that are already strong," and either were dissapointments like Mega Garchomp, or didn't think for two seconds and created monsters like Mega Kangaskhan.
I just wish some megas could retroactively be evolutions (Mawile) with a bit of balancing, and return megas to fully evolved mons (Venusaur, Pidgeot, etc).

Couple of other things about OR/AS vs. Emerald because I feel like defending that guy who said OR/AS ruined Hoenn (even if it was a bit hyperbolic to say the least and my list is nitpicky) -
    * OR/AS destroys the more recursive region design by teleporting/moving you somewhere after a few story beats when in R/S/E you were meant to use shortcuts to move around the region and also inadvertently end up discovering side areas to go through. It's around the midgame where you go up towards Fallarbor/Lavaridge. You're meant to go around the west of the region back towards Rustboro and then Mauville from Meteor Falls and discover the second half of Route 115, but you just get moved instead. Then from Lavaridge to Petalburg, which ends up skipping the desert you're meant to explore now that you have the Go-Goggles, and then once again from Petalburg to Mauville, which is the most egregious one imo - that stretch of the game is when you're meant to realise how much side routes there are to explore that have been blocked by Surf, there's a shortcut from Oldale to Slateport specifically for that stretch that becomes completely useless, you just end up skipping so much stuff, and the whole freeform exploration part of Hoenn is its biggest strength as a region, so to specifically go against that because 'uhhhh kids have phones lol just laser focus them along the story path' feels completely nonsensical.
    * a few dungeons are straight up ruined in OR/AS. New Mauville and Granite Cave are pretty much just single rooms there for story's sake when in Gen 3 they were full fledged dungeons. Yeah Scorched Slab gets an upgrade, but it seems like that was morseo just as an excuse for Heatran to be in there without feeling *too* lazy, and it's not a particularly impressive upgrade either. Sky Pillar has the challenge of it removed for the sake of the Delta Episode. Also fun flavour stuff like Mirage Tower and the Desert Underpass just straight-up isn't there.
    * a lot of the extra battles are skipped out on from Emerald - including the gym leader rematches. Not a massive thing, but it meant you didn't have to grind on just the E4 for extra levels in the postgame. There was a bit more variety in what you were seeing and you could be a bit more indecisive with what Pokémon were on your team in Emerald vs. R/S in the main game without falling behind on the level curve, and also of course the gym leaders were a *lot* harder in Emerald vs. R/S and by extension OR/AS. Tate and Liza became the nightmare of anybody who didn't pick Mudkip. At least we got the Wallace rematch as a nod to the Steven postgame boss, but still.
Again, I'm aware some of this is nitpicky but on top of stuff like this, getting a free legendary in the midgame (especially considering the Latis are 2stronk), the Battle Frontier being grabbed away from us with Masuda and Ohmori giving us the finger while running away with it, OR/AS just fail as definitive versions to me. They're unironically the most disappointing games in the series to me, even vs. S/V and S/S, just because it would've been *so, so easy* to make them the best games in the series if they had just taken Emerald, added Gen 4-6 mechanical improvements and Pokémon to the game, improve encounter tables on the water so it's not just Tentacool and Wingull and made it 3D. Instead it just feels like a slightly more complete version of base R/S with bad changes to region design. 'The Battle Frontier Project has started!' is where I fell out of love with new games in the franchise.

I think thats something slightly overlooked. Games like Colloseum and Legends Arceus changed things up significantly while still feeling/working like the same game.

