I am really bothered by sharp fretboard edges, I’ve tried and not bonded with 3-4 Mexican fenders. I guess I’m cursed by having started out with a well worn heritage from the 80s. I finally talked myself into a rosewood board so I can roll it myself if I don’t like the feel, and had actually just bought a Jimmy Page mirror tele off reverb the day before the player II series was announced or I’d probably have driven an hour to the guitar stores today to try out a player 2 if they’re in store yet. I can’t wait to get my hands on my new guitar, but I’ll probably still want to try out a player 2 one of these days.
I think that sometimes people make a change in order to keep themselves motivated to keep playing and practicing. We like trying something new and shiny. I guess the secret is to know what gear you are truly attached to and hang onto it. I like the honest no nonsense approach of this channel. 🎸👍🙂
You've already bought that guitar in your mind, Shane. Just throw down the cash for it before it's gone. My biggest regrets are not what I sold, but what I didn't buy when I had the chance. One of which was a PRS SE 277 semi-hollow with the soapbars. I saw a gorgeous one at the guitar shop one day. The most beautiful tight flame maple I've ever seen and the color was perfect. I sat on it for one night, went back to get it the next day and it had sold 10 minutes before I got there. I ended up buying a used one a few months ago, but it's not even close to that one I saw. There's some lucky person out there with it. I should have bought that first one the moment I saw it.
Mate I just want to reach out and say I love your podcast. No bullshit straight talking info and best of all from an Australian perspective which is so different because of pricing down here. Well done. Keep em coming!
No Left handed basses is a massive L. Bad enough we get left out of other product lines, but they just couldn't resist gutting the line that actually gave us some options. Really wanted a lefty offset (JM), and a lefty mustang bass. Wouldn't care if they only offered them in the standard black. But nah, Fender just has to shaft us more than usual even though other companies much smaller can somehow make different left hand models.
The left-hand player 2 series look great until you realise that out of 3 choices of colours 2 are regurgitated colours from the last player series in the white and sunburst and then just one other colour. Waited years for an update and this is all we get unless you've deep pockets. Fender dont care at all for left handed players.
@Stevethomas i gave up on fender along time ago because they refused to offer us a left-handed strat with humbuckers in it or even a telecaster with double humbuckers in it, for the money I’ll stick to Schecter and Keisel guitars two companies actually care about the left-hand community
I think you’re right about modeling. Because what they are trying to do is copy tube amps, they’re at the point where the processing has gotten as perfect as it can get, or very close to it. Yeah, people can hear the difference, but the difference at this point is really in the physical amplification, not the modeling. It sounds different because it’s coming out of the PA, and not the guitar cab, etc. The differences going forward are going to be how much stuff you can put in the chain, unit size, and user interface…
I once sold a TS808 to a good friend, but asked to buy ut back from him a year later. Luckily he agreed, and twenty-five years later I still have it. Many more things I've sold then regretted doing so, but was unable to buy back, ir even buy another of the same type. A beautiful Les Paul deluxe, a Vox AC30 STR (head), a Marshall JCM 800 channel switching head with reverb, and an early sixties rosewood neck white strat, which I traded for a Les Paul custom that was in pieces, that once I finished having it rebuilt was disappointing in tone. The list goes on. Most times I sold something in order to buy something else, then found the original item too expensive to replace. Talk about seller's regret!
What’s crazy is I follow your other CZcams channel with the tech and cameras and I never knew that you played guitar. It must been me not paying attention. I wanna learn how to play guitar. I’m over here looking for CZcams channels about which one’s better the Strat or Tele and you pop up.🤷🏾♂️
i sold a number of guitars and basses due to a serious shoulder injury. i thought i would never play again so, got good prices for them. Five years later, I’m playing again. Wish I had a couple of those basses and three of those guitars back.
Shane, interesting discussion. I only wish that I could buy back or get back some of the gear that I sold at one time or another. As I got older I have not been as quick to let things go so fast. If only we had the way back machine 🤓 All the best! CC
I sold a a Boss Katana mk2 100 and shortly thereafter I realized how much I liked the sounds. It is just so versatile. So I bought another. Wasn’t a too expensive mistake.

