- By the end of the 1940s, it was clear that the era of piston-engined fighters was over: new jet-powered birds were already spreading their wings. And even though the US was one of the earliest and the most enthusiastic adopters of modern aircraft configurations, the Korean War made the US military realize that it was still not enough. Pilots that faced Soviet MiGs requested an aircraft that would be simpler, lighter and faster than the F-86 Sabre.

My uncle was a starfighter pilot, and boy oh boy did he love the thing. He weirdly enough especially loved how difficult it was to land it, and thought that the eurofighter was too easy of a plane to fly when they introduced it in 2004 lmao

must be a pretty crazy feeling to switch between those 2 jets, even tho it would have been a heavily modified version of the starfighter at the end of the day its still a 50 year old aircraft at the time :)

@@thefrenchbaguette919 It doesnt. In most cases crashes were caused by pilot errors. High stall speed, not much maneuverability and use of it as ground attacker (despite it being VERY VERY bad plane for this role). With all extra weight taking off was difficult as well. Its like an P-39 situation, where it is "bad" for americans, but actually good in soviet hands.
The F104A was my first supersonic aircraft in War Thunder. Back when it was first introduced it was so potent after some practice. I was able to pull 5 kills out of a match sometimes! Still one of the most rewarding aircraft to master.

@@immort4730 F-104J, and it doesn't ONLY get 9bs, however it's stuck with two stock which might as well not exist
problem with the starfighter was (at least here in germany), that we wanted to use it for things it was not made for.
Yeah. No idea how they come to conclusion that using it as Su-25 will be a good deal, but having it as fighter as meant to be? Nah, that is not a good deal, it is just fastest plane on entire planet that is better then everything else we have.

@@alexturnbackthearmy1907well, germany used it in this role because it was advertised as being capable to fullfill this role by Lockheed. Also let's not forget how Lockheed paid bribes to get their aircraft accepted by the Bundeswehr instead of the more suitable Mirage III

Spading all three Italian Starfighters is a point of pride and a lot of pain for me. Remember when Gaijin thought the F-104S was just fine at top-tier with no countermeasures? Good times...

I remember first months.. top tier were: F-104, F-4, Mig-21, Lightning.. F-104 was like Speedygonzales, nobody could catch me 😂 flare useless. Than aim-7 arrived .. no rwr 😱you could play only low altitude and again, 104 was untouchable 😂

I unlocked ASA version. It was hard but with new missiles it was operable. After some time players became more good and bad rwr of ASA was problem.
Now I don’t use ASA version because direction of RWR is fundamental. Some time I like use S or A version. I’ve never used G but I think is better than S because lower br, I can do without aim-7.
I hope they will make the version of F-104A with the engine of S version. 🤩 (104A is the lighter weight)
It was adopted by only one group of USA Air Force.

A few years back I read a journal about Dutch pilots in their starfighters. Indeed, for pilots in Germany, Italy and Taiwan, the losses were quite high, but there were less accidents in Japan, Spain and the Netherlands - flying within the envelope. Just like real life, if a war thunder player can fly the starfighter within what the manual says, but pushing their controls ever so closer to the limits, great results will be yielded.

"just like in real life" i use the f104 ften, it just cannot break or lose control in turns even with bombs, never happened to me that's often how i survive, compared to that you have the tornado that should be better: break all the time even when you pay attention.
What most people don't consider tho, is that Spain didn't have the f104 in service for long

@@soldat88hun Indeed, yet many players played it like a fighter-bomber, especially the premium F-104S, which is decently effective because it gets to the bases first even in a full uptier, with one of the better top tier premium reward ratios
@@ilovemr2 they did replace them with hornets and typhoons soon, unfortunatly, it is likely that we wont see a Spanish F-104 in the game
My grandpa is Starfighter pilot in Taiwan part of the unique requirements of Taiwan interceptor docterine was to 5 mins from runway to stratosphere, starfighters was the only plane ever to achieve that, since Hsichu Air force base was so close to main land china, pilot simply do not have the airspace or the time to climb, they have to climb to 40000 ft before entering China mainland to counter the chinese made Mig-19 or Mig-21

I love the styling of the F-104. It's so sleek, and personally just a beautiful plane.
A true beast of a plane when flown to its strengths. But it'll bite you if you aren't carefull.
US airforce always amazes me. They had an 5-8:1 kill ratio on MiG-15s in Sabres and STILL they went like "nah this isn't good enough".

