  • My fourteen year-old Siamese cat, Sing Sing, has been a regular guest in so many of my videos, and he's beloved by foster kitties and human guests alike for his outgoing and friendly personality. No matter how small a foster kitten is, I know I can trust Sing Sing to be gentle and caring to it as though he were a mother cat. He also engages in playtime with the other cats, keeps us company while we're cooking (you know, because we might drop something tasty on the floor), and makes every day special with his optimistic charm.
    In this video, you will meet Sing Sing and learn his story, from when I found him sick and abandoned at the shelter to the time that he got out of the house and was missing for a month! You'll also see some of his quirky characteristics, from playing the piano to his enthusiasm for snacking on vegetables.
    There will never be another cat quite like Sing Sing, and I cherish every day he's with us. Thanks to everyone who asks about him, and enjoy the video!

    We have a stray Siamese that I have been feeding for over a year now. She is unfixed and had a litter of kittens in our wood pile behind the RV. I successfully rescued all 4 kittens, and found homes for 2 of them. We named the Siamese cat Cinderella. We have 4 inside dogs that have only seen the cats as they chase them out of the yard. Once we knew Cinderella had kittens, our daughters friends cat had kittens so we took 2 of them, Bella and Pip. Our dogs did amazing having cats in the house. It was a slow process to catch all the kittens because I didn’t want to traumatize them by using a trap that automatically shut. I ended up rigging up a regular cage with a string attached to the door and would wait hours for them to show up so I could catch them. We even moved our security cameras so I could see when they were coming. We named the 2 kittens we kept, Luna and Lucky. Lucky was the last kitten I caught and was very feral. She is doing amazing and does well when she’s out of the cage. She is currently still spending a lot of time in the cage. We transformed our living room into a cat haven playground. Out 2 large front windows is where we have the big cage set up, and we combined 2 large cages to make 1 huge cage for Lucky.

      @@KittenSchool I have been contacting our local cat rescues and humane society about the TNR for Cinderella and also to get her medical care, but no one ever responds back to us. There’s not many options for vet services either, all the shelters are full of animals being dumped from people getting them over the lockdowns, so now all the shelters are overwhelmed. Cinderella lost an eye and it doesn’t seem to be completely healing and I think she’s pregnant again. Not sure what else to do other than continue feeding her and if we find kittens again, to rescue them. We are doing our best and learning as we go.

    I LOVED this !! You are blessed to have such a wonderful loving, caring cat. I foster failed a little 4 week old Siamese this summer. He had been thrown in a dumpster( !!!! 😭) when some kind soul found him and brought him to the local shelter. He was so battered and dehydrated and had a URI. My first experience with my own cat let alone a sick one. Well he stole my heart. He is 5 months now and the sweetest little guy. Cuddles with me all night. He is fearful of a lot of things but hopefully in time that will get better. I took in another foster ..a Norwegian Forest Cat.. and these two are the best of friends. The Wegie wants to rule the world lol…and is helping my Siamese to be a little more brave 💗🤗.

    I love all kitties but I especially love the traditional Siamese...one decided to adopt me but I was living in an apt where cats were not allowed. My daughter who rescues cats took her in and we were able to find her a wonderful home through another rescue organization who vetted the owners thoroughly. She was my first of that breed and I fell in love with her immediately..It was hard to let her go, but she went to a couple who were in the 50's and loved Siamese cats and they'd lost their girl kitty..they were thrilled to get her and now she has a wonderful life.

    Thanks so much for the Sing-Sing video. It answered a lot of questions I had about him. I'm not sure we ever had a cat quite as remarkable as Sing-Sing and never one that will each vegetables and fruit. Many years ago, a cat we had that was close to Sing-Sing in personality got out an open window during a windy day when a screen blew out. We were both at work. We came home and found him gone, but he'd hidden in the bushes in front of the house, came when called, and ran right back indoors. All our indoor kitties, including the adopted stray, run away from the door if its open. They show no interest in going out. I don't know what any of them would do if they did get out. I'm inclined to think they'd stick close to he house until we rescued them. I hope we never find out.