Criticism is the backbone of improvement...
Look, I find it funny how Sonic Fans got a better deal than the Pokemon fans in this scenario. I spent 60 dollars pre-ordering Sonic Frontiers (because the other choice was Pokemon Scarlet), and I didn't regret my decision after watching some glitch compilations. It makes it even more sadder that Sonic Team is giving us *FREE* DLC while Game Freak over here is saying "Welp! This shit is expensive and we clearly didn't charge enough, so fork over and additional 30 dollars!! LOL!!" is truly sickening... These people have enough money in their pockets to make free DLC where you can travel to Kanto, Joto, and the Hoenn regions and include Trastilization for all the Pokemon in those generations, they really have no excesses any more. Ohmori may say that they want to keep a small indie felling with there games, but that doesn't fly anymore since it's a billion dollar franchise. The other forms of Media that Pokemon has, well, to put it simple: No Game Freak = No Pokemon. Why do I say this, because the game came first. If it wasn't for Red and Blue, Green in Japan, and Yellow, then we wouldn't have the Anime, the cards, or the merchandise that came from it. Release schedules? Yeah, I think making a viable game should come first, and there is easy proof of that. Remember how bad Cyberpunk 2077 is? Or how about the opposite, where a game got delayed longer and came out in fantastic quality? Legend of Zelda Breath of the wild is a fantastic game that still holds up well on the switch, and it's sequel just released recently and is getting some amazing reviews. Seriously, we don't need a new Pokemon game every year, let alone twice in the same year (in the case of PS&V and PLA). Heck, even the arguments about why there is now two games is absolutely ludicrous. Just focus on making one game, and give us a single solid experience instead of 2 unfinished experiences that is uncomfortable without the other. Pokemon Legends Arcus could of been fantastic if they would of gave it more time in the oven. The same can be said if S&V were one game and had at least two more years in the oven.
The point I'm getting at is that at this point what Game Freak is doing is getting more predatory. It's getting to the point where they just want to make nothing but money and push out the cheapest products possible since they are too big to fail. The fact that some Pokemon fans will attack/go ballistic/try to argue with dull and dried out points to shut down criticism relay proves the predatory practices further. It's sad when people get so blindsided on what they have here and now that they forget what potential it could have if this team where to experiment around, collect feedback, and make the changes and improvements that are needed, we could actually start getting good games again. But things need to drastically change... I think that Ohmori should step down, or change his views on what Pokemon is, because it's no longer a small indie game, it's a multi million dollar franchise bigger than all of Disney. Pokemon should Evolve, and should be allowed to evolve since evolution is apart of the games. I also think that Pokemon fans should chill about others opinions contraindicating theirs, and welcome criticism into the community. They need to remember that not everyone is going to like what they like, and that's ok!! But you need to remember that if you spend your time shutting up the critics, then you'll truly never have anything good in your life...

Pretty great list tbh. I'd nudge gen 1 to S tier just for being an actually novel game with fresh ideas and ambition. There's plenty of jank but relative to the hardware they released on, gen 1 and gen 2 are quite impressive.
It's actually laughable how little each pokemon generation built on those foundations. Almost all that has followed is a copy/paste of a small town kid, three typical starter pokemon, a generic bird, a small mammal pokemon, 8 gyms, an elite four, a generic bad guy team etc etc. If I'm tiering them then they all lose points for being utterly stagnant and devoid of ambition.
Up to gen 4/5 they did tweak and improve the combat systems at least. Platinum, bw/bw2 and HGSS are probably the sweet spot for being fun to play today. Gen 6 onwards it feels like pokemon solely targets an audience of four year olds who have never played a video game before. Atrocious stuff. It should be so much more.

the sheer amount of content in HGSS is crazy. The director of the game had said that there’s so much content in them because he didn’t want them to feel like just simple remakes while still paying respects to the original games. meanwhile nowadays, pokemon games lack content because i guess children just enjoy mobile games too much and have short attention spans. i’m so glad the battle frontier has been a mainstay in the series to this very day!

PLA would be better if the research tasks were based more on doing stuff with the Pokemon rather than catching/defeating them. Leave those as options if you just want to grind mindlessly, but make the evolve, use X move, learn Y move, etc type tasks worth a lot more, and the generic catch/defeat tasks worth less. That makes you want to actually *use* a mon for research (and only catch a handful) rather than catching 20 of everything for research points.

Some of the Gen 1 mechanics were actually really interesting and should be brought back:
    1) Speed increasing Crit Chance was a good thing. It made the Speed stat less boring and actually made some shitty pokemon like Persian good. Although it should be rebalanced to be less overpowered. Like you should not be able to have 100% crit chance. And crits should take into account your own stat buffs... It's stupid that crits are actually weaker if you use Swords Dance and shit.
    2) Hyper Beam should still work like it did in Gen 1. It was a nice risk VS reward system. After the Gen 2 nerf, Hyper Beam is complete garbage that no sane trainer would use.
    3) I love how some of the shitty stats fodder mons were actually good with Gen 1 jank. Bring that back! With less jank and more fodder mons getting the spotlight.