Thinking about the guitar that you might re-buy: I think you mentioned that this was your first guitar, and this rang a bell with me: could this just be a case of nostalgia, and perhaps curiosity? I went through a similar thing. Early in my playing career I had a Gibson S1 (some say Marauder), and I remember liking it but wanting something better: eventually I sold it. A while back, some 50 yrs later, I started thinking that I wanted to get one again, partly to see how good it was. It's hard to find one under £1500, so I decided to forget about it: apparently they only made 8000.
Oh man, there’s three guitars out their in the world that I wish I never sold. I still ended up with a rig I love but I know somewhere out there is a Tele Delux that was perfect for me. I didn’t appreciate it at the time
I agree. CZcams is getting pretty watered down this last year. I think your hard-core followers are still gonna tune in for the angle you take on budget gear. The reality is, that most of us live in a budget friendly world. We appreciate the realistic approach you have. Watching kids demo guitars they can't possibly afford, won't EVER change what real players want. Real players mostly just want function over form. If it's great to play, feel and tone wise. That should be paramount. Recently bought my first 6pt. full floating tremelo equipped guitar. Has a skinny neck and everything! NF3. It's a very well spec'd and constructed guitar. Definitely trying some new stuff. Only guitar I can think of that I'd buy another after selling. SG Modern. Now I have a Revstar. End of story.
I enjoy your channel for your perspective as a fellow lefty and to see what's going on in your neck of the woods. Gear is gear but the personality is why I subscribe to CZcams Channels.
Great pod cast Shane.. interesting to hear how your tastes have changed. Been following you for a while and been playing even longer, I know what you mean about thin necks thick necks and wanting everything the same to eventually not caring and just seeing how the guitar makes you feel and therefore play. Same here … keep them coming!
Great video and one of my eternal dilemma's. 5 years ago I bought a Fender American Original 60's Telecaster. Loved the sound of the guitar but the nut was badly cut so I sent it back and brought a Les Paul. I've fretted over that decision for all 5 of those years. Just given way and ordered a mint model in Lake Placid Blue. I feel at peace.!
Hi Shane, please keep positive, and understand that we love your video's. You have some of the best content, and your reviews, I trust 100%. Thanks for what you do :)
You’re a great guitar player Shane. I love listening to you play and I’m always curious about how you get the tones you do. Maybe you could show us how to find the spot on certain amplifiers how to tweak the guitar in the amplifier to get more tonalities out of them.
I remember that strat! It's the one that introduced me to the Zexcoil pickups, which I have in two axes. One of which has sadly just sold, but a man must do what he must do sometimes hahaha
The player 2 Mustang w/o trem would be great with medium flats. Jim Campilongo uses a duo sonic and seems to have fun burning up that short scale. Thanks for the reviews!
Cool video. Interesting topics as I traded away my HXStomp but regret it and now looking at buying another one. I liked the Stomp interface and it does what I want for a still decent enough price.
Hey, Shane! About the modeleres, I agree with you. Sound wise I think that most sound almost the same. The IRs in the units make the difference, and if they have an IR loader and you use it with your own IRs they may sound the exact same. I think it comes down to the options the unit provides in terms of I/O, software features (like snapshots in Line 6 land), the effects you want, and how complex you want your signal chains. But not on the sound of the unit, IMO. The models the companies capture usually vary a bit in EQ sensitivity and gain structure. But, tbh, you can really make them sound the same by tweaking the knobs 🤷🏽♂️ Glad to see you here, again!
I think what draws me to your channel is you don't seem like a gear/brand snob and your reviews seem to be legit and because of that your content is some of the best.

I have purchased a Brand New Martin HD-28, sold it, purchased another Brand New Martin HD-28 and sold it... purchased another Brand New Martin HD-28. but this last one I still have. Rinse and repeat purchases, lol, since I started playing in 1979!!
