I worked for a company years back, we had this one lady call in freaking out that he 3 year old ac wasn't working. She made such a big deal, they sent me out that day to take a look. Her friend/ handyman built a fully enclosed box around it, because she didn't like the look of it. I'm not joking, literally not one vent hole and door always closed. They argued with me for an hour that I was absolutely wrong and that wasn't the cause of her issues. It was a hot day and the unit was tripping in high discharge. She then (while I was standing there) called into my office to tell them I was wrong and that we needed to send a different tech. The owner called me and told me to leave. We never did work with her again

Years ago we did a new install of a carrier infinity system. Worked great. Next day they called and said it wasn't working and were all pissed off. I got out and the wife had put up trellis and plants against the condenser coil. Completely blocked air flow. I ripped it all out and stacked it about 10 feet away. Had the system running perfectly. When she got home she called the shop all upset I had ripped out her plants. We told her she could have her plants or she could have AC. And we did charge for the service call.

I had a call at a grocery store where the customer wanted me to replace the water filters for their convection steam oven. They were located up 20 feet in a crawl space. I found that the only way to get to them was to walk across the top of the wood fired pizza oven that was covered with 6 inches of sand for insulation. Then I would have to jump a 3 foot crevasse to land on a ledge. I told them it was unserviceable. They said the last guy did it. I said I hope you still have his number.

Yeah, went to a call a month ago and was met by the “I went to school for Hvac, but didn’t finish” guy. After he followed me around trying to tell me how to do my job, I diagnosed a bad defrost board. He then informed me that the outside unit had nothing to do with the inside unit. I looked at him with a smile and told him “ Obviously you know how to do this and you no longer in need of my services” I packed up my stuff and left. His wife called me 10 minutes later begging me to return and letting me know she kicked him out the house until I leave. I went and grabbed a board and had her up and going.

@@Straight_White_Fatherly_Figure You'd be surprised how many people that work on aircraft don't know Jack about working on other stuff. @@414Chevy Years ago I got called out to a fireplace that wouldn't fire and client was an electrical engineer. I know because upon entering it was something like "Hi, I'm mr smith, my fireplace is broken. I know its not the electronics because I'm an electrical engineer". I nodded and smiled, opened up the panel on his fireplace as he went on and on about how he had tried to fix it, and had gone over the wiring schematic and did I want to see the schematic and it must be this or that. I politely declined as I looked underneath. I almost immediately noticed one of the wiring harnesses was plugged into the wrong part of the burner control module. So I unplugged it (as he watched), plugged it into the correct place, turned his fireplace on and said OK, well it's fixed. I think the phrase is Humble Pie? His wife absolutely loved it.

I’m an electrician, around here we call those people “helicopters”. One of my good friends owns an HVAC company here. Awhile back, we were on a new residential construction job, the homeowner was a helicopter, and was driving everyone up the wall. Nice guy, but would worry the hair off a frog. He was staring down the trim carpenter questioning everything. The old trim carpenter finally had enough, came down off his ladder, got right up in the guys face and said “One of us is leaving, who’s it gonna be?” It was the homeowner.😂😂😂

I worked in hvac for 10 years, I favored installation. I always considered the service work and maintenance to come after years of operation. I always placed units in locations, so that replacing part wouldn't be a nightmare to the service techs. They loved me. For example, placing a line set off to the side, so that if an evap coil had to be replaced, it would be easy. I saw a lot of idiocy, guys doing quick and dirty. I caught greaf for not being quicker, but nobody was having to go back in my work. I left the industry behind, because of too much toxicity, young men not wanting to learn, not investing it their job. I do some hvac with a friend occasionally, it's night and day different.

No offense but there have been many days I was wishing to be in an auto shop drinking a coffee shooting the shit with a coworker while turning a wrench. You guys got it good. I promise you that. Not all of us are residential techs. We got the same breaker bars and Milwaukee high torque impacts you guys do. Except they’re not in our tool box next to the drinking fountain lol they’re just strapped to our backs while we hike or climb or crawl.. I commend residential techs tho. @@jayquick6520 That's not always the case for a mechanic. It depends on what you're working on. If you're working for a dealership or a decent second hand shop yes. But if you're doing alot of road calls along with the shop jobs you tend to have tools all over the place. Working on forklifts is a job I definitely don't miss. You have one break down in the freezer that's maintained at a minimum negative 10 degrees within about a minute and a half you're beard and mustache are already frozen and you have to go climb up the mast on the piece of shit and either replace a switch or find the wire broken or rubbing the master and fix it. By the time you come out of there you're entire body fucking hurts. Or you get a condensation in a switch or something and it just refuses to act right and of course this is after they've let it sit back there all day. Because they won't say anything to you until they need it moved. Gets so old it's not funny.

Ran into an ignitor issue, took it out to clean and verify, but didn't a ring of some sort came out and boy, did me and a few techs have fun trying to figure that one out.
Great guys that took care of me.. it took several hours of swapping stuff in and out, cleaning the burners, etc. Finally replaced the ignitor and it worked. The initial tech was somewhat newer, diagnosed as the board, so I swapped that out before the backup senior techs came out. After explaining all I did, and them triple checking the wiring diagram. I think they realized I wasn't an idiot, and I very much appreciated them to the tune of a large cash tip because I know they heard "homeowner tried to service unit" and just wanted to run.

I was in business for 24 years before retiring 2 years ago. I learned early on after getting burned a few times that I would have to learn first how to screen calls and know just from conversation whether to take certain calls and also knowing when to walk away and do it before wasting any of my time in order to be profitable. It served me well and I was good at it. I could read a person almost immediately in whether to put any effort into a job or even travel to the job. I realize this gives you content for video but had it been me I would have felt her out in conversation first and from that would have known she was looking for a gas and go only and probably didnt have the cash for anything else. Then after seeing where the air handler was I would have bolted. In fact I would have never gone. I seldom did work for poor people unless it was a charity project trying to get them some air or heat and I limited those. My house was built in the 50s and it never had force air of any sort until 2005. There simply was no place to put an HVAC unit in the house that could easily be serviceable. So, we got one of the all in one units that sit outside and because we had a crawl space, the only part of the HVAC system that's in the house is the ducting. If the outside unit needs serviced, just unbolt the lid and all of it is right there. So far I have done all the servicing to it like replacing the capacitor once and cleaning the condenser coil about every two years and the evaporator core only needed it once. Always have used a filter for the return and changed it in the beginning of fall and spring. Basic maintenance will go a long way.
This lady needs to have that doorway taken out and widened and simply put up a curtain or something so that the HVAC can be serviced. Looks like a fairly new unit.

The way she was hedging around, she already knew there was a leaky coil and thought you would just say it needed a shot of freon! You could see the new screws where someone "recently" removed that door frame and installed that unit (within last year or so) and it was probably a used unit some "friend of a friend " pawned off on her from when they did a change out!!

That charging it and go routine is illegal with a leak that large venting freon into the open atmosphere and can get you a hefty fine especially since he's posting these videos online!! Once he knows how substantial a leak is then he's legally obligated if he doesn't change out the coil and just charges unit, and here's the key word, knowing it will just vent out!! If it is just a small amount over a year's time and the leak is miniscule, not verifiable by detection equipment then yes EPA will allow to charge and go but not in this case!!