Very thorough explanations given about the aesthetic qualities of the games.
My biggest gripe about the series is despite being a series about evolving, the games change very slowly in terms of mechanics. Lord, do not get me started on how much time breeding in gen 2, 3, 4, & BW 1 took. B2W2 improved it a lot. Love the candy EXPs given out in Gen 8 as well. Makes the grind getting a competitive ready team to lvl 100 or 50 easy if you have the resources.
Anyway, the biggest thing about the games are what does pokemon do better than other RPGs? Even rpgs relative to the times each game released, they're just outdone by those RPG standards. I love the series for the competitive, the lore, the music, & the locales, but there's RPGs that do everything better & quicker than pokemon.
Then it hit me, the very monster taming genre is the biggest bindings the series has, as it will be held to the ridiculously short deadlines.

      1) Rebalance the stats and movepools of every Pokemon and bring them to Gen 9 standards of Power Creep.
      2) Fix my boy Flareon already! Actually scrap that you should rebalance the entire roster. There's no reason why 60% of the dex should still be garbage in 2023.
      3) Since you mentioned a new battle system, I would change the battle system to something like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. This way it will be still turn based but be more interesting and fresh.
Either that, or go full action RPG mode like FF7 Remake.
      4) Make battles super fast paced. Remove the stupid and archaic "Pikachu was buffeted by hail! Pikachu was damaged!" "The sandstorm rages on!" messages, all they do is waste your time.
      5) Bring the graphics to modern AAA standards. Enough with the shitty animations, terrible frame rate, and boring artstyle. My dream Pokèmon game would be Zelda Wind Waker cellshaded graphics.
      6) Stop using the boring 3DS models and upgrade them to modern standards. They're so lifeless compared to sprites of the old games.
      7) Bring back the post games. I don't give a shit about your "mobile games, and kids have ADHD today!" bullshit answer, Masuda. The Battle Frontier should have been a staple by now. A post-game region should also be something they should have brought back after Johto games.
      8) Give me difficulty levels. There's no reason for the games to be still so mindnumbingly easy in 2023.
Easy Mode = Current difficulty we have now with Exp Share turned on by default
Normal Mode = Exp Share disabled unless you enable it, trainers use strategy and you have to think a bit.
Hard Mode = Trainers use competitive strategies, have higher level teams, and you have to actually build a good team to succeed.
      9) Shiny Pokemon should not be a single variant. A Shiny Pokemon should be a random selection of random palettes. So when you get the Shiny Garchomp, it can be its usual "Is That even shiny?" Color or if you're lucky it can be red, black, green etc.
      10) Bring back Megas and stop with the other useless gimmicks. No one cares about Gmax, Terastalization and shit.
      11) If open world, actually have gym leaders and important trainers level scale with you!
      12) Stop with the Kanto pandering. We need also Johto, Hoenn, Unova, Sinnoh and Kalos pandering.
Unfortunately, since normies keep buying the games, and no journalist in the game industry gives shit to Game Freak for the sad state of the games now, the chance of any of these points happening is 1 in 8192.
Seriously, other developers get crucified when they put out crap, Game Freak always gets away with it.

