To quote Anakin Skywalker: I don't like Sand.
I'm right there with you regarding the rating system that's so popularized right now. It's way too inflated!
I would not call it inflated. Not useful? Probably! But definitely different than your expectations. A lot of people use one decimal point on a ten point scale. They are essentially grading school papers, which is a rating that new people will understand without explanation. Most of us in the US are used to A (9.0-10.0) being great, B (8.0-8.9) being good, C (7.0-7.9) being average, D (6.0-6.9) being bad, and F (0.0-5.9).
If someone outside the hobby watched their first review of a game and it got a 6, they'd think it's clearly a bad game.
If you want to use the BGG system, or your own, then you just need to be clear about how you arrived at your rating.
@@BrandonGraham that’s a good point! Hit the nail on the head regarding the school paper analogy. I like how channels like Shelfside stick to a more literal scale. On a ten-point scale, a 5 should be considered average but I know culturally that’s not how it’s interpreted 🤣
I agree on the clarification, though.
Everything is a 7-10 and everything under, in the words of every content creator, is "still a great game but just not for me . . . but you should buy it!"
I'd argue it's both useless and inflated and the inflation is a part of what makes it so damn useless. Kim gave it a four because she doesn't care if a publisher gets upset, that's her score. But it's pretty rare you'll find a big content creator with sponsorship and early game releases giving out anything under a 6. I mean, hell, it's like the ratting system is four-five numbers instead of 10 at this point.
@@TabletopTurtle 🤣🤣
Did you only play it with 2 players?
Yeah, after the fifth play we started exclusively playing it with two because we didn't feel the extra players added that much to our experience.
u2 would like GLow try Glow
We will give that one a look!
This particular video is very odd, I would never play 14 times a game I dislike specially a 120 mins game
I would hope that's what reviewers do to get the best knowledge of the game but I doubt most do. We do . . .Sadly in this case
The Devir games I’ve played have felt like school book euros kinda - although the cogs turn perfectly, they haven’t surprised nor excited me one bit… I guess your review confirms this because this looks just as generic as The Red Cathedral and White Castle… They work just fine but meh
A lot of their games seem to appeal to a large group of people. We actually do enjoy White Castle, but I can't see many of their games being someone's favorite game of all time.
Devir’s Lacrimosa is a solid 10 for us. It went from 7 to 8 to 9 to 10. The possibilities for strategies just keep unfolding
Tough but probably right!
Sounds like this game was coarse, rough, irritating, and got everywhere.
Better in someone else's collection instead of my underwear.
Oh bummer! I signed up for a play of this at GenCon. Now I'm less excited
Don't be! Always be excited to play and at least you get to test it out and see if it's fun for you.
Nice review. Never had heard of the game but it sounds like randomness makes the gameplay way less fun. The fact it also comes off as boring in general really hurts it. I do like the companion art though.
Borrowed this game to play at Geekway. Managed to slog our way through setup and the rulebook. Then we kind of looked at each other and realized that at this point neither of us was interested enough to commit a couple hours to play it on top of the time already spent. Seems a mechanically sound game, but as you say, BORING!
I wish we could bail like that. I always feel like after I'm done reading a manual I HAVE to keep playing or I wasted that time reading, even though I'm wasting more time playing! haha
I'll never understand how the hype train works. A lot of people seemed to be excited for this, but I looked at its name, and the cover, and was immediately uninterested. Nothing I saw on BGG or any of the artwork grabbed me either. Thanks for your honesty in the review.
Who doesn't love sand!?
Ill never understand why people think this game was number one i much prefer Book Of TIme which was at #50 when this was at #1 never had interest in owning Sand
People love what's new!
Wait! What do you mean « 5 is average « ?! It makes no sense! We know anything below an 8 is an absolute waste of Money!!
Unwatchable… UNWATCHABLE!
So true!
