Economists should be able to give advice to address the disease instead of giving advice that treats the headache with panado. If all prominent economists like Jacob Mazalale, Masanjala and you Professor Betcheni Tchereni started giving advice to increase production, we would not need devaluation as you have said. But such advice to increase production is absent so far.
I think these guys try their best to give the advice to our leaders or whoever is concerned by they(leaders) choose to give a deaf year to the advice hence we experience no change economicallly.

I don't know if this guy is really an economist. How can devaluation stabilize the economy in a country where you import almost everything. If the shelves of shops are empty how can they be filled up after devaluation yet we almost have nothing to export?
Devaluation cannot bring about economic stabilization per se. Devaluation is an effect of the mess that was present to begin with and it was bound to happen sooner or later. What matters now is that we produce to substitute imports and also increase export revenue.

This devaluation was an avoidable but this economist is trying to tell us the devaluation brought dollars into the country? How? Or the ECF loan had a condition of devaluation? If so why demanding devaluation when they want to give us their money? In other ways they want malawians to access few goods from outside while bank has gained more.
We are exploited by the IMF and the Word Bank and its sad. There always preconditions attached. But to be honest we let ourselves become prey to such institutions. We had no import cover, no austerity measures, no productive industries etc... These are national failures which has led us to become prey to foreign debt and more. We need to change our mindset

The associate Prof seems to be intelligent and very concerned about all mess happening in this country but I wonder why such people don't show up for such brilliant ideas and advices to those people in authority? If u want us to believe ur words u must work up and start telling the authorities to do things in the right ways please otherwise we'll not be convinced
The politicians from all parties don’t take advice from these economists because their aims are different. The politicians are focused on enriching themselves and winning the next election whilst the economists push for investment into production instead of importing everything
With all due respect professor Varoufakis didn’t want to accept the Troika bailout, actually the Syriza government ran on the promise to say “no” to any other loan until debt restructuring was achieved, as you obviously remember from working papers such as the ones published 11th May 2015, 11th June 2015, basically the Memorandums of Understanding (1-3) and IMF Country Report No. 16/130… you catch my drift. Greece’s clash with the Troika was an inevitable one due to the political nature of Europe. He lacked the independence the RBM enjoys.

This interview was necessary. Here are my observations taken from the discussion.
1. The associate professor has tried his best not to be seen that he is also a politician. The guy is a politician and is in support of the nonsense of this leadership. we can not have the group of economics in a country like this who are seen advising the central bank on devaluation instead of production.
2. I also want to agree with him the associate professor on issues of making this county a production site. they are a number of things that we were supposed to ban a country from importing. as a country we can not be ordering toothpicks, second hand underwear.
3. This country has to be serious on agriculture. for us to encourage the local farmers, we are supposed to ban other farm produce from importing like Irish, rice, fruits, fresh fish etc. so that as a country we can be forced to start producing the same with exact quality and quantity. we should reach a point where other countries can like Malawi taste.
4. The set up of our economy favors those that receive more money than those receive the peanuts. how can we say the president, ministers and MPs be allowed to import some things on duty free yet they are the ones who uses the taxpayers money more? yet they squeeze someone to pay tax on almost every his/her expenditures though is on minimum wage of fifty thousand kwacha, do we think we can run this country with domestic income yet those with big salaries are waved from the taxes?
5. the Austerity measures that the president announced has not included on his local trips. should we say president trips locally does not consume money worthy of saving? He also announced to cut the fuel allowances of ministers and others while his salary and allowances are not touched.
6. This country was supposed to stop AIP with immediate effect not because is not providing benefits to the citizen, but because its where much corruption is taking place. this country needs a whole turnover in how we are doing things not only by words but by actions. the government was supposed to identify farmers who are able to grow maize, sugarcane, beans, soya, etc. on a large scale of over 25hectares of single crop. These farmers should have their own financial muscle which will help them manage their farm(s) without subsidy and the only help/incentive which government can do is to let them import fertilizer without Tax. All subsistence farmers should be able to access the fertilizer on a common cheep market price.
7.The president was supposed to bring back all diplomats and choose again who is going back after their performance has been evaluated and we have seen their impact to the relationships and economy of impact affected by their stay. some offices were supposed to be closed for now so that we can lessen the dollar burden we send to them.
8. We have organic tangerines which are produces in abundance during winter season from Mwanza and Neno district yet no government has ever promoted export of those fruits. we could introduce machines and make 100% juice from them instead of importing the GMO juices from elsewhere.