My Personal Tier List as a fellow 29 year old life-long Pokemon fan

    C - D/P, X/Y, OR/AS
    D - S/M, Sw/Sh
    F -
    Unplayed - S/V, US/UM, Gen8 DLC
Personally, I don't believe they have any F tier, unplayable 1/10 games from the ones I've played, but I've yet to play Scarlet and Violet so that could change. I also really didn't enjoy Sun and Moon so didn't even bother buying their sequels, making them the first main-line games I skipped ever. I do like the vibe of Sun and Moon which is why I didn't put them in F, but I totally could have.
All my C tier games feel so soulless but I had a few things I enjoyed like wonder trading was extremely fun for doing "wonderlocke" Challenges, Likely won't play X and Y or the gen 3 remakes again though. Diamond and Pearl are in this tier due to being so frustrating to play now, back before Platinum was released, I might have actually put them in A or B tier since I was younger back then, as well as the sort of recency bias I had back then.
For B tier, these are games that I like as a Pokemon fan but I really would not recommend non-Pokemon fans play them. I find the Let's Go games somewhat underrated. Yes, they are far too easy and they aren't aimed at myself as a target audience, but I have to admit I enjoy playing them to this day, I just ditch the starter and use weird Pokemon that I wouldn't normally use. As for the Gamecube games, I like how different they feel, I almost didn't want to include them though and don't always have a great time playing them. They can also be damn tough at times.
A Tier is a a section I think is just so solid. Yellow was my first Pokemon game but I played all 3 of the Gen 1 games throughout my life at some point. Yes, they are flawed but there is a genuine amount of charm that is honestly un-matched in gaming that I could have S tiered them, but I tried to not have too much nostalgic bias. All of this goes for the gen 2 games, Johto is my favourite region and these were probably my favourite Pokemon games for a massive chunk of my life. More about Johto when I get to their remakes. Ruby and Sapphire are extremely solid and have a seriously dynamic region that felt like it was living and breathing. There's not too much to pick apart with these games. Arceus was simply the most fun I had playing a main-line Pokemon game since gen 5. It's flawed, ugly as fuck to look at and at times felt derivative, but it felt like the first time I was personally the target audience for a Pokemon game. I think this style of game could be the way forward for Game Freak.
My S tier games are among my favourite games of all time, and are definitely my most re-played Pokemon games. FR/LG are just better gen 1, they are a little less charming but these are my recommended starting point for new players. I also love the added Sevii islands and wireless adaptors that came with them. Platinum is just so good, fixing all the issues with D&P really made Sinnoh stand out as an interesting region with a captivating story. I love playing Platinum and I find it a decent challenge as far as Pokemon games are concerned. B&W was amazing for me at the time. I love the story and the lessons they try to teach. I love the full brand new dex with no old mons until post game and I love the graphics and style. Same goes for the sequels but I liked the massive variety of Pokemon instead of the whole new dex. Emerald for me is just a much better R&S. Everything felt a bit more polished as well as the battle frontier being one of the best post games in Pokemon.
SS is obvious, HG&SS was just the best for so many reasons. My favourite region was brought to life and enhanced so much! So much was added and felt right in place. Following Pokemon, Pokeathelon, better post game storyline, much more balanced and challenging difficulty, stunning remade music (with the included GBsounds), the Pokewalker was an interesting gimmick that was actually fun. Theres a lot I could say but is covered in this video better than what I can in a comment.

There's one thing that I would like to disagree with. Not directly, but the implication that you made.
You said that Game Freak were just a small indie studio when Gen 1 was released and they really didn't have the resources to make a more polished game. I absolutely agree with that, and also they had to program the game in the CPU's specific assembly language (which was rather uncommon outside of the Gameboy) which is much harder to handle than writing stuff in higher level programming languages.
That said, in 2022 Game Freak had about 169 employees. That might be a lot bigger than most indie studios, but if you compare that with studios that produce AAA games this number is really small. And then consider that they always seem to be developing two games at the same time so that they can make annual releases. HAL Labs has about 200 employees (while making significantly smaller games), Bethesda has over 400 (they seem to be developing about 0.5 games at a time). And even then most companies just use a premade engine (Unity, Unreal, ...) to make their games in because it allows them to shift the focus to actually creating the "game" part instead of having to deal with engine development and optimization issues. But that might cost up to 5 % of the revenue - and the Pokemon Company really wants those 5 %.
Of course they could easily hire and pay another 200 or 300 people and still pump out one game every year, and that game might actually be good (after some adjustment period). There might even be an influx of players that end up making them slightly more money compared to the status quo. But who cares? People are still buying the games so the same amount of money or even much less is better spent elsewhere for an even bigger ROI. And that's the big Donphan in the room: the majority of the Pokemon Company's income is from licensed merchandise. 250 competent game developers and artists cost about 30 million dollars per year including all additional expenses. Advertise the TV show a bit harder, add a new feature to Pokemon Go, or put out a new gen so everyone will buy new plushies and stickers and pens and bags and posters etc. etc. and you'll have spent much less than 3 billion Yens and still get more money coming in than with a better game.
You said that it was Gen 3 when they got super greedy with how they placed the Pokemon in the games, making you buy more hardware and games to "catch them all". Take a wild guess when The Pokemon Company (formerly "The Pokemon Center Company" that only ran the brick-and-mortar stores) was formed and took control of operations.
    What a coincidence.
The old games weren't better because they were strictly better, they were better because The Pokemon Company wasn't around to try and milk everything as hard as they possibly could.
HGSS and B/W(2) must have been some glitch in the matrix or something.

Keep it up, subbed. You’re entertaining, put a lot of effort into your videos clearly, and you’re a gamer not just a Pokemon fan which is probably the worst thing about Pokemon CZcamsrs most of them only play Pokemon games and have a way overinflated idea of how good the games are (none of them are masterpiece games, arguably only Gen1 and maybe Gen2 were top games for their systems). I subbed and I can’t wait to see you do videos for other games, consider me an early investor, I think you’ll be a much bigger channel in a few more years. My first video games were Pokemon Red, Dragon Warrior 1&2, Yoshi’s Island on the Super Nintendo, and Super Mario Land so I’ve been a gamer long enough to be considered a boomer at this point, I agree with your comments Xenoblade Chronicles and Nier Automatically are 10/10 games and no Pokemon game is. Also Elden ring, Dark Souls, Resident Evil 4 .. some of the better Final Fantasy games. Anyway, keep it up bro, you’re the first Pokemon CZcamsr who has grabbed my attention enough to comment. But also, I’d like to see you branch out into variety gaming because you have really good takes about video games in general. The JRPG CZcamsr circuit doesn’t have much competition.. just a thought.