      Hi Helena, Yeah, a Siamese that somehow isn't a Siamese is just a breeder's issue. But if it Walks like a Duck and Talks Like a Duck, then it is a Siamese. Yeah, one of my favorite Ferals of all times was Bloggie, which started as Blotchy, clearly a half siamese with blue eyes. She had a litter of ALL Orange Cats. My Old Foxxy Buddy with Blue, really, Grey Eyes, is part siamese and that gave him a Tawny Tabby Coat of the softest fur... he looks like a little Lioness. But, yeah, if your cat is not for Breeding then your Cat IS what it looks like.

    • @KittenSchool
      @KittenSchool  Před 2 lety +3

      A lot of kitten litters that have Siamese also have black. I think there's a genetic correlation in the siamese markings and the black coat. I agree with Scott, if it looks Siamese, I call it Siamese! I am sure Sing Sing is a mixed breed, too, but he's my Siamese prince! He won't make it into a cat show but that's just fine with me.

    Video idea - I think Batty and another kitty prefer to be outdoor cats and mostly live in your neighbor's yard. Maybe you could check in on them and show them doing their thing outside. I think some people find outdoor cats controversial, due to the many dangers in most suburban environments, but there is a quality of life difference for the cat. I think it's something to be weighed based on the particular circumstances and whether the cat's already lived outdoors in the past. It would be interesting to get your take, but I also understand if it's something you don't want to touch.

    • @pocketpanther5926
      @pocketpanther5926 Před 2 lety +1

      Also any tips on how to make wearing a collar more palatable to an adult cat who has never worn one? I'm certain she will hate it.
      I have gotten her into a harness several times, but it's always a dicey situation to put it on. The excitement of going outside makes her mostly forget about the harness. Id like her to wear a collar at all times because I can put a tiny BLE tracker on it, and if she were ever to escape like Sing Sing did, I could find her hiding spot. The range is only a couple hundred feet, but that would've made all the difference in your situation!

    • @KittenSchool
      @KittenSchool  Před 2 lety +1

      He goes crazy for bell pepper! It's hilarious, the other cats see him getting excited and run over and they are totally puzzled. I love the suggestion for Batty and Moonie. They are now mostly living with my neighbor, and she lets them insider her house every night to sleep. I see them every day but they prefer a quieter house, and my neighbor loves the company. Your right there's so much controversy about outdoor cats - people get upset that they kill birds (which no one likes), and there are a lot of dangers. I prefer all my cats inside, but a few were outdoor cats when I got them so they have to go out. They don't leave the yard, are too lazy to hunt birds, and we live on a quiet cul-de-sac, and they come in at sunset without fail. I will consider a video on the subject, thanks for the great idea!!!!

      I am going to try some of these vegetables/fruits with my kitty. I might be wrong, but I believe cats don't have taste buds for sweetness, so I think it might be mostly the texture that Sing Sing and other kitties enjoy. Anyone know what else in there they might be able to taste? They're natural carnivores, so I'm not sure if there's any evolutionary reason they'd be able to taste the other flavors humans do in vegetables or fruits.
      My kitty and former roommate's kitties that I've lived with in the past like to chew on plastic bags or thick plastic shrinkwrap e.g. if you buy a 24 pack of cans at Costco, the shrinkwrap around the box. They don't want to eat it, they just want to chew on it. And the thicker the better.
      I've, thus far, been unable to redirect my kitty's chewing inclinations to something healthier. I'm going to try vegetables, but let me know if you have any ideas!

      @pocketpanther5926 Před 2 lety

      Perhaps she's more familiar with dogs and thinks they need litter box training?
      I think kitten school has some earlier videos on stuff like litterbox issues if the kittens end up going outside the box. It's almost entirely instinctual though, so once the kittens are old enough to eliminate without stimulation, most will gravitate to a litterbox.
      Caroline also has a video on a cheap litter that she uses for kittens - clumping litter can be dangerous for very young kittens.

      If the Kittens are healthy than all they need is Hand Socialization. Don't make yourself a stranger. Pick them up a lot and give them hugs and kisses. Also, get friends and family to handle the kittens too, because if you want to find them forever homes it would be great if the kittens thought that ALL people are nice and not just yourself.

      @@sheilasmith1109 I think the sooner you start teaching them English the better. One of my Favorite Cats was a cat that ran away from a Nice Korean Lady and her Daughter, who must have been better Dog People, and that Cat loved me, but for YEARS would ignore everything I'd say... she thought it sounded like gibberish. So, yeah she was about 5 before she showed comprehension for phrases like "Jump Up", "I'm Sorry", "Come and Eat", and "I love you". Yeah, people think it sound odd, teaching your cats English, but it is a real thing. Little kids often come to my door and "meow" at my cats, like it is their own language (while cats will only Meow at their Mothers when they are kittens and at humans all their lives, but cats won't meow at other cats.). Well, I tell the kids "Speak English! They either already know it or they should".