I've bought the same guitars over and over. I'll get tired of one, sell it, then later miss it and buy a new one. I've probably had 6 Epiphone Broadways in 20 years. And have lost count of the telecasters.
I can't believe just how long I've watched, vox ac15 ......blues junior. Get a vox ac15 again, I love them. Went from a 30 to a 15 twin and finally a modded AC15CC1. Best wishes from the Midlands UK ❤
Shane Bro, just an idea with all the cost of living crisis going on, especially here in Australia with, inflation, gear is getting more expensive, In my opinion you should definitely continue best bang for buck gear series, guitars, amps, general gear etc .Shootouts are always popular too. imho🤔. Help us save some dough bro.. 🤑
I have a Marshall DSL20CR right now I am trying to sell, it is just too loud for my home. I had a Marshall MG30GFX awhile back and sold it but "don't hate me" I am thinking about getting the Marshall MG50GFX because of the effects loop it has. We'll see. Great video Shane.
Some of the gear I've sold was because I needed money, and other times it was because i wasn't as happy with some guitars as others I had. The ones that I've had the most of were several Mexican Standard Strats, several Squier CV 60s Strats (I currently have a CV 70s one loaded with PV65 pickups), several MIJ Fernandes LE2 60s reissues, a few used Am Std Strats, and 3 Peavey Classic 30 amps.
Other channels will do too many straight reviews and they review everything. The best practice, I think is to do follow ups and comparisons, reviewing products people ask about or suit you... you do all these things and more. Stands out above the noise. Anyway I'm thinking I might try to get s player Jaguar while they're cheaper now used. The player ii feels like a step up, but the previous iteration is a real good used value the past couple years
Modeling has peaked IMHO. Once Line 6 Helix came out.... The modelers got good enough to no longer sound different then amps.. They're pretty spot on. In fact.. I bet most people can't tell the difference when listening to the playback. Once a thing is functionally in place.. And works and sounds good... What to make it better? You know what Ive noticed.. Sometimes gear sits because I just don't know how to use it right. Case and point Im now finally good enough to play past the 12th fret. Once that happened... I realized many of my guitars weren't even intonated. So now there's guitars I thought I hated but were just not setup.
I do agree. Modeling has come a long way. I used a POD XT for years and thought it was great until I plugged back into a tube amp and realized how flat and digital that POD XT sounded. I stayed away from modelers for years after that. But, after hearing the latest in modelers, it's audibly impossuble for an audience to tell the difference. However... As a player, I still get a better feel and vibe from tube amps and their natural characteristics such as sag (compression) and natural overdrive at higher volumes that I still don't get from modelers. Would I tour with a modeler? Absolutely. But, when I'm the player and the only audience member in the room, I'll take a tube amp any day.
@@BluesDeville I have a Fender Hotrod Deluxe 60w tube. Honestly it's the standard for me and that amp isn't going anywhere. Basically I take my Line 6 Helix and make it sound as close as possible to my one tube amp. I like Tubes too. Not sure if it's because Im comforted by them or they actually sound better. I guess what keeps me on line 6.. Is Im paranoid of blowing a tube and loosing my sound. Rember 2020 or some time around there when tubes were almost impossible to find? That freaked me out a bit. So I went looking for an acceptable solid state.. Just incase.
Ill admit that I consider Line 6 Helix an acceptable substitute for an Amp... But I agree that tubes seem to have a certain dynamics to them. I also like how tubes clean up when you turn your guitar volume down. Line 6 isn't as smooth in its dynamics.. Now strength of Line 6 is it's reliable. It's always going to sound the same. Ive had days that my tube amp sounded so good it was outrageous... For whatever reason.. but I wasn't able to reproduce it.
@@petersouthwell5971 Agreed on all of your points. I will eventually buy another modeler for the reasons you stated to have one. Also... Those days where your tube amps sounds amazing and other days not so much. I have those days, too. It's kind of those dynamics that I love about tube amps. Same reason I like germanium fuzzes. Their dynamics can change and my playing vibe kind of changes with them.