The game design for the original Pokémon game (red blue) could arguably be the greatest video game design in the history of any game, and this is coming from someone whose favorite all time game is Zelda. The stuff from Red/Blue is still being used to this day or has been used in multiple other Pokémon games going forward. I.E Safari Zone, acquiring a Bike, cycling road, Rival + rival battles throughout the game, SS Anne boat area, obtaining Fossils, obtaining and teaching TM 's and HM's (which can't be deleted), a wealthy town with a big shopping center and multiple floors, a haunted tower, a corporation building with multiple floors where you get Eevee, a game corner casino, an early game forest area, power plant, the ability to surf/fly/cut throughout the game etc. etc. The list could go on forever. Imagine where Pokémon would be today without Gen 1 originating all that and laying the foundation? You really have to step back and respect everything in that game while also being mind blown after every innovation they created. The original game design from Pokémon Red/Blue was made so perfect that the games are still being successfully created to this day. Truly ahead of its time.

I really liked this tier list and I can agree with 90% of the placements. I also think that Pokemon was so much better in the past. Game Freak became pretty lazy and it seems that they only focus on money instead of a lovely created game these days. I can't stand DLCs. Especially not if it's required to get a more finished game (even though it still only feels like 50% finished for the Pokémon games).
My theory is that this extreme downfall started with Pokémon Go. Because this game became a phenomenon and made Pokémon even bigger than it was before. And now Pokémon is ,,too big to fail". So, no matter how crappy their games are, they still sell a ridiculous number of units (like Scarlet/Violet; like how did they sell so well??).
And Cheese, if you read this, I really liked the Yokai Watch reference. This game is so good and I would love to see content about this game in the future!

Oh hey, MadSeasonShow, love that guy.
I'd rate XY and Sun and Moon higher, personally. Y was the introduction of my favorite Pokemon, Spritzee, and the first game I actually completed the Pokedex in; my Y save has over six hundred hours played, because I was in high school when it came out and spent most of my breaks playing, and eventually foraying into teambuilding now that it wasn't completely opaque. I wound up with a monotype team for each one, and some of them wound up being pretty great. I also loved the rollerskates. It hit at just the right time for me, and it's still a bit of a comfort game honestly. Objectively it's not great, but it's my favorite to replay. I did really like the story of Sun and Moon, and so when USUM came out I was not happy about the changes they made. Now instead of being punished for being an abusive parent, Lusamine gets custody of her children and no one questions her or if her behavior has changed because she was trying to save the world that one time. I'd also put Emerald a bit higher, and gen one a bit lower since I didn't play it at the time beyond like, two or three hours in Yellow and won't now (though I think I still have the cart around here somewhere...) For the time they were pretty revolutionary, though the first Digimon World game would come out I believe a few months later.
One of my biggest gripes with the story in SwoShi is that "let the adults handle it" was a refrain of Faba, who was literally a villain, in Sun and Moon. I also wouldn't care if SwoShi had voice acting if they wouldn't act like it did. Then you said they couldn't sell the same game twice if they remade the third game, but HGSS incorporate the changes from Crystal so clearly that's not true.