    Caroline, I used to be able to find your old Blog that had your Three Part Series Story about Sing Sing getting Lost. Yeah, you still have a Kitten School Blog but I can't figure out how to access anything older than "recent". Really, I read that Story and I thought that it would have made a good Screen Play for a Movie that Cat People would flock to. but yeah, my Newest and Nicest Cat, Franky Blue Tux (looks like a French Chartreux but with Tuxedo Markings and he has a wisp of a Third Eye Marking, well, I thought I lost him. The evening before I opened the Wood Door and looked through the Screen Door to see if my car was still okay and then closed the Wood Door... enclosing Franky between the two doors. Yeah, back at my computer I heard some noises but with 5 cats there is always noise. But the next day, well, Franky wasn't there for the Breakfast Dishes. I thought I might have recently let him out as I went out to take out the trash, but, I would have seen him. When I remembered the night before, well, the Screen Door is not really a Screen, but a fine iron grill which has some holes in the bottom, but big enough for a cat to get through. He was out ALL NIGHT! Wow! I had to expand the search and out calling his name. Yeah, about the 3rd time I back tracked to my Apartments, I heard some kitten meowing. Now the funny thing about Franky, is he's like my old Big Bear the Silver Siamese who could go YEARS at a time without saying a word... I mean "meow". So I didn't know whether it was Franky or not but who else, right? Yeah, hearing aids aren't much for Directionality and so I had to triangulate but eventually I found him up on the side of the Exotic Tropical Plant Cliff (I live only 13 degrees above the Equator). Poor Franky. He must have been terrified with all the Boonie Dogs and mean un-neurtered tom cats and people. But he came down to meet me but not all the way down. I met him on the Loose Dirt Slope at the foot of the cliff. Well, Caroline, just a few years ago I was a Cripple, with two bad Hip Joints. but about 25 years ago I was a Marathoner and I would train by running up and down mountains, even in the Winter where I learned you can climb UP an icey slope easier than you can climb DOWN, because the Vectors of Force keep you planted going up, but going down, the forces want to just slip out from under you. So once I picked up Franky, I wondered what would happen if I picked up One Foot. So, I called for HELP from this High School Kid who was wasting time in the Stairwell. I had to explain to him that Old People will often holler for Help and the thing to do is run to help, and not ask questions from 20 yards away. I just needed him to spot for me. But Franky did not want anybody else getting involved. And he was Wiggling in my grip. So now I had to tell the Teenager to BACK OFF, but suddenly he was full of offers to help and advice, but "Please Be Quiet and Back Away". Finally I realized that an old tire lying at my feet could be stood up and used to support me like a Big Rubber Round Walking Cane. Then I took him upstairs to my apartment. He ate and then he SLEPT. It was a Bonding Adventure for both of us. Now, in our Quality Times I will say "Franky Franky Franky" with my voice low and trying to simulate Distance, like what he heard when I was calling him, and as taciturn as he usually is, he will reply with his Meow Meow Meow.... he remembers! But, yeah, when I thought he might have gotten lost, you know, cats ordinarily MAP their territory by doing full coverage walking around and sniffing everything, but if they are panicked then they just RUN and with no MAP they get lost, and can't find their way back. I was thinking that, well, 15 months since I didn't have Franky and my life was fine and I could go back to being just as Fine now, but, well, no... it would be life without that precious little Franky. Heck, I'm glad I didn't give up.

    Hi, I really admire your chanel and watched all your videos. I am from. Florida and wondering if you can offer any help with information on cat rescues. I have called around 30 places today and had no replies or answers, except 1 who wanted $500! We have an aggression issue with our dog after an accident and we are able to donate $100. He is only 6 months. Do you know of anyone we could call, I am so distraught that we can't get anyone to answer. It seems the only place that will help is the place they put most animals to sleep 😢 We have 4 kids 2 with special needs and our dog is there therapy dog. I am so distraught and lost. We are willing to drive anywhere!

      Hi there, just so I understand its a cat you are looking to rehome? Did the cat attack the dog? How is the cat with people ...is he aggressive with them too?