Yeah, back in the day we didn't have 900 choices of decent affordable instruments. We played what we could find/afford. That has allowed me to not much care about neck shape, fret count, pickup config ... and so on. At this point it's more about wether I connect with the essence of the guitar.
Fender, in 2016 moved all their manufacturing equipment from the Corona plant to Ensenada and got all new machines. That's why the Pro and elite lines were terrible and the MIMs improved. 8 years later both sites have finally learned how to use their machines. Thus the Ultra Luxe and Player II.
There is more of the Player series coming out later in the year including more left hand models and chambered mahogany bodies. Saw in on Andertons channel.
Fender Player 2s are nice guitars! Then again, I bought a MIM standard Fat Strat from a guy in a band called Green Ripper for $400. As far as recycling gear, well, I had an Ibanez RG470 MIK I sold. Always wanted another RG. Eventually added an RG-something with a Aqua Blue sparkle finish and Double-Locking trem. And I also added an RG with a Dragon-Eye stained flame maple arch top and a fixed bridge. Both amazing instruments and super sweet. Feel more like an upgrade than a replacement. That old MIK RG I had was beat up. These are almost new condition.
It may be worth revisiting the Fender TMP.... The upgraded software seems to have made the unit much better from the reviews I have seen, however, I haven't used the unit myself, so I'm just going on other peoples opinions.
That Birch green players 2 strat with rosewood, man it looks so nice. If I didn't have already a great players plus top tobacco burst with pau ferro I would buy it in a heartbeat
What you call a PJ bass is actually a short scale Mustang bass with the PJ pickup layout. And a big fail for not mentioning the chambered ash and mahogany bodied Strats and Teles.
Return of rosewood is welcomed with player but never understood people buying these new, for same price of a new mim player you can get a second hand American standard.
I saw the “upgrades” in features for the new Player II. Not feeling it other than colors. Now bring in locking tuners, roasted maple necks, and stainless steel frets….. then you’ll have a real upgrade.
As our experience evolves, we can better appreciate the qualities that we desire that might not have been evident to us duing a more chaotic time. So, I say buy the Strat!
I say right away - past me. This whole series has vintage tuners, which I really don't like. Which is what I wrote about in the official Facebook group.
Bought and returned/sold the EP Booster pedal 3 times, the MXR Micro Amp pedal twice, the original Fender Player guitar 4 times, the Monoprice/Harley Benton Stage Right 5- and 15-watt amps twice... Yeah, I agree that I don't care about neck shape as much anymore, or about modding guitars.
I’ve sold and repurchased too much gear to count. Not the exact item, but same make and model. Two that come to mind are Peavey Classic 30 amp and Road Worn Telecaster. Fender MIM guitars are awesome playing and sounding. My issues w them is they’ve gone up in price a lot, and they are heavy.
I have a deluxe strat from 2003 with the noiseless pickups. I think they sound good. Eventually I might change them out for real single coils but they’re completely fine for now
Shane has a great question - if it’s just acting in a reverse manner, that is an easy fix. You could swap the outer 2 lugs and the pot will work in the correct manner
@@intheblues My experience. The player, player + American Original and the Vintage II have righty pots wired backwards so the rotation is correct but the taper is at the wrong end. The Pro 2 has proper lefty (reverse taper) pots.
Great stuff Shane I’ve always been a fan ..I just got an Eastman t486 and am very impressed with it will you take a look at them please ? Your the best 👌👍

Player Two is a nice comeback, rosewood boards should always be available… I would say modelers are probably going in the direction of Impulse Response amps and FX…. Taking that same concept of creating speaker can IR’s, I believe that’s the only way forward
Grab the guitar. It’s calling you for a reason. Worst case scenario, you sell it again for the last time (maybe 😂). Love the show. Keep up the great work.
