      Me too. It was so cool. Especially that double bass kicks. The fills fits perfectly to the song. Dirk is humble and smart musician.

    This guy did serious session work. He is a PROFESSIONAL drummer. He knows how to work out a songs structure. It's not AT ALL difficult to believe he's never heard the song and can work it out.

      @anti-ethniccleansing465 Před 10 měsíci +1

      It’s actually *extremely* difficult to believe that, because the song was such a massive hit on the top 100 Billboard chart for so bloody long that it was _everywhere_ people went in the States, and Megadeth hails from Los Angeles, which is ground zero for the music industry... Coincidentally, I used to work in it there when this song blew up.
      I saw them headline a show once, practically by accident, because of being given free tickets by either my label, or a friend’s label or a label I did moonlighting work for - I had wanted to go check out that show for one of the opening bands that I was super into, but ofc I stayed to see The Killers too.
      One will _STILL_ hear Mr. Brightside to this day while just going to a store to go shopping for groceries or w/e, ffs. Go to a bar? You’ll hear it. Go to a gig/show in L.A.? You’ll hear it being played before/after the show starts/ends or in between the opening bands and headliners, etc.. Riding in a car with someone playing L.A.’s only modern rock radio station (106.7/KROQ)? You’ll hear it! In fact, it would have been unavoidable for a super long time there with it getting spun every hour.
      Like you know too, the dude does session work for different types of bands on different record labels - there’s no doubt he was most definitely exposed to it. He even admits that not only does he know the band’s name, but that it’s quite probable that he’s heard the song before because there was a familiarity to it (whether it was just playing in the background somewhere or whatnot).
      Regardless, I super dug his version, and imo his drumming stands right up next to the original version as being outstanding - they just had a different flavor. Dirk’s progressive tempo build up was the shit, with the cherry on top being the double bass kicking frenzy near the end.

      Regardless, the song was (and still is) *everywhere* when he moved to the US, and all my previous examples of how he would have been exposed to it still apply.

      Larnell Lewis did the same for Enter Sandman except he did it in his head, didn’t write it down, but rather talked it out and “air drummed” as he started anticipating the parts.
      He said he never heard it and people said it’s “impossible “ but dude is a jazz fusion drummer who grew up in gospel music. He didn’t even know Drake (fellow Canadian) because he was offered a tour drum position and after receiving the material, declined, not “agreeing” with the lyrics. So someone like that I can totally buy he never intentionally listened to it. You may hear something on the radio as you pass by and not pay attention to it. But then you would still not know the song.

    I love your honest opinion, it's very balanced, unbiased. You respected his craft but also you didn't fangirl too much, you took a technical and professional standpoint using your background/experience which was tasteful. Thank you for the reaction. I too had the giggles when he changed the vibe of the song that I listened to 1000 times. I love the original to death, but his interpretation was also very beautiful. Great react!

    Lol! I didn’t realize that Stuart Smalley has a CZcams channel. This guy is so cringe with the non-ironic “you matter” pep talk in the beginning of the video, and then I saw it again in his “About” section. 😬🤦‍♀️
    Gen Z is extremely worrisome (as are millennials). This isn’t normal. Stuart Smalley was a _JOKE_ in the 90s - it’s legit _CRAZY_ we have people talking like that seriously only a couple decades later!

    • @walterooski
      @walterooski  Před 10 měsíci +3

      I’m 32, homie. Not Gen Z.
      I don’t care if it’s not normal to spread positivity. I don’t care that you think it’s cringe. I’m not trying to earn your approval - you clearly know how important you are to the world. Not everybody does and, frankly, I think I could be doing worse things with my time than trying to uplift somebody. If non-ironic people talks of encouragement are worrisome, I think the world has bigger issues.
      All that being said, thanks for going out of your way to say something, good or bad. Live the best life.

      @@walterooski
      I intentionally included millennials in my comment for a reason, my guy.
      The reason you have turned what was a _JOKE COMEDY SKETCH_ in the 90s into serious speech is because of the ridiculous teaching millennials began getting in school, where everyone was awarded with a participation trophy and told how “special” they are, despite not accomplishing anything noteworthy or special. They don’t even have to put in effort or _TRY,_ but they’ll get awards regardless! 🙄🤪
      We knew right away back then how disastrous that was going to be to raise kids like that - it was alarming that the gov’t chose to do that in their school systems.
      It created a sick entitled/self-focused/self-obsessed/self-important/self-absorbed/vain mentality in millennials and Gen Z. Lol I am not “important to the world,” and neither are you. The world goes on with or without us in it. There are many billions of humans and countless species. The world doesn’t care about the rando John Smith was that died in 1623, just like it doesn’t care about each and every single ant that’s ever lived. My loved ones matter to me just like I matter to my loved ones, but that’s it. And your loved ones are all that you matter to as well. To think total strangers care about you or I is warped thinking.
      Now I can contribute something with my work/talent that has the ability to stick around for awhile after I die, but when humans die off, so will the value of what I created/left behind. Because, like I said, the world goes on without us and doesn’t care.
      Humbleness is a virtue - to think “the whole world” thinks “I’m _IMPORTANT,”_ or _YOU_ are, is that vain, self-absorbed mindset that screams detached from reality/delusional.

      P.S. I forgot to add in my reply: Lose the cringe hair twirling too. Do you even realize you’re doing that? Honest to god, I have never in my life seen a guy twirl their hair before. What in the fuck.
      But this is a relatively good video, if I close my eyes and don’t look at you twirling your hair or whispy ‘stache lol. You had an actual reaction to this drumming vid, and interjected actual substance with your commentary, unlike the other random channels I checked out who “reacted” to Dirk’s kick-arse performance by being lumps on a log and just saying “that was cool” at the end of it.
