I am planning on starting a Patreon myself. I agree with one small tier. I don't like denying a supporter something over a couple bucks. It also feels like adding another layer of work figuring out what goes in what tier ND feeling pressure to produce to or three levels of products.
Exactly! I think having multiple tiers puts people off sometimes, because they feel like, if they go for the tier they can afford, they're missing out on the really good content. In the long run, I think you can get more patrons to join up and stick around with a simple, accessible tier. I'll add more tiers eventually, but I want that main tier to give people everything they really need.
I legit would love to do what you do, as far as sharing content. However, I’ve never been good at adventure design. I’m pretty decent at custom species and player options, but I have no idea how you make your stuff look so good.
Working out the physical designs took me a while, but once you get a template for pages and basic layouts that you're happy with, you can slot everything into that and it has nice, uniform quality to it. I do my page layout with Inkarnate, because in addition to being a good map-making tool, it's surprisingly great for placing text and page elements. Muck about with their Parchment World assets and you'll be able to make some cool looking stuff!
Yeah this is awesome. Glad you are growing now making some money off of it. You clearly put a lot of work into your ideas and writing and it definitely shows. The patreon is awesome and well worth it. You single handedly expanded my campaign possibilities massively.
If you want to spread the word faster maybe try getting some collabs with some bigger channels. Maybe ask if a play group can do one of your one shots or something like that?
You deserve many more viewers and patreons. ✌
Collaboration is 100% the way to go, it's an area I've not really explored yet but one I'd like to jump into. As well as maybe growing the audience, it would just be cool to connect with other creators on here. I'll be keeping that in mind going forward!

Thanks for the insight! Looking into becoming a paid DM and this was great for my thoughts going forward.
I really want to try making a go of this myself but I'm finding myself heavily torn. I used to play 5e but have since moved on to Pathfinder 2e. I'd love to make general videos about GM tips that are system agnostic, but I'm not sure if missing out on 'D&D' or '5e' as keywords would be shooting myself in the foot and stop me from ever reaching a broad audience.
I've always been on the fence on making a youtube for dnd content as a DM, I love the game and want to give my homebrew content out to people as well and wondered about monetization. This video really helps thank you for all your help man, keep doing what you do I appreciate it! Also is there an easy way to set up videos in the youtube short setting? would love to know!
I think that you only having a baseline for Patreon is brilliant. I don't support anyone on that platform because of the tier system they always have ... I'm more inclined to support your work when you don't seem greedy. I'll be joining you in a couple weeks! Love the videos
That's very kind of you to say, mate! You'd be very welcome over on Patreon, BUT I should warn you, I actually WILL be adding extra tiers later this year (probably around November). My monthly projects have gradually become so large in scale (the one I'm posting in November will be close to 100 pages and is costing me a bit over $1400 in original artwork) that I've decided to add additional tiers to try and make it more financially viable for me. The current 3 dollar tier will still get weekly encounters and Patreon-only videos, but the bigger, more expensive pieces (campaign settings, mostly) will be on a 6 dollar tier. All previously posted stuff will still be available to everyone, of course, but I want to be as transparent as possible, so someone like yourself coming over for the 3 dollar tier isn't messed about. There'll be a big announcement video about it in the near future, but whatever happens, I'll keep posting my CZcams content for everyone.
I understand that... And for more work, more compensation. But it still doesn't sound as ridiculous as some others I've seen. Six bucks a month is still a great deal for what you promise to share with us. And you're keeping your baseline tier. I say go for it! And I'll be joining soon, maybe wait til that $6 tier comes out

Really enjoyed this! I’m someone who’s also trying to make dnd content into a full time job and it feels super overwhelming. What would your advice be on trying to grow any channel? (Besides just posting)

Could you make a buy a year tier?
I'm thinking about starting something, but I don't think I would be able to be constant with content, how do you get ideas for your videos, and how do you know which one is better than the others to make a video about?
To come up with ideas initially, I try to just think about particular areas of the game that I feel confident in (combat or world building, for example) and then try to work out how I've gotten better at that stuff over time. Then I try to distill that into a few key tips or steps that other DMs can use.
Once I start scripting the video, that's when I realize if it has potential or not. The one thing I never want to do is put out a video for the sake of it, so as I'm writing down the three main tips for speeding up combat (for example), I'm asking myself "Is this applicable to other DMs? Is this actionable advice?" I often ditch video ideas about ten minutes after I start scripting them, because I realize that my ideas aren't useful enough yet, but then I'll come back to those topics later when I have something better to say.
You'll find that once you start making videos though, you'll have new ideas for topics popping into your head all the time - having ideas is almost like a habit you just build over time.