Fender if you are listening, none of the offsets in the Player II lines are left-handed! THE ONLY NEW non-US OFFSET FENDER IN LEFT-HANDED IS THE JAG-STANG. just wtf, can we get some other guitars besides teles and strats? What about all those Jags and Mustangs Kurt Cobain used to play? Letting us Lefties down
I actually kinda like that Aged Cherry Burst. It's very soft, not as aggressive as a full sunburst. I don't think it looks cheap either. I do think that Aquatone Blue looks kinda cheap though, even though blue is my favourite colour. It reminds me of the entry level Kramer Focus in Teal. It's probably a really nice colour and the picture just isn't doing it justice. 😅
yes, I agree with the spread sheet idea but there is one item that I will NEVER purchase again because I have had many and always hoped I would change my mind but I am absolutely done with ANY stratocaster guitar regardless of any mods.
I’ve bought and sold so much stuff over the years, lol. I don’t usually regret selling stuff, but I’ve definitely bought things back when it makes sense over the years. Can only own so much stuff at one time. Definitely some pedals and amps that I would buy back if I had space. Going through that dilemma right now actually. Just got a 64 Vibroverb Custom. Wondering if I should keep or sell my Super Sonic 60. Both close enough to the same wattage that they fill a similar niche for me. The Super Sonic is way more versatile on the fly, but the Vibroverb is just phenomenal clean or overdriven. Trying to justify keeping both, 😂. With fewer than 1000 vibroverbs made, I’m not parting with that. Too hard to find another.
Hey Shane I like your channel because you do different stuff, speaking of which how about a review of one of those wicked looking in-house guitars you showed us when you were doing a music shop visit. You can talk yourself into anything if you try hard enough matey. Digital tone may improve but will we be able to hear the difference? Doubtful.
I sold my Gordon Smith handmade guitar because I went through a stage of not liking Les Paul style guitars anymore... Would do anything to get it back, but unfortunately it was one of a kind :( Might commission Gordon Smith to build me another one, but it will have to be a long way off in the future when I have more disposable income
Feels like a big middle finger from Fender to those of us who payed extra for these features on the US or Vintera Il lines. As an owner of both, l'm not too thrilled at Fender for offering the same features after the fact for a fraction of the price.
I have some regrets of selling things, like an ibanez LP and a jcm800 non master volume. nearly sold my current amp when i bought a headrush. glad i didn't, got rid of the headrush and went back to real amp. as for modelling, i recon the boss pedal, ir loader or what ever it's called would be as far as i go in that world again. as a back up or practice tool.
I don't know if guitar-centric music will ever come back around to the mainstream. Unless there comes a way to truly bypass the few conglomerates that control the music industry that is more interested in easily-produced music made to be digestible for the masses (i.e. Taylor Swift), I just don't see another rock/blues revolution happening. The last one was 30+ years ago.
I recently sold my Ibanez 7 string that I had modified. I sold it for an Epiphone Firebird, which I love and it sounds fantastic. But I wanted to buy my Ibanez back, but some swine bought it before I could buy it back? I really like the black Mustang, and I haven't got a Jazzmaster, so I'd like one of them!
Fender currently remind me of Gibson prior to bankruptcy. A confusing product offer full of overlapping segmentation. So much on offer that it’s confusing and alienating. The advert for the new ones is bloody awful as well.
Would love to have an ITB podcast to listen to in the car!
Thanks so much for the support. I uploaded this to iTunes and Spotify, so it should show up if it hasn't already. :)

Can’t speak for the lefties, but the righty Pro ii is the only strat I truly love playing after many many fails.
Your programs are always fresh. Much appreciated.
I ordered the Player 2 lefty white tele as my first electric guitar. Looking forward to getting it in October. :D
As a lefty I imagine it would be more difficult to sell a nice guitar. I’d go for the 50th anniversary strat if I was you😊
I remember that strat! It's the one that introduced me to the Zexcoil pickups, which I have in two axes. One of which has sadly just sold, but a man must do what he must do sometimes hahaha
The player 2 Mustang
w/o trem would be great with medium flats.
Followed your channel since the beginning. GSS are my very favourite videos. 😊😊 Always tune in for the latest info.
But, tbh, you can really make them sound the same by tweaking the knobs 🤷🏽♂️
Glad to see you here, again!
Yep there are so many guitar review channels now, heaps of click-bait too. I think most guitarists can relate to you, which is a point of difference.