I have a few rebuttals to a few of these particular placements, if nothing else to add a little bit of discussion:
R/B: I really gotta say, A tier for these games is still too high. Besides just the glitchy nature of the game, it's got tons of glaring issues for balance and quality of life:
-Bug, Poision, Fighting, Dragon, and Ghost are basically non functional, and Normal and Psychic have no weaknesses worth talking about.
-Most of the available Pokemon in a specific version suck, and plenty of them are gated behind annoying catch requirements.
-Having an active Casino in a children's game, even in 1996, should be docking points for clear reasons.
-The Quality of life is through the floor. You can't see stats go up when you level up, you can't check what moves do during combat, the inventory is an actual mess, you can't get rid of HM's ever, TM's don't tell you what they do till you use them....
I think there's enough constraining problems to not recommend it to a new fan of the series. Is it good? Yes. Would I recommend it to somebody who hasn't touched the series? It should be B tier.
And in defense of Gen 3 games after RSE: While it's true that FR/LG and the Coliseum games are quite greedy, I think other games should be given the same marks against them because the whole franchise does this:
-If you buy any of the third edition games, with exception of Black 2 and white 2 (which does something else entirely) require you to buy one, if not both of the other versions to fill out your Pokedex. The superior (Bad Pokemon by the way) version still needs both other versions to rake in all the regional mons.
-There's a notable amount of mons in Platinum you cannot obtain normally unless you buy HG/SS. Same goes with ORAS having mega evolutions you can't play against unless you shell out for the upgraded version.
-Black 2 and white 2 are missing a single Pokemon you can't catch to fill out your Regional Dex 100%: Victini. If you do everything else and catch every other Pokemon, you HAVE to have played Black and White and transferred, requiring you to buy the prequel games.
I think it's pretty hard to judge these Gen 3 games when the rest of the series does this as well. This is a series wide issue, not just a single generational problem.

    • @TheEeveeKing
      @TheEeveeKing Před rokem +2

@@pikminologueraisin2139 I think an RPG that came out after the SNES Era of RPG's still has to be held to account. Chrono trigger, Earthbound, SMT, Final fantasy, even Dragon quest where games to study on and pay attention to for inspiration. Final fantasy 1, a game released almost a decade earlier, had a ton of issues, but it was also the second game of it's craft, really.
Gen 1 does not get bonus points for having a sick ass competitive scene, expecially one played almost exclusively outside of the game itself.
Generation 1 has an absolute treasure trove of trash, in either design, or in stats. Lets run the gambit:
Butterfree, Beedrill, Pidgeyott, Raticate, Arbok, Pikachu/Raichu, Sandslash, Persian, Golbat, Parasect, Wigglytuff, Venomoth, All the fighting types with exclusive exeption of Polywhirl, Victreebell, Farfetched, Dewgong, Muk, Onyx, Drowzee, Gen 1 Kingler, Tangla....
The list goes on. For every good gen 1 mon in the main game there's complete garbage or electric rat.
The games are not bad, you mis-understand.. But I connsider A tier a "Great" game, and RBY are not great. They are the B tier, which is for good games.

Its just a little sad how nearly all the issues with scarlet and violet (and recent pokemon games) seem to come down to having barely any time to make the game.
Everything seems done with the intention of saving as much time as possible. The graphics and bugs are obvious, but even things like removing ride pokemon, or having a gimmick that works the same for every pokemon, or the quickly done animations, or the empty worlds, or how each game is basically a copy and paste of the exact same formula, etc.
Playing Tears of the kingdom recently really kind of showed me again how amazing and alive an open world game can be when the time and care is put in to making it so polished, and when every corner of the game is lovingly handcrafted with things to do.

    • @cielbie8251

But why does it feel so much better than pokemon? Because its all got care. Every quest and NPC feels a little unique and personal with soul, there's a hint of humour with the repeated stuff (like the signpost guy), and every inch of the map is filled with unique things to see, do, and collect.

Other times, they only write a portion of the save, relating to your progress in-game. This is when your PC storage has not changed - and this is why accessing the PC always forces the full rewrite. The PC storage is naturally the largest part of the savefile.
The thing is, this data could be stored more efficiently, or it could be compressed, or the game could have shipped with a faster chip... there were various ways of making it save faster which GameFreak just chose not to utilize.

My favorite part of your videos are the horrible, eye searing, soul crushing, mood ruining gigachad edits of Pokemon. They're disgustingly horrible, I love them.

22:35 I'm pretty sure in gen 2 there's at least a quality of life improvement regarding boxes in the form of Bill calling you whenever the current one is full.

Hey Bill thanks for the warning, but how about you fix your box system?!

@@ImportedCheese Honestly, this man probably has spent most of the time between GRBY and GSC dealing with body dysphoria after his Clefairy transformation. Half-measure towards the big problem with his system is acceptable lore-wise.
Gameplay-wise it is annoying, or rather would be, if you were to catch more mons that Geodude, Abra, something to swim, maybe Mareep, maybe Houndour and potentially Misdreavus (to Perish Song Red's Snorlax).

Funny thing is, I remember watching a video that's basically going over a website that's the Japanese equivalent of glassdoor. A common theme among GameFreak employees is them admitting that they know the games will sell well regardless of what they do.