@@LewisB3217 Depends on the Saber version, and possibly game mode. Personally in Arcade AB where I spend more time - 7.7 for the 86A-5 and F-25 is actually pretty well on the money, the sudden 1.3 BR increase to the F-2 to 9.0 because it has some pretty bad cannons with a low ammo count but is otherwise an F-25 in every other way, yeah, no, that thing is so over BR it's not even funny, 8.3 may even be a bit much.
Though at higher tiers - yeah, I have a lot of questions why some of the American aircraft are as high of a BR as they are, though, I have more questions why a lot of the Russian planes across all ranks are the rather low BR's they are.

Not only Spain didnt lose any aircraft, but once a wing cut a light post and suffered no damage, while the post became two parts with a perfect cut, just like swords in anime.
Italy = F104 Generation, it's lovely to play and it's amazing to climb in 60 second from FL0 to FL360 and to be supersonic

One of my favorite MST3k episodes is The Starfighters which, if you don't know, follows the lives of a few pilots getting used to the roll-in of the new F-104's. Hell there's even two long scenes that are about the aircraft outright not working as intended. Funny episode of MST3k, actually insightful movie attached to it-- helping me gain a perspective that makes the Starfighter a goal of mine for sure, in the Japan tech tree.

Apparently they had to put some radar avionics in place of the cannon

When I unlocked the plane I was very disappointed there wasn't any fighting with stars.

I’m not sure if he was ever at any or if he just heard from friends around the neighborhood or school but he remembered something along the lines of “F-104” or “starfighter”
I love playing the german F104, really good boom and zoom plane, cannot break with g or turns, real fast, keep momentum going vertical, have ok missiles/bombs, real good canon, and counters, as it's br you are usually the only one that combine all that at that speed, A10 are usually easy prey since you are out before they can engage you back, you just never ever want to dog fight.
Yep, just run away if someone tries to get you to turn.

Ngl this thing is ironicly very good low down bomber a mini f111 😅 especially in sim.
after soo many hour with this plane I can say that it's an extreme boom and zoom fighter ..if you are carful enough and have awareness you can score 2-3 kill in each match with relative ease
You aren't really flying an F104 unless you bring full fuel and have the afterburner on at all times.
I love it, I love them all, I would love a functional RWR with direction in the ASA regardless of actual use cases.

104s.asa is outclassed in game by everything at it's br, the 9js are good but most planes have them so it's still vastly Inferior option.

Yeah - the American ones at least (only ones I've played so far) either need a drop in BR in arcade at least, or, given that they were still operational when the AIM-9E was entering service, and even some getting new engines, a slightly better Sidewinder. I'd argue more for the BR drop for similar reasons to the F-105 in that mode needing one - lack of countermeasures really hinders these planes at 9.7 and 10.7 respectively - especially seeing as they see crazy advanced heat seekers and lack flares, and if you trade ordnance for chaff, the 105 only has some protection against radar guided missiles.
I do pretty well with them, but the split BR is a problem for everything

My old uncle was a pilot of the f104g of the Dutch Air Force but the G variant wasn’t the best so he had a engine failure above sea he only ejected 20 meters from the sea his parachute didn’t even fully open and btw now do da German phantom I’m suffering

...which was entirely on germans. They really thought that hard to control plane with very high speed (and high stall speed too), low amount of ordinance and extremely hard to fly with said ordinance is a good attacker. And that flying it VERY close to ground is good idea as well. Result? It was not very bright idea after all.

@@alexturnbackthearmy1907 it was kind of necessary. The Bundeswehr was not expected to hold against concentrated soviet attacks. Due to doctrinal decisions battalion-sized units of NATO might have faced 2 or 3 soviet armoured divisions attacking in waves. That means you need quick response times from spotting the first T-72 to putting a bomb on it. The soviets also had a very dense air defense network. So you needed to fly fast and close to the ground to avoid radar. Which needs to be practised. A lot. Thats why the fastest way to get a f 104 in germany was to buy a field and simply wait for one to crash. Its the reason german helicopters never did any inti.infantry or logistics work, that was left to ones we bought from the US The German BO helicopters were designed to fire ATGMs, land anywhere convenient for rearming and get back to killing tanks.