I sold my 50th anniversary Strat last year for all the same reasons you sold yours. That was my holy grail guitar and I would buy one again
Good show. Will look for you on the podcast.
They are also releasing weight relief chambered models in September according to Andertons which interests me greatly.
Have enjoyed all you do.. keep it up please.. You are the reason I bought a guitar.
@@petersouthwell5971
Agreed on all of your points.
Most of us are chasing sounds that are 60 years old. And theres still room for improvement in modelling. Quite crazy isnt it!
Bought a TS-9, had for 7 years or so, sold it, 2 years later bought another one, sold it withing 6 months and a Digitech chorus the same thing.
There is more of the Player series coming out later in the year including more left hand models and chambered mahogany bodies. Saw in on Andertons channel.
WHY DIDN'T FENDER INCLUDE BASSES FOR THE LEFTIES?!
Great content… thanks Shane
Great channel on gear review always informative with some awesome playing 👍🇺🇸🙏
I saw the “upgrades” in features for the new Player II. Not feeling it other than colors. Now bring in locking tuners, roasted maple necks, and stainless steel frets….. then you’ll have a real upgrade.
Sold my big babel Taylor when I bought my 214c, re purchase it 1 year later... then sold it again as I never used it
As our experience evolves, we can better appreciate the qualities that we desire that might not have been evident to us duing a more chaotic time.
You are my favorite reviewer. Thanks.
Eventually I might change them out for real single coils but they’re completely fine for now
We miss the podcast Shane!
I hope they put proper lefty pots in the player2s
Fender are usually pretty good with that these days, did you find them reverse wound or was the taper wrong?
Shane has a great question - if it’s just acting in a reverse manner, that is an easy fix. You could swap the outer 2 lugs and the pot will work in the correct manner
@@intheblues My experience. The player, player + American Original and the Vintage II have righty pots wired backwards so the rotation is correct but the taper is at the wrong end. The Pro 2 has proper lefty (reverse taper) pots.
Great stuff Shane I’ve always been a fan ..I just got an Eastman t486 and am very impressed with it will you take a look at them please ? Your the best 👌👍
Thanks for watching, listening, and supporting the channel. Check the timestamps for each section if you want to find a particular section of the podcast. It's been a while since I did one of these and it's good to be back 🙂

Player Two is a nice comeback, rosewood boards should always be available…
I would say modelers are probably going in the direction of Impulse Response amps and FX…. Taking that same concept of creating speaker can IR’s, I believe that’s the only way forward
Installed vintage tuners, vintage bridge, and rolled my edges all by myself since I bought the original player years ago… smh
Shout Out from Florida Shane ✝️👍🤙✌️
Grab the guitar. It’s calling you for a reason. Worst case scenario, you sell it again for the last time (maybe 😂).
Love the show. Keep up the great work.
Fender if you are listening, none of the offsets in the Player II lines are left-handed! THE ONLY NEW non-US OFFSET FENDER IN LEFT-HANDED IS THE JAG-STANG. just wtf, can we get some other guitars besides teles and strats? What about all those Jags and Mustangs Kurt Cobain used to play? Letting us Lefties down
What do you think about the chambered body options? I’m looking forward to those
I actually kinda like that Aged Cherry Burst.
Doubtful.
One of the best channels on CZcams!!! Hands down!!
And hello from Houston, TX
Thanks, Glen!
I don't see the Strat Player II lefty in black anywhere! was the screenshot taken from the Australian Fender site?
I have some regrets of selling things, like an ibanez LP and a jcm800 non master volume. nearly sold my current amp when i bought a headrush. glad i didn't, got rid of the headrush and went back to real amp. as for modelling, i recon the boss pedal, ir loader or what ever it's called would be as far as i go in that world again. as a back up or practice tool.
Oh that blue on a jazzmaster now it’s time for a new guitar
I’ve learned to make what I have work. Guitars are fading. But they’ll make a comeback when music is guitar-centric again.
The best value Fender was the Classic Player series which came with American made pickups and V shaped necks
