  • Thin lake ice is a huge danger for all outdoor enthusiasts. First and most important ice safety rule: Ice is never 100% safe! In this video, I am showing you 4 ways to check the ice thickness and speak about 4 more ice safety rules to minimize the risks while moving on frozen water.
Last year we had a perfect start to winter. The cold temperatures came before the snow. So the lake ice formed by freezing the clear water. The so-called black ice was formed. The strongest ice ever.
This year, however, everything looked quite different. After my return from the CDT there was already a lot of snow but only thin lake ice. With these isolating snow quantities, the lake ice will remain dangerous still long into the winter.
For me with my sled dogs, for ice skaters and snowmobilers, for ice fishermen and skiers a big danger. Let's go. I'll show you how I minimize the risks of a break-in through the thin ice!

This is an excellent safety video, Barbara. All snowmobiles should watch it. I won’t go on the ice until we have a foot of ice in front of our cabin. My husband checks it every year using an ice auger. Once it’s safe on our pond it’s safe everywhere because our pond freezes last. Important to know your pond (lake).

Yes, it is the main thing for safety in winter... without knowledge about your surroundings it is difficult to enjoy outdoor life... where do you have your cabin?

Lots of great info on ice, thanks for sharing! What kind of wildlife do you have up in the Swedish Lapland?

I was thinking of making a video about it one day... but there are bears, wolves, moose, reindeers, and most of the smaller mammals that you have in the northern part of the USA as well... no mountain lions though...

Are you on fresh water or salt water .

It is fresh water... I do not know the rules for salty water att all... i guess all needs to be stronger and thicker to be safe
