Sacred Music at Notre Dame is an interdisciplinary program that aims to lead the international conversation about the arts and the sacred, promoting the University's mission to promote the highest standards of teaching and research, service and community. Professors from the Department of Music work together with those in Theology and other subjects in our Master of Sacred Music, with concentrations in Conducting, Organ, and Voice, currently housed in the Department of Theology; and in our new Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting and in Organ, housed in the College of Arts and Letters, University of Notre Dame. Areas of complementary specialization (with certificates in some cases) include music and interdisciplinarity, early music, liturgical arts, ritual studies and world music. Our students serve as interns throughout the Notre Dame campus, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (where a magnificent new organ is now in the planning) and in local parishes and congregations. Every student receives a tuition scholarship and a generous stipend, and many opportunities to play our magnificent organs and conduct and sing with our choirs. Foundational to this work is the special partnership we have with the Debartolo Center for the Performing Arts.
Sacred Music at Notre Dame, its faculty, staff, and students, work tirelessly to build up the ever-expanding field of sacred music, both for its intrinsic worth and for its influence on all the arts, sacred and secular, in our culture and beyond. Notre Dame University is a place where innovative developments occur, where the musical treasures of the Western world are performed and studied, where the best of new works are promoted and commissioned, and the sacred musical traditions of the world are honored and explored.
